    RIP Russ, NCNE (Moderator Approved)

Wow - I haven't been on the Off Topic forum for years. Anyway I was sadden to see that Russ has passed. I remember Russ from the old Compucheap site he had back in the lat 90's or early 2000. I also remember him from Anand's first forum when he was around 15 years old. The forum was a single...

Those running 7 or 8: do you have updates turned off?

The new Win 10 cumulative update model now leaves me a bit apprehensive.I don't trust MS ever since they decided to roll out updates without the ability to select each update for us 7 and 8 users. So who here has updates disabled? I used to get my updates via Autopatcher, but that is now almost...

Sneaks Windows 10 advertising into an Internet Explorer security patch. Man these guys are pushy bastards on shoving 10 down everyone's throats. http://betanews.com/2016/03/09/windows-10-advertising-in-ie-security-patch/#comments

    Best Browse?

I just tried Pale Moon yesterday on my laptop - the x64 version. Seemed to work great, except when I click on my mouse button to go back a page, it does not work. The function works fine in FF and Chrome, so not sure what the issue is. I also had an issue with it displaying the Ublock Origin...

How many of you are OS holdouts / luddites? Still clinging to your favorite OS?

Back to the original topic, yes I'm a hold out for 7 and 8.1. I do have 10 on a spare laptop, but I just can't seem to accept it. There is also a possibility that it will become a subscription service which I don't want. Once 7 expires, I'll either keep using it, move to 8.1, or go with Linux. I...

Need an industrial-strength fix for Windows (7-64-SP1) Update

I get all my updates using Autopatcher. It installs only the critical updates, and gives you options for the others. I have turned off updates completely for windows 7, as I don't like what MS has done with their updates (i.e. inadequate descriptions).

    Win 7 Updates Crippled?

I have no problems getting only security updates using Autopatcher for both 7 and 8.1. I just finished installing 8.1 fresh on a laptop. Downloaded and installed Autopatcher. After downloading all the updates, there were ~100 or so security updates for 8.1. In less than one hour, it was all...

Microsoft intentionally sabotaging Windows 7, by making Windows Update unbearable??

For updates, I only use Autopatcher. It will store updates locally on your drive. If I need to update someone's pc, I simply copy my folder to theirs and run the Autopatcher executable. I have updates disabled, and do it myself once a month. Another reason I like Autopacher is it will install...

    Got 30 mins to kill?

Most of this stuff we already know about, but what I found interesting in the video is the way the new Edge browser bypasses the host file after placing a block. Some of the things I don't like are the constant reissuing of KB's that you have already don't want or disabled. They just...

I wanted to double check what I had installed, so I created an Excel sheet with all the KB's installed in my system. I had the output go out to a text file in your user profile with this command: wmic qfe list brief /format:texttablewsys > "%USERPROFILE%\hotfix.txt" The only problem is the...

Is Win10 designed to collect lots of meta-data?

I just installed Linux Mint 17.3 along with win 7. For my printer on my win 7 machine, it was able to find my windows network and see and install the driver, so yes Linux has come a long way.

    [TR] Win10 now a "recommended" update for Win7, 8.1.

I don't get it either. 10 has been out for over 6 months now, and those that wanted would have upgraded already. The ones that did not, either they did not like it or it broke something. I'm sure those that have updates enabled for everything, they will be in for a surprise after a reboot. It...

Eagles guitarist Glenn Frey dies at 67

LOL you read my mind. I'll be turning 61 in May of this year. Man time flies when you reach 30 and beyond. When you hit the 50's, then you start to think how long do I have before I kick the bucket.

Microsoft: New CPUs will require Windows 10

You could still install Win7 or 8.1 on new silicon, BUT MS is not going to guarantee that it performs as well as it would under Win10 because Win10 will support new features in these CPUs. MS is not going to release patches to try to make older OSes utilize these new features. (from...

    Common Sense

Today, we grieve for our beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: - Life isn't always...

Massive Windows 10 News Hides 5 Nasty Surprises

Nice list. Thanks for sharing. I just wish MS would come clean and report exactly what they are tracking. I can see telemetry being acceptable for things as: How are customers really engaging with the app? Do people use the features you thought they wanted? Where are they spending (or not...

Anyone else REFUSE to get Windows 10 upgrade?

My guess is the only way you are going to get a "win 10 slim" will be a hacked version, where all the garbage has been removed, and you are left with a clean OS. It will be interesting to see if this happens. Face it, it's only a matter of time, considering that some have already come out with...

Anyone else REFUSE to get Windows 10 upgrade?

Staying with win7 until it expires, then I'll move to 8.1 and stay with 8.1. I may decide to finally go with 10 for just gaming, and then my main boot will probably be Linux Mint or Linux Zorin.

    Reinstalling OS

I had the same issue with my win7 x64 box. I turned out to be my SSD. I had to contact the mfg to get a erase program. Ran that which took only 10 seconds, then loaded an Acronis image I made about a month earlier, and all is well again. So it could be your SSD.
