Gaming rig with new GPU - 600-1k, the game itself $60, monthly fees, another $120/year... Instead, you could build a budget machine for $500 and sign up for the game...

    I've tried out Kodi, open elec, Emby, and Plex - I have to say, the most recent versions of Plex make it the clear winner. With my current setup, Plex grabs all the metadata (but not always subtitles) perfectly and the UI is very pleasing. Did you know, a raspberry pi with RaspPlex is like a FireTV?

    A lot of people use Debian as their daily driver, so that might actually be something worth looking into. I sometimes hear of people installing the Gnome desktop environment on top of a Ubuntu install, which would be a solid choice too because you're getting the best of both worlds.

    Wired unless you don't really do a lot of downloading. Wifi these days can meet the demands of streaming, even in higher resolutions. Just be careful not to have your microwave directly between the router and the device :)
