possible to delete date but leave Win '98 on old drive?

I'm just curious, are you afraid someone in your family will try and resurrect the files after you've deleted them? Can't you just nuke the drive once it's time to let go of the computer for good? Just a thought...

Building v buying a NAS

I think I'd prefer the flexibility of building my own, so what NAS OS would you recommend over freeNAS? This sounds like a pretty good option actually, although I wasn't able to find it at that price (there was one xeon w/ 500gb drive for $310). I looked at the Lenovo website and the new ones...

Building v buying a NAS

Hi all, I've been toying around with the idea of lifting a few WD Reds from my current machine and putting them in a NAS of some sort. This would allow me to access the files from both laptops, iPads, and a android box for my tv and run plex on the NAS.. So my question is - is it better to buy...

I agree the cpu in itself isn't that much more expensive it's more the motherboard and ram that will make it a pricier option. I'd like to go for at least 16gb of ram, and that would push the price up on ddr4. So you think the 1230v3 is superior to the i5? I didn't think the xeon was...

Excel speed test comparison against an FX-8350

I know... It's old, but that's how often excel benchmarking seem to come up. Even Google the subject doesn't give you much. Just trying to figure out what cpu works best... Sorry drag an old corps out. Actually if someone with an e-1230 or 4690k ran the benchmark that would be awesome! Cheers

Saw another thread here on the topic of Excel speed that basically put the last nail in the coffin for fx-8530. http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2297052 I guess that leave me with skylake or not. Right now om not convinced the premium is worth it for me.

Wow, I'm glad I stumbled upon this old thread. Going to upgrade my CPU/MoBo combo after a Q9550 died on me and I use Excel quite heavily. I guess the FX-8350 is out of the question now, so i'm deciding between these: i5-4460 E3-1230 v3 (or E3-1231 if i can find on to a ok price in Hong...

The reason I brought up the RAM was because I realized I needed a upgrade to my old system, and when I looked at the cost it just wasn't worth the cost of adding more. Good info on the AM3 though. Maybe better to stay away then even though I've seen some good benchmark scores for the fx8350.

That's food for thought. I guess it really comes down to future proofing and how much to pay for that. Is that an accurate assessment? So the 1150 socket is on its way out, and with that DDR3? How long before the RAM will be hard to upgrade on a 1050 you think? Thanks again for the help!

Thanks for your answer. I'm assuming this would be a higher performing option that the xeon e-1230, but is the price to performance worth the jump to Skylake? I read that the new chipset is out, but don't know much about it. I'm assuming RAM would be quite a bit more expensive as well?

Which Macbook would be best in college for me?

Depending on what you'll use it for, but in college I don't think you can go wrong with the Air. I've had one for a year now and I love how light it is and the battery life. I'm sure you'll still have to haul a few books around so maybe nice with a lighter laptop.
