I also have some hope for more retro boards.
I remember my fondest memories of PC gaming with Matrox MGA & 3dfx Voodoo2.
Wish I could keep all my old builds. Retro gaming with raspi isn't the same!
But I'm still getting a 6900XT to replace my current GTX1080.
I have a little experience in electronics manufacturing process (20yrs), and I'm confused by the recent developments of chip makers rereleasing old fabs and board makers rereleasing them.
What's the biggest problem they're facing today? Logistics.
That's what they've been saying.
They never...
Mainboard is a unicorn Asrock itx with X570 & TB3.
TB3 works with windows.
Been that way for a while..
My old razer blade stealth notebook has one and I've been using that setup with egpu+gtx1080 and EC-NVME+samsung 970p and T5 drives for steam for years. No issues.
The same setup also works...
I bought an Orico TB3 NVME enclosure that claims to get up to 40Gbps to try. Can't hurt. Yes, SFF compromises.
At this point, I'm at the mercy of a much slower drive, or, micro stuttering. Both making my new machine feel like a
Congrats!
That's a powerful rig you got there.. you should get the G9.
Have you considered the LG 49WL95C-W?
As for which is better between 1440p144/240 vs 2160p120, only you can answer that question (please do share with us your discoveries)
I think it also depends on the games. Personally, I...
Thanks for the feedbacks
I'm leaning to go with a single drive, after some rough calculations.
I've a 1TB 970 Evo Plus, but even with that, the added cost from the mobo offset things quite far - personally, I'd rather spend the $ on storage, not on mobo
Cost V Performance ratio has changed...
*Title says it all
Tried googling some numbers but didn't really find anything solid.
It's almost like everyone just forgot about RAID.
With today's state of HW/SW/OS RAID, how are the following compared?
1. 2TB high-end NVME VS 2x1TB (RAID0) budget NVME --- cost about the same, if not less
2...
I'm probably as old as your dad, although my old setup is a bit more updated.
$1000-1500 for a modest build. Which would probably perform better (and last a lot longer) than upgrading just the GPU to say, $1000 RTX card.
I'm also in the same boat; want to build a new PC for FS2020 (and other...
@MadScientist : Thanks for reporting. Appreciate the data. Doom Eternal (DE) is difficult, even for us FPS old-timers. I find myself playing Quake Champions more than DE, despite the eye candies of DE.
From what you described, it seems like you're not hitting thermal barrier there. It's more...
That doesn't sound good.
Are you thinking of switching to another brand/model?
What's your GPU?
Have you had a chance to try some games?
I really want to do my build soon for MS FS 2020 & Cyberpunk.
FS 2020 is supposed to be very CPU heavy (can actually use n cores)
@MadScientist There's always someone older out there ;-)
Thanks for the feedback.
2500K O/C-ed was the value king back then, probably as good as old Cely 300A.
I also got the itch, actually months ago I posted here (but I couldn't find it) - so when I saw your post, I chimed in because it has...
I had a similar build (4.6 Ghz Intel i5-2500K ) - I want to do one last build before I'm 404 and I'm also looking/waiting for 3600/X
So, how much better is your new build compared to the old one?
Help me jump on the 3600 OC bandwagon ;-)
I also bought a Nokia smartphone for GPS reason.
It sat inside my cabinet for years before I decided to give it away.
Nokia map was the best then (iPhone was only at 2? And Samsung/LG offerings were just plastic crap full of bloats)
Wow ... I haven't heard anyone mention Visual Foxpro &...
Windows phone ....
Is it the 40+MPixel Nokia?
True story: Years ago when chain restaurants started using apps, also when I was still working, my coworkers and I decided to try the then new Subway app. All of us got the orders correct, but one of the coworker. He had a Windows Phone. And...
They're slowly fixing/improving many bugs/annoyances, albeit also adding new ones.
At least, the new MSFT is actually listening and responding, unlike Balmer era where they were so (wrongly) proud and arrogant (ME, Vista, etc LOL).
Evident in VS Code, and the new Edge. They're keeping up with...
Definitely.
Tried Quake Champions this morning and it was good fun.
I miss all the fun from gaming ..
Might even buy a used 1080 now, but I'm gonna make sure it'd fit into a small enclosure - future proofing :)
Hello,
* Title says it all :)
Please bring me up to speed on today's decent value build.
- Purpose
Fun.
For the memories.
My last build?
- History
I started back in the days when Gates was the richest most hated man, and Jobs was still poor.
I built some customs for customers during...
I haven't jumped on 4k yet, my last purchase was an LG 55" 9500. I think the latest LG products are as bad as Samsung, so Sony or even Leeco sounds like a good alternative now.
If you feel an itch, you should scratch it :P
I've managed to hold off scratching my itch for a while now.
Very tempted to jump on the Skylake and ITX, but I should hold it a bit longer.
I want to see what Zen is and what it'll do to Intel.
I'm also thinking about retiring from this field...
Ran this just now - man, this was very fast back in 2012

Thanks in...
Nope. Everyone's busy as it is.
Besides, last time they pushed a domain logon script to install new printers, they end up deleting all printers of my machine. :(
You should definitely check out ninite.com - tried it just now, it works great!
I think AutoIT is promising because it runs on some...
Octopuss: Your tips are much appreciated. I could deploy most of them to achieve 90% of what I want to do.
As for 3rd party scripts/apps, any recommendations?
I think I'm going with ninite to help automate installing/updating apps on these machines (use it with task scheduler).
I've also looked...
Target: 10 Win7 Pro machines, freshly imaged.
Requirement:
Need to set up one local user with specific settings/styles:
- themes: solid black background, black color theme, transparency disabled, no sounds, blank screensaver 60min
- power: high performance, sleep/hibernation disabled

IME, so far it has boosted catalog imports and reads and improved 1:1 preview generation.
I'm also thinking to create separate catalogs to every job, just to limit the size of each catalog.
CPU is only a 2500K clocked @4.5GHz. RAM is 16GB.
I know I could benefit from going with an i7 (HT)...
Funny.
Drives are 2x 240GB Sandisk Pro.
Doubled every mark, going from 1 to 2 drives.
Just wondering if I'd get same spees gain if I add 1 or 2 more into the RAID0
Gents: Need your opinion on this result.
From your experience, will I get 1:1 benefit if I add 1 or 2 more 240GB drives into the RAID?
If not, I'm thinking I should just double my RAM instead.
My need is to make Lightroom able to generate 100% preview as fast as possible.
Thanks...
I had the pleasure of buying that POS TJ08-E. And then returning it.
Stay away from it.
Low quality; Flimsy steel panels, lame plastics, ugly build quality. Just a few on top of my head that I can remember.
Probably an upgrade if you're coming from Antec or other generic chinese case.
Since...
Coup27: just put an SSD flat on a table, see if you can connect sata and power cables to it. You wouldn't be able to, because the head the cables are thicker than the space between SSD and table.
All optical, HDD and SSD drive always get mounted with their back hanging out for this reason.
Lian Li did a bad design job with this case.
I could accept that:
- the side panels are secured by 8 tiny screws on each side
- one of the side panel double duty as the mobo tray
- the top 140mm fan is not centered to the case
- installing optical drive require removal of 140mm fan
- no vent...
