Both tend to squeeze out from under the heatsink and onto your processor. With the conductive stuff, the cpu is toast if the bridges get 'shorted'. With the non-conductive stuff, it's just messy -- but no real damage.
Apparently, according to the manufacturer, AS3 isn't really conductive...
Umm.... $39 for a fan?
That's a little high... you may want to try some other fans: Antec, Panaflo, Panasonic etc. Of course that all depends on what's available to you where you live.
Have not heard of Foxconn. Couldn't find anything using the half-hearted search of foxconn.com.
sorry <shrug>
excellent post -- have to install these on my bro's pc -- maybe he'll stop downloading some of the virus (or rather they will still get downloaded -- they'll just be killed every time)
That's been my reaction as well -- so your analysis is that Arctic Silver(insert number here), Alumina(or whatever) are not necessary -- plain old silicon goop will do?
Anybody else have a financial reason why NOT to use generic stuff versus paying the extra for AS?
I went to a well-known Atlanta retailer and was speaking to one of the sales guys about thermal compunds. The choices were Arctic Silver II ($14/syringe), some white compound [no-name] ($11/syringe) and some other no-name white compound ($1/sac). Now I don't know about you, but I don't go...
<< Newegg just dropped the price by about $4.
/edit - looks like you have to go in through that link on pricewatch. >>
If y'all think I am technically thread crapping, <sorry> :( but wasn't the price earlier this week $41 (free shipping)?
Now it's 34 + 6.95 = $40.95
Still not shabby -- I...
<< Yes, Directron is a good place. Myself got one case there time ago. Very organized and expedient.
If you don't like newegg check nutrend.com, surprise, surprise. >>
Deja vu!
<< When using price watch. You have to click on the link that says BUYONLINE under their name. This will take you to their pricewatch price. If you just go to TCWO you will get a different price >>
FWIW:
Unless it says "Phone Order Only". You'd have to call the company then -- I know TCWO...
You might also want to consider your power supply fan. I swapped out all the case fans in one of mine to Panaflo's L1As(They do not have RPM monitoring) and still there was a loud whirr. When I turned all the case fans off (except for the heatsink fan -- which I swapped out to eliminate this...
I think the easiest one to use is a drill with a cutting bit -- not sure if they come in a 120mm size, but there's not a whole lot else that's as easy to use. Dremels are nice -- and after using both, i still prefer the drill for circular holes in metal sheets. Definitle might want to get...
<< In the wake of Yahoo! charging $19.99 for pop access, this seems like a much better deal to me. Lycos mail is now offering what they called Lycos Mail Plus. 25mb of disk storage space, with free pop access, and no ads, for $19.95/yr. Just seems like a much better deal than the Yahoo! deal...
I just had a Duron 600 fry on me. The MSI board's Diagnostic LED says it's the CPU (4 red LEDs), and although all the fans turn on, there is definitely no posting. I don't remember any of systems ever having this many problems -- all began when I read and beleived the AT article about how...
<< Aren't the rounded cables more prone to data corruption, especially the non-standard 24" ones? >>
I have heard/read that the cables longer than 18" are susceptible to corruption but have not seen this personally -- not that I would have noticed it anyways. I have not heard a reasonable...
I've found some of the household cleaning foams most useful (rubbing alcohol is also great) -- just be a little careful which ones you use (toxicity, plastic meltability). This coupled with an old, clean toothbrush (preferred for scrubbing ability over q-tip) and a little too much time on one's...
<< Is it really humid where you live? If not then a window mounted "swamp" cooler might be a way to go. They use the phase change of water to cool. Check with your local hardware store. They could probably also let you know if your area is too humid or not to run one. >>
I KNOW I've seen...
Obviously I put on too much. It eventually (several months) spread out from under the heatsink and is now splattered over parts of the L Bridges. How do I know this... my pc stopped working and so I took everything apart and I don't know if this is the issue or not. I don't have another CPU or...
<< Go down to your local hard ware store and get some painter's touch brand spray paint. It should be about 3$ for a can of it. good stuff :) >>
You can also try your local auto parts shop (NAPA, PepBoys etc). They specialize in paints for metal surfaces. Don't forget to sand your case...
