6-Core Gulftown vs. Upcoming Sandy Bridge

i7 now... I don't think anyone expects the graphics on SB to be competitive with discrete graphics cards, and that is what he'd want for running Premier Pro properly.

    Future of graphics business

I think we are in violent agreement...:) Until AMD had developed their own chipset division to it's present level, Nvidia was the obvious choice. However, Intel has always been fairly poor at IGP, so Nvidia was also the choice for on-board Intel graphics chipsets as well... Nvidia sold far...

    Future of graphics business

A few things... 1. JHH can insist on all he wants, but he is a very minority shareholder in Nvidia (less than 1%) so the point is moot. 2. No merger is possible (friendly or otherwise) due to anti-trust laws 3. Since the corporate bylaws are written by the board and not the CEO, I doubt there...

    Future of graphics business

Intel currently owns 50% markestshare of graphics while AMD and Nvidia each hover near the 25% level. It is illegal for the governement to allow the formation of a clear monopoly through a merger...

    Future of graphics business

As I've stated previously, it's not legally possible for Intel to buy Nvidia. Neither the SEC nor the DOJ would allow the merger to take place...

    Future of graphics business

Which is another way to say it's guesswork...:) I am dubious about chipsets being only 10% of their profits. While I know that the R&D is expensive, IGP represents the VAST majority of graphics in computers today.

    Future of graphics business

Actually, they didn't expect AMD to survive the merger (JHH said as much) which means that fusion wasn't nearly as imminent as. But that point is moot...the only real death knell for them vis a vis chipsets was the Intel (80% of the market) lawsuit in Feb last year. I suspect that this was when...

    Future of graphics business

#2 I see that it was discussed, but the SEC reports they are listing as their source (10-Q and 10-k) do not actually have those breakouts in them at all...I've gone through the last 5 years worth. #3 I agree that anything is possible...

    Future of graphics business

some issues... 1. "many decades ago" is obviously silly, since the company is less than 2 decades old 2. Where did you get the "profitability related to this business is barely 10% of profits" from? 3. There's a reason that Lasso never developed... I agree that Nvidia's chipset days are...

Im looking for a good graphics card that will last a while.

A video card doesn't help with rendering, the cpu does that. What a good graphics workstation uses a Quadro/Fire card for is to preview the render. Normal cards can't do that very well... However, while a good graphics card can make an enourmous difference in your workflow, it really sucks for...

    Rendering video card

I would disagree with a caveat...in video editing when you render transitions, or in areas where you need to see what you are going to render, a Quadro or Fire card is VERY helpful (almost necessary). These cards let you do a low res render-on-the-fly which means your work is much more...

    Final Word on Larrabee

AMD's revenue in graphics for Q4 09 was ~35% of their total revenue for the year in graphics ($427 Million in Q4, $1.206 Billion FY). Their Operating Gain in Q4 for graphics was $68 million. I don't think Nvidia breaks out those numbers (or I just couldn't find them...).

Fortunately for me, I live in Australia where they are converting everyone to FTTP! ;) God Bless the NBN!!!

    Final Word on Larrabee

Sounds a lot closer...while Larrabee will never be a graphics part, it can still be a nice rendering engine part. That's a lot less complex for the programers, and the large number of cores would suit it very nicely.

Im looking for a good graphics card that will last a while.

+1 I tend to use Quadro for 3D and video editing as they have fewer compatability issues with some of the software. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=1&name=NVIDIA

    Final Word on Larrabee

G'day mate! (started a new company and I've been flat-out) I think Sandorski picked it... While it's quite possible that there was also some marketing or strategic pressure intended, I think that Intel just has this huge blind spot when it comes to high-end graphics...

    Final Word on Larrabee

It doesn't really matter what their intentions are... The goal of the SEC is to prevent unfairness in the market (i.e. avoiding monopolies.) To do this they tend to be very conservative when granting permissions for M&A (Mergers and Acquisitions). Also, remember that Intel is still under...

  23. V

    Final Word on Larrabee

I don't think so...remember that Larrabee was a lot of cores designed to use software for all of the graphic functions instead of hardware. The problem wasn't that the hardware didn't funtion properly, but that using software 100% (or even close) proved to be a futile experiment. When asked...

    Final Word on Larrabee

2 problems with that theory... 1. Nvidia would cost far more than it's worth 2. The current market share for graphics (+/-5%) is Nvidia=25%, ATI (AMD)=25%, Intel=50%...yup, those onboard graphics sure do sell ALOT. I don't think the SEC would allow the sale to Intel. BTW, you should read...

    Final Word on Larrabee

At a group panel discussion with the Intel Fellows, essentially some of the smartest people at Intel, Intel's head graphics honcho was quizzed about Larrabee. When asked if they ever expected to see a Larrabee-based graphics part coming out at all, the entire panel looked directly at Piazza...

LOL...I like that. Sadly, nobody will accept that if my predictions are wrong. I don't see any issues occuring unless there's a wild swing (which I don't expect). I think both the Republicans and Democrats will be equally ineffectual...:) Edit:BTW, by the election screwing with the numbers...

Economic Growth Rate Downgraded to Anemic 1.6 Percent in Second Quarter

Actually, I can't think of a single recovery that didn't have a pullback. It's usually the very best time to invest (which I am doing right now, big time). I will predict that we will have some very nice numbers in January...though the election may screw with that a bit.

Economic Growth Rate Downgraded to Anemic 1.6 Percent in Second Quarter

Nope...as a professional investor, I can tell you that economic trends tend to be cyclical. The smartest investors will judge a quarter based on the same quarter from last year or the year before. QonQ can be interesting, but is usually less informative.
