    A gem from Newegg reviews

i remember working at a pc store back in the day of AMD thunderbirds when idiots would come in and ask why their cpu didnt work anymore after they 'tested' it before installing into their case by powering it up with no heatsink. thinking it was a defective cpu since it started smoking basically...

The real reason there is so much hunger for Ryzen

The real problem with Bulldozer was that although you could get an "8-core" chip, it practice it was only a 4-core chip due to only having 4 floating point units, with 8 integer units so it was about as accurate to call Bulldozer an 8 core as it is to call an i7 an 8-core chip because of hyper...

Kaby Lake - Netflix 4K support is here!

this should be an example of how to encourage piracy. Artifical marketing gimmicks and greed. Go buy a brand new cpu to watch in 4k!! no thanks, my 6700k is perfectly capable of playing back DRM-free files. The best way to reduce piracy is to make it not worth the effort. What netflix and intel...

2500K upgrade to i7-6700K worth it? (same old question)

I recently did this same upgrade myself, although from a 2500 non-K to a 6700K and it was a pretty big improvement in raw performance(i got a 700mhz speed increase in addition to the 20-30% IPC improvment.). Also having a modernized platform with USB 3.1 and type-C, plus an M.2 slot and NVMe...

EVGA 1080 SC after BIOS update...

that issue is related to memory clocks, which i'm having no problems with. I'm having problems with core clocks and gpu boost.

EVGA 1080 SC after BIOS update...

I have a post on the evga forums about the issue as of yesterday. so far no official replies, though some helpful users have let me know of a way to restore the original bios. After i get my waterblock tomorrow i'll try reverting the BIOS to the original version, hopefully that restores gpu boost.

EVGA 1080 SC after BIOS update...

did try overclocking it some, nothing crazy, just to see if it would work(50mhz core, and 50mhz memory) but the clocks still stay the same. locked at 1709 / 5005.

EVGA 1080 SC after BIOS update...

I've installed the BIOS update that is supposed to help protect my VRM's and ever since that update, now my fans run at 2200rpm(on average) whenever i'm in games... It sounds like a jet fighter trying to take off. The noise of this card is annoying now, but thats the least of my problems. Yes...

Would you still get a FTW?

If i could go back in time, I'd have gone with a different brand. very unhappy with my now very noisy 1080, that no longer uses gpu boost at all, but hey, the temps are lower.

EVGA GTX 1070/1080 GPUs Catching Fire Due To VRMs Overheating

I think my main concern at this point is the boosting not working anymore. After everything is properly watercooled and the vrm issue is no longer a risk, i want my card to boost again normally. I'm hoping this BIOS update doesn't make that impossible. I'd honestly have gone with an MSI, which i...

EVGA GTX 1070/1080 GPUs Catching Fire Due To VRMs Overheating

I'm quite disappointed in this issue myself. I have an evga 1080 sc acx 3.0. I installed the bios update and it definitely lowered temps of the gpu core(max temps are usually below 70C, before they'd rise to 75-80C,) no idea about the vrm's as i don't have a thermal camera to check. The problem...

Would you consider the GTX1060 3GB worthy if it was 25€ cheaper?

I wouldn't consider a 3gb card currently especially at a price difference of only 25. Just save up another month or two and get the 6gb version. Alternatively, look at an AMD RX480.

    Nvidia 1080 paper launch..microcenter can go<redacted> themselves

Time to eat crow. Its a paper launch. Availability is horrendous and has driven prices of the founders edition cards well over $1000. GG nVidia, the prices of this card are ~double what you said they would be.

[Hardocp]GeForce GTX 1080: Most Bizarre Secret Paper Launch Ever

that's where I would think you're wrong. Reviews have nothing to do with a product being considered "released". Release date is when retailers are told by the manufacturer that they can begin selling the item. Reviews could happen before, at the same time, or after(or even not at all). I do...

[Hardocp]GeForce GTX 1080: Most Bizarre Secret Paper Launch Ever

this is NOT a paper launch(at least not yet). I don't get why people get so upset about this. They announced a product, announced a release date, and provided reviews prior to the release date. A paper launch would be may 27th rolling around and then no cards are actually available and there's...

Intel 6th Gen i5 6500 good enough for gaming?

That only happens on old cpu's with really old thermal paste that's basically turned into glue over years of heat cycling. with a fresh cpu and fresh paste there's no chance of that happening. Not to mention the way modern intel cpu's are designed and retained, its impossible to happen now days...

    Upgrading from i5 2500k

I upgraded from a 2500 to a 6700k, mainly because my sata3 ports had died on my old motherboard. my 2500 was running at 3.8ghz turbo, and the 6700k is currently at 4.5ghz. There is definitely a noticable difference, mostly in minimum framerates, though average/max didnt change a ton. The biggest...

[TechPowerUp] No Takers for VR: TechPowerUp New GPU Survey

I'll give you a hint... how many hardware addon's have ever been successful for a console in gaming history? Segacd, 32x, the memory expansion for N64, ps eye, kinect, ps move... i mean really, nothing has ever succeeded in a way that i'd call mass market or mainstream. PSVR will likely be no...

How Many Years Do You Expect To Use a Card(s) in Your Main Rig?

i remember my first 3d video card was an intel i740. After that it gets a little foggy, but i Know i had an 8800GT at one point, possibly that was the next card I really don't remember. After that I bought a GTX 285, GTX 670, 970, and will maybe buy a 1080, or wait for a 1080 ti. All depends on...

Anybody else unimpressed with new midrange Nvidia GPUs, and much higher MSRP?

I'm just concerned about the pricing. If the reference/founders edition cards are going for $699, why would any vender stick to the $599 price point for their custom models which will be faster/quieter/cooler than a reference card? Generally the 'better' product ends up with a higher price tag...

    General VR discussion thread

I'm definitely not buying any VR system until i've tried one, and i'm not aware of anywhere that has demo units near me. Also i'd like to wait and see if this actually develops into an accepted, usable technology and doesn't just disappear a couple years later like 3D monitors/tv's have. The...

I recently built a skylake i5 6600k system for a friend, did some mild overclocking for him and its running great @ 4.5ghz 1.2 volts. I was also able to have it boot and start benchmarks at up to 4.9ghz at 1.25 volts but it crashed halfway through. 4.8 they completed without issue. I backed it...

any options that would include USB 3.1? forgot to mention that. Not needed, but would be nice to have as a future-proofing option. Also isn't ASRock the entry level / low end Asus brand? Would I be better off looking at an actual asus board like the asus z170-A?

    probably a stupid question(firewall related)

Between an asus NT66U, and a Sonicwall firewall, what differences are there security wise? The asus obviously wins on cost, and does have several features that a sonicwall doesn't, wireless mainly, but thats easy enough to add with an access point. As far as the firewall, they both have a...

    AMD Announces their GameWorks Equivalent

    Future Proofing

I'd say it all depends on your budget. If you have no need for the cash from selling all the 290x, throw em in the kids computers and sell the 280's. If you're strapped for cash, sell the 290's now for more money(probably not much more though) and upgrade it down the line when they get a game...

With HBM and 14/16nm shrinking GPU area, will we see m.2 GPUs?

any GPU that could fit in the space and thermal constraints of an m.2 slot would likely be similar enough in performance to the CPU's IGP that it would be pointless, especially if we're talking about an AMD APU. There's just no reason to waste the space on an M.2 slot and additional cooling...
