More IP's vs. Cable/Dsl router

In any cablemodem service, they will only give you X bandwidth per cablemodem. No way around that, so extra IP's buy you extra computers. Not extra bandwidth. :(

2 machines share a cable modem?

Save yourself some money and time first. Ask your cable company how many PC's you can connect to the modem. Most will allow at least 4. Mine allowed 8! You would just need a hub to do it then and they are about $28 these days.

dsl connection sharing problem

did you set a default gateway? And I believe that you have to set the IP address of the system with 2 NIC's as the IP address of your DNS server in the other computer. Hope that helps!

Will a hub work just as good as a switch for my home lan?

After 13 years of LAN experience, you will not see a difference. But, do yourself a big favor and make it a dual speed hub. (10/100) Even in large file transfers, you won't see a difference. Save the money, by the time you need to go further, there will be something newer and cheaper for you.

MCSE Certification question....

Question about ping times and trace routes.

You guys are both right. That is why traceroute does usually give close to accurate times. Becasue the router along the way are simply rejecting the packet because of it's TTL flag, not actually responding to the PING. Routers see ICMP echo requests, pings, as the lowest priority of traffic...

Which company is better among these...D-link, Linksys, Netgear...

Go for the cheapest NIC that your system will take. 3COM cost more but almost always work properly. D-Link cards have more compatibility issues, but are like $9 for 10/100 and you won't see any difference. As for switch vendors, NetGear rocks. My $.02
