I may be wrong: PPT - Package Power Tracking, how close to VRM limit the CPU package power draw is, 100% (maximum) should throttle. TDC - Thermal Design Current, maximum current available in a load condition based on the thermal situation (sustained / avg VRM capacity when hot, 100% is maximum)...

Lenovo released a Cannon Lake laptop

If I already gave links with the score ranges, and scores are all over the place, why pick two results? The 8121u there has much higher memory bandwidth.

Lenovo released a Cannon Lake laptop

    A better comparison is the i3 8130u, an 8th Gen KBL-U product. (2.2 / 3.4, 15w) In CB15, it scores 140/338 in an Acer Aspire 3: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Aspire-3-A315-51-I3-8130U-SSD-FHD-Laptop-Review.302252.0.html If the 8121u scores 139/306, IPC might be up somewhat (139 @ up to...

    Apple A12 benchmarks

If AMD gets anything close to GloFo's stated 55% reduction in power and improves their architecture somewhat at 7nm, they will be closer. A Zen 2 SoC could provide around the same performance at "7.5w" package TDP as the A12 does in GB4. Unless I've missed some other information, we also have no...

    Apple A12 benchmarks

So much of what I said got completely ignored or only bits and pieces of what I said were analyzed with a very limited perspective to drill the point about single threaded wattage / TDP into the ground, and that wasn't even stated clearly by the other person in the first place, though the...

    Apple A12 benchmarks

I see it, but you can't make a direct comparison with these 8th Gen SKUs, the 8650u reaches 300 MHz higher frequency and will consume more power if given the same voltage, due to higher thermals (increased transistor leakage current related to higher temperature). Platform power also matters...

    Apple A12 benchmarks

This is part of the reason I said the spread is larger. Most other PC benchmarks are not as sensitive to crypto or memory bandwidth / latency. PCs are often configured with different memory speeds, which have a relatively large influence over the overall score in GB4, smaller than the real-world...

    Apple A12 benchmarks

I don't agree. Many reviewers leave GeekBench out of their test suites because of the inconsistency. Maybe laptop reviewers are using it most, but even then, the spread is all over the place across different devices, even if the results look more equal in other benchmarks. Are you assuming the...

    Apple A12 benchmarks

It doesn't matter, the chip is not running the maximum turbo frequency under multi-threaded load. Only single thread will be similar, but if intel normally allocates >15w to a single core for the maximum turbo frequency (highly likely) that will be a little lower too. Yes. There are no Linux...

AMD AMA - Starts at 12PM EST on Wednesday May 9

Thank you James for answering our questions. Is Raven Ridge still on GloFo's original 14nm process that Summit Ridge was produced with, or run with some / all of the "12nm" optimizations, or totally different optimizations than the "12nm" process has? I have seen Raven Ridge being referred to...

    Apple A12 benchmarks

I am interested in what the power consumption of Apple's SoC's are under loads. I am under the impression that Apple is fine using up all of its available TDP for single threaded performance. The i7 8650U scores really high in GB4, Kali Linux for WSL - 5.7k/18.7k. I assume this is at 25w...

Interesting. I'll go test with Performance Bias off. So far, I only tested with CB11.5, CB15, and AIDA modes. A user at chiphell on SummitPI 1.0.0.4 had similar results on an 1800X with the same motherboard...

AMD AMA - Starts at 12PM EST on Wednesday May 9

Hello James, I have a question about cache latencies: It appears I own a 1600X with 12-cycle L2 latency, and "enhanced" L3 latency. (I have not tested AGESA before SummitPI 1.0.0.6). The CPU was manufactured in early 2017, and purchased last June. As far as you know, were there any Summit...

    Ryzen: Strictly technical

A good 2600K was able to do 4.8-5 GHz+ on water cooling. I had one that was able to bench single threaded at 5.2 GHz on the stock dinky heatsink. Frequency wise, Intel has gone nowhere since 32nm.

AMD Raven Ridge 'Zen APU' Thread

AMD Raven Ridge 'Zen APU' Thread

No, Bristol Ridge also says Carrizo FCH I believe, and so does the Ryzen Desktop platform - they are just reusing the southbridge across all platforms. The multi threaded test just looks bugged, some scores are lower than the single threaded scores. I posted my take on the Geekbench leak on...

Why did AMD release bulldozer if they can still make good CPU's?

It seems they are still relying quite a bit on those tools - look at the amount of synthesized logic that look like blooms vs. Intel's cluster-of-chunks. I think they've gotten very clever with their power saving advances / technologies and layout wherever possible, but even Ryzen from the...

Official AMD Ryzen Benchmarks, Reviews, Prices, and Discussion

Not sure about Ryzen, but for example past AMD CPUs such as Phenom II had CPUNB set to 2 GHz when 3 GHz (50% increase) was possible on air, close to 5 ghz (150%) possible on LN2. Of course, the CPU clock did not scale that well, so I think greater than linear scaling compared to AMD's baseline...

Remember that AMD's demonstration was with stock cache / "uncore" / memory speeds - the LN2 demonstration seemed to be running at 140 BCLK which would I would assume had an overclocked L3 cache and memory (maybe DDR4-3000+ CL10) vs. DDR4-2400 CL14 or etc. OS might have been tweaked (services...

As an overclocker, I know you are very wrong. Overclockers 99.999% of the time test CPU for minimum voltage first, you are absolutely silly to think they just set a random high voltage and random clock speed, especially when so close to the 8-core CB15 record. It is not hard to...

As far as 5.1-5.2 GHz CB15 on LN2, it seems to be on par with Broadwell-E. The 8-core CB15 results are surprising, matching 5960X scores @ 5.8-6 GHz @ 2350-2450 points. :') I would imagine that 4.2-4.4 GHz on all cores should be the target for 1800X which has been my prediction all along but I...

Do CPUs just go bad and overheat?

No, that doesn't happen. And all Phenom II CPUs are soldered under the IHS - do not suggest you try to delid them. Check case airflow and CPU fan RPM - what are your temps like? HWMonitor is a great program for checking these things.

Assuming IPC is the same as those tests, if Ryzen ships at 3.6 / 3.9 (or 4.0), that is ~15% higher than the CanardPC sample which would put performance around or ahead of the 6900K @ 3.2 / 3.7. Their gaming tests also showed the i5 6500 5% slower than the 6600K with an 8-10% clock decrease and...

Advanced > Core ON/OFF function > Set to manual, reboot? You bought a board advertised with 4+2 phase power, 8 pin EPS is really not necessary since the board is not designed for excessive overclocking / high load. Well, if it had only worked that way. EVGA/Foxconn/XFX 590 boards didn't support it (though I have a modded bios that works), really only the ASUS M2N32 boards actually allowed this. By increasing FSB to around 225, up to ~1800 MHz should be possible. I have more experience with the AM3 ecosystem than any other platform. If you have 4.3 GHz stable, it might be time to explore overclocking the CPUNB to 2.6-3.0 GHz, just keep CPUNB voltage around 1.3-1.35v max. Heat will rise...
