explorer.exe 100% cpu usage

I have to agree with amdskip. I think at that point your pretty much looking at a reinstall. Whatever spyware you had did some ugly damage to Explorer. I had the same problem a year or so ago and could never get it fixed.

Windows xp pro startup problem

Sounds like somethings messed up in the windows configuration, either a driver thats bad or an application thats preventing you from booting in. Whatever you just installed previously, try taking it off and rebooting

How to have have speakers and my Zalman Theatre 6 at the same time?

There are splitters out there that you can get at Radioshack to have two audio devices connected into a soundcard. You'll have to check with the guys there though. Last one I saw was two years ago

As to what CD drives have it well its a burner format so your probably only going to see it in the more recent burners, pretty much ever 52x or newer. As to regular drives that support it it shouldn't matter as long as their relatively new and support reading of CD-RW. Btw, Google is your friend

Comcast and Bit Torrent

I run bittorrent behind a router on my Comcast at home and have never had a problem. However, my apartment has DSL and I'm behind a router and quite often when I get on bittorrent it'll kill the connection for whatever else is running (like IRC, IM, etc.). The only thing I can reason out is that...

Bit Torrent question, how does it work? why is it better than direct connect ++?

Bittorrent works by having a starter file, called a torrent that you download to your system. It basically has the "layout" of the file/files your downloading. Information like sizes, m5sum values, etc. Once you download the file and launch it in your bittorrent client it then sends a ping back...

Abit NF7-S vs AN7

I'd say stay away from the AN7. From everything I've read (though haven't experienced yet) it does not overclock nearly as well as having some odd temperature problems that I AM experiencing. Its also not supported by motherboard monitor :(

cannot delete file in windows xp?!

One other note: if you use Direct Connect this was a common problem with older versions of the program. It would basically "lock" a file so you couldn't remove or delete it. Was fixed in the latest (2.20) version. Not sure if thats what happened for you but thought I'd throw it out since you got...

Free Windows Security / Critical Update CD from M$

I signed up to have one sent to my home and a couple to work. I already have most of them burned to a CD anyways but it never hurts to have good, solid duplicates :)

Windows setup issue....

Well...you could be one really lucky person and have a mis-marked drive from WD but...somehow I doubt that. I think its more reasonable to assume that the firmware/controller chip on the hard drive is damaged. Honestly have never seen that before though

Remove duplicate WinXP install?

In your root C:\ directory you should have a file called boot.ini (You might have to go into Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> enable show Hidden files and folders). In that file you'll see two entries for Windows XP which is what your seeing when booting into windows. You'll have to remove one...

Would this memory work on an Nforce2 mobo?

Should work fine. All the specs look like what would be required by the nForce2 board though you might get some fun settings if you tell the memory controller to read off of the memory's native timings. You might have to force them yourself

Mixing ATA drives on the same IDE channel

It should default back to ATA/100 to support the older disk, not that there would be any sort of a difference. No hard drive even bursts above ATA/66 yet though the 73Gb Raptors get really close. If you want the best overall performance though have each drive on their own channel, that way they...

Seriously sounds like upgrade time. Your CPU probably isn't completely dead but I'd say if it was running without a fan for a week or more then its probably a tad...addled.

Expose for Windows...

There was a program out there that attempted to do it but performance was terrible even on a high end machine. Its more of a gimick. Frankly, I don't see it happening realistically on a PC until Microsoft actually makes USE of our GPU's under Windows. Read Longhorn. Otherwise get used to Alt+Tab

Memory questions...

I'd recommend just getting the 1Gb stick. It gives you more room to upgrade even though it might cost a few bucks more. Also, if you do plan on overclocking its generally easier to overclock one stick than it is two. If price is the same between PC3500 and PC3200 then get the 3500, otherwise why...

Best switch for LAN party?

You'd be fine with one of the cheap Gigafast 8-16 port switches you can get for like $10 after rebates. Otherwise I've had good luck with Netgear and Linksys switches and routers. Its normally what we have when we setup a LAN party. Even when we had a couple of switches and hubs daisy chained...

Logitech MX Duo keyboard problems..

You might also want to enable the secure encryption. Its possible someone else in the dorm has the same keyboard/mouse set and their software is sending out information on the same channel.

PC doesn't boot

Another thats always worth trying is to short the power switch on the board before you put it in the case. Just use a small, metal screwdriver to make contact with the two case switch pins on the motherboard to make sure that it turns on before you put it in. That way if it doesn't turn on when...

what is the best dvd-rom you'll recommend?

My Toshiba 16x DVD drive is a beaut. Not too fast at ripping mp3 or DVDs but its dead silent and is fast enough with regular CDs. If you want pure speed (but dont mind noise) get a Lite-On 16x DVD drive. Its fast at everything :)

Ok thats one I haven't come across. You might want to try calling the tech support for the company that manufactors the drive. It is possible that the drives bad in some way but like I said I haven't encountered that message so I really dont know.

Help choosing speakers

For $400 you could get just about any system out there that currently sells for computer setups :) The Logitech z560 (or even the 650 I think which is the 5.1 system), the Klipsch 4.1 or the 5.1 system. The Klipsch has harder hitting bass and a tad harsher highs...but its also quite a bit more...

Can you place Inspire speakers upside down and get the same quality?

The problem with placing them on the ceiling is that your really going to have a hard time of placing the "sweet spot" of the sound where you are. Its doable but with difficulty. It won't hurt the speakers in any way (but like the others said subwoofer + ceiling = bad)

Virtual Memory

Thats why I said I tend to ignore it once I got to larger memory sizes. When I was actually using that rule 64Mb and 128Mb of RAM were still the standards.

Need cheap home theatre setup =)

JBL makes some really nice gear and I think you'd be satisifed with their speaker line :) I also like Polk and Infinity. All three have some fairly cheap bookshelve speakers that sound beautiful.

problem with new cd-rw drive

Ok I'm guessing the drive is probably based on a Lite-On and I've been seeing similar problems with this using older versions of Nero. Make sure you have the newest version installed and that DMA is enabled in windows. Updating the version of Nero has generally seemed to make the problem go away.

first build hangs up in setup

Well that temperature is likely to be off since the Abit KR7A can't moniter temperatures directly from the die. Also you aren't really saying what heatsink your using but 57c does sound a tad high, especially if your just sitting there in the BIOS. Your going to want to look into replacing that...

Are Logitech Optical Mice better than Microsoft?

Oh and one thing I forgot to mention was that Microsoft's Explorer 3 just feels like a toy in my hand. It has NO weight to it and just feels like a cheap plastic toy you'd find in doller bin at some supermarket. The Logitech MX500 has weight to it, not a really heavy, tiresome weight but a nice...

For starters set the memory to a fixed size and the general rule of thumb (atleast with the Win9x series) was your virtual memory should be 2.5x what your actual physical memory was. Granted I tend to ignore that rule with any amount of RAM over 512...it just becomes pointless. I'd say you...
