  1. The Intel Atom Thread

It's coming soon https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/search.html?_charset_=UTF-8&q=Gemini+Lake Honestly, Gemini Lake is excellent, with impressive single thread performance. A refresh is fine. The main problem is availability.
  2. Discussion Intel current and future Lakes & Rapids thread

The mini gaming rig market is a niche but it's a vibrant community and it's growing fast. Check out https://thor-zone.com/mini-itx/ , https://www.dan-cases.com/dana4.php , https://www.circlestudio.co/ and many more... Paired with decent graphics cards, low-power 10nm TGL chips will probably do...
  3. Discussion Intel current and future Lakes & Rapids thread

From what I understand, the Phantom Canyon NUC is still a work in progress, very fluid situation with multiple concepts / form factors floating around. The Ghost Canyon NUC is pretty much finalized and is the next big release (it's going to rock the SFF world).
  4. The Intel Atom Thread

Skyhawk Lake will have to wait because Gemini Lake Refresh is not canceled. Six new processors will launch in November : The 10W (desktop) Pentium J5040, Celeron J4125, Celeron J4025 and the 6W (mobile) Pentium N5030, Celeron N4120, Celeron N4020.
  5. The Intel Atom Thread

Any link to these roadmaps? Things are moving fast at Intel nowadays.
  6. The Intel Atom Thread

Elkhart Lake looks very promising (Gen11 Graphics). The first products are expected in Q1 2020...
  7. Mini PC from ali express

Do yourself a favor and buy trusted hardware from a trusted brand and a trusted seller. Especially if reliability matters. Many options from ASUS, ASRock, GIGABYTE, Shuttle and more are available.
  8. Fanless desktop options

Open-air really helps with large fanless CPU coolers indeed. Thermaltake's Core P series is a nice compromise.
  9. Fanless desktop options

A fanless desktop is actually easier than ever, thanks to Intel and AMD dropping 35W chips left and right :) On the Intel side, a 35W i3/i5, a Thin Mini-ITX and Akasa's Euler heat sink case, and you're good to go! On the AMD side, get the Athlon 200GE (or Ryzen 3 2200GE / Ryzen 5 2400GE if you...
  10. Discussion Intel current and future Lakes & Rapids thread

Ice Lake should be true to its name and bring TDP down. Hoping for 20W desktop chips. Pentium and i3 should not exceed 35W.
  11. The Intel Atom Thread

Thanks guys! Yes, most exciting release since the out-of-order Bay Trail 4 years ago. The "Atom" is doing better than ever. Intel is also giving tips to its partners regarding passive cooling, which is music to my ears :)
  12. Is Intel i7-6700T worth $50 more than i5-7400?

Too often, the 35W T-series gets no love, when it's silicon at its finest! Perfect for passive cooling too.
  13. The Intel Atom Thread

Sorry I meant Apollo Lake :D
  14. The Intel Atom Thread

Absolutely. Gemini Lake features Gen 9 graphics / Gen 10 display. Forgot about eMMC 5.1 support too.
  15. The Intel Atom Thread

Thanks mikk! Braswell was all about graphics, Gemini Lake is all about CPU performance. Internal slides mention similar 3D performance as Braswell (Intel is being very conservative, it's refreshing) but a 31% increase CPU-wise!
  16. Passive cooling or fanless

I couldn't have said better. Typically, go for a large internal CPU cooler like the Nofan CR-95C for 65W+ TDPs (and a mandatory mesh-laden case) or a heat sink case for less powerful processors.
  17. How to build a fanless PC (tutorial)

I'm appalled by AMD's non-existent response to the NUC and the recent stream of fanless mini PCs. It's just sad. The TNN-500 was incredible and started my fanless obsession. But clearly, a 22kg case is not very practical and not flexible too. There must be a way to optimise cooling (see...
  18. How to build a fanless PC (tutorial)

I do like HDPLEX and Streacom, but these are heatpipes-based cases. We are talking about the Euler and its simplicity here. There's only one fanless / unibody desktop case where the CPU is directly mounted on the aluminum fins (a la fanless NUC case) and it's the Euler ;)
  19. How to build a fanless PC (tutorial)

Passively-cooled PCs are not just about silence though. Solid state computing is mostly about extreme reliability. Moving parts are prone to failure, eliminating them improve failure rate, and ease maintenance tenfold. Fanless PCs are also the future, fans' days are numbered in mainstream PCs...
  20. How to build a fanless PC (tutorial)

You're absolutely right. A fanless gaming rig is pretty much impossible (although some options are being worked out right now). Apparently the Euler can't even cope with the latest 35W Skylake i7 either. It's still an amazing -and unique - idea, wish Akasa had some competition!
  21. How to build a fanless PC (tutorial)

Stumble upon this fanless build video https://youtu.be/xTpaB1FAU5s Who said fanless computing was hard to achieve? Love the simplicity. I wouldn't use a 54W CPU in the Euler though (only 35W chips are recommended by Akasa).
  22. Fanless desktop options

The CR-80EH is from the same company but a whole different design, and not a great one. I wouldn't use it for anything more than 35W TDP ;)
  23. Fanless desktop options

For a low-power PC though, many fanless barebones are available now. Check Shuttle DS437T / DS57U / XS35V5, Zotac C Series, Compulab Fitlet etc...
  24. Fanless desktop options

Those temperatures are real, do not underestimate the power of the CR-95C ;) I wouldn't recommend this particular rig since such a large cooler in such a small case can be tricky to install. But the CR-95C in a larger case with some mesh on top for convection will cool most CPUs under 95W...
  25. Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

Thanks for your support ShintaiDK, it's actually 51W for i3s only (with 65W thermal solution recommended!). It looks like Skylake Pentiums are 51W and 54W TDP now. Yep, it's a little messy :/
  26. The Intel Atom Thread

Giada keeps announcing fanless mini desktops, but they are nowhere to be found...
  27. ITX CPU cooling (and case)

We're progressing :D 65W is doable but I'm not sure this is the way to go. You want power and I think you should go for it. Just beware of the "cute factor". Unless you're living in one of these awfully adorable tiny house, go for the 6700K and the appropriate sized cooler and case. You will not...
  28. ITX CPU cooling (and case)

Top-of-the-line CPU and heavy workload don't go well with small case and small cooler. Compromises should be made ;) If thermal management matters to you, at least go for a large C-type cooler from Noctua / Phanteks / Be Quiet.
  29. Will mini-PCs take over desktop computing?

    Now we're talking :)
  30. Will mini-PCs take over desktop computing?

After the "tablet bubble" people are definitely back to desktop PCs. The "post-PC" world is really the "post-beige tower" world. I don't consider compute sticks to be PCs though. They are thin clients, or cloud devices to me. PC is freedom and flexibility when it comes to the OS, RAM, or storage.
  31. How to determine which CPU on Intel ARK is fanless?

You're welcome ^^ To stay on topic, fanless PCs are not about silence only. It's about reliability too. A no moving parts PC is also less prone to failure ;)
  32. How to determine which CPU on Intel ARK is fanless?

When fanlesss is done the right way there's no throttling though. Passive cooling shouldn't equal high temperatures.
  33. How to determine which CPU on Intel ARK is fanless?

So nice, thanks for the support guys! :)