<AMD claim that heating and cooling of the die forces thin compounds like ASII out to the edges resulting in a loss of cooling properties near the centre of the core, Hence they recommend using a Pink pad of death instead - now as we all know, the PPOD has the heat transfer properties of an old...
I haven't played with the Vantecs but I have about a half-dozen panaflows between my computer and my roommates computer and the only problem we have had is the PS -- that's the loudest whirring I have!
No cooling/noise problems so far -- neither one is oc'd very much so ...
I do beleive that...
Are you sure it's a wattage issue and not a power supply issue?
In any event, you should be fine with a 400W power supply. (Although I think you should be able to get away with the 300Watt one you have)
Just my 2 cents
<< NICE!!! That's a good way to get the economy goin'. Too bad I live in NC.
Of course, this could be a paperwork nightmare for businesses. >>
Somebody please correct me if I am wrong but you can buy stuff via mail / internet and still qualify for the non-sales tax -- of course...
I had mine die a few days outside of retailer warranty period! I don't think the rpm monitor is an issue with this board (unlike say the ABIT KT7A). I too bought the board based on the rave review anandtech had given it but I think it may be toast -- fyi, even if you do get it to somehow...
I checked that manual and it is essentially the same as the pro-2a manual as far as the pinouts are concerned.
Thanks for the info tho, hardass.
Let me provide a few more details about the board -- it may help in determining the motherboards actual manual/settings.
The board seems to be some...
I have a MicroStar MS-6330 VER:2.1 Board and did not receive a manual with the board. The board is slightly different from the MSI KT133 Pro-2A that I have and is also different from all the ones displayed on the MSI website (www.msi.com.tw) .Does any one have this board? can you tell me where...
I have used a dremel and a box-cutter/craft knife (pick either tool up at your nearby hardware store). I prefer the knife even though it literally requires a heckova lot more elbow grease. The advantage being that I can cut along a edge (ruler/thick cardboard cutout) and so the shapes come out...
starting linux as "Linux single" didn't stop it from hanging again at the same module on the INIT sequence
and for some reason using a boot disk gives me a Kernel panic: <something about not being able to mount as root>
I have onboard sound on my MSI motherboard. I think its the VIA AC97 Audio. I tried installing the sound drivers using sndconfig and it stalled the computer. So I rebooted and the computer hangs when it tries to load the sound module. I tried pressing 'I' to get into the interactive boot/OS...
<< okay i have one more thing to say here...you have to have EXCELLENT credit...to get nextel. one late payment on anything and you're out of luck. >>
Umm... yes. but they do have a deposit system ($500!!!) if you're not squeaky clean. I have Nextel service in Atlanta and except for when my...
I just want to thank all the folks out there who helped me out of this little problem (cirrus1, marat, FUBAR).
I disabled the hardware APM (except for blanking the monitor) and FUBAR's directions regarding the apmd modules were awesome!
Thanks again all!:D
Well I opened linuxconf but there are no apmd daemons in there -- at least not where I could see -- I clicked thruough a whole bunch of stuff and nothing! Any ideas if this is due in some way to the BIOS shutting the Harddrive down (after 20minutes of idle) or something? Silly Question: Is...
I just installed 7.1 last week. I leave the PC alone for a little while and it goes into sleep mode (screensaver in X-windows or blank screen in command line). That's as it should be. But when I resume operation, everything is SUPER slow! I can't even run any program (whether in X-windows or...
Thanks guys for all the responses. I did however try the following:
1) Remove CPU and HSF. Scrape the thermal pad off. Add Arctic Silver compound and reseat CPU and HSF. - No dice!
2) Reseat all fans, power/interface connectors, and cards. - No dice!
3) Replace Video card - no picture...
Dude -- I had the similar problem. See my "sudden death" post. Essentially a CMOS clear "seems" to have fixed the problem -- for now. If it happens again, it's getting RMA-ed. :frown:
<< My computer has worked fine for a year, but I tried to run an old NES emulator I had and a long BEEP...
