Recently, I can't seem to install software which uses the windows installer.
When I try to install a program I get an error 1304 or 1303 (Basically insufficient privileges to access directory or file). The thing is, I'm installing under the administrator account . I've checked the...
What is the proper way to install office 2000 on a multi-user Windows 2000 computer so that all users can use it?

I recently tried to go multi-user on my Windows 2000 computer. I created an account for myself under the "user" group.
The problem is this: I have a game that I've registered. When I run the game in my new account, it says I haven't registered the game and gives me the trial version. As an...
Well, the PC was sent to the shop a couple of days ago....
When it came back it had a new motherboard....
I'm guessing there was a power surge during a recent thunder storm and that fried the motherboard.....but that's just a guess....
Thanks for all the suggestions!
I turned off the power and flipped a jumper to the position for clearing the bios......then I flipped it to normal and switched the power back on......
I also removed the battery.....
No luck......same problem.
I have this computer at work and one day it just stopped working. I've been trying to figure out just how a serious of a problem it may be having.
After powering up, the computer does nothing. No video signal. No PC speaker beep. The hard drive LED is continuously glowing.
I've tried...
I networked my two computers at home using a router. Computer A (which has a D-Link DFE-530TX+ NIC) is working fine. Computer B (with a D-Link DFE-530TX Rev. A1 NIC), on the other hand, is having problems. Everytime I try to download a file off the net, the download freezes at various stages...
A few hours messing around and a chat with D-Link tech support and I figured it out....
The ADSL modem I'm using (GNet BB0040) has a PPPoE dialer built-in. What was happening is that the gateway would attempt to dial using PPPoE to the modem which was already dialed in using PPPoE. D-Link...
I'm trying to set up a home network using a D-Link DI-704P router and an ADSL modem. The setup process sounded simple enough. Plug modem into router. Plug computer #1 into router. Go to router config. Setup connection as PPPoE. Fill in username, password and other setup fields. Go to main...
I just did a fresh install of windows 2000. Now whenever a new folder is created, it is not shown in the left hand side tree view of windows explorer. The folder appears in the right hand side list view only. Doing a refresh does nothing.
I remember having this problem before and I remember...
I recently upgraded all of the critical parts of my computer except the hard drive. I didn't do a wipe and re-install; instead I just switched motherboard drivers and installed all the new drivers for the new parts but kept my windows installation.
Now I have a problem . My new computer...
I noticed that Quake 3 has a "demo" command which will play through a level without user input. Since Mohaa is a Quake 3 (Team Arena) based game I'm wondering if it has the same capability? My computer seems to crash whenever I play games. If I could get Mohaa to play itself then I could use...
MailWasher - A neat utility which allows you to bounce spam emails so it looks like your email is not a valid address. I used to get 5 spam emails a day. Now I get 1 or 2 a week.

How come all (or most) windows system files and drivers have 8.3 filenames? Doesn't windows support filenames up to 255 characters long? Can't driver developers ditch 8.3 filenames like "CTPRXY2K.SYS" and use something longer and more descriptive? Can someone shed some light on this for me...
I posted in three forums and all three say that Sandra is unreliable....so I learned something today! :D
I downloaded HDTach 2.52 and here are the results I got for my drive:
Random access time: 14.1ms
Average read speed: 20000KBps
which seem to agree with the drive's specs.
I'm also gonna...
I used Sandra 2002 to test the performance of my ATA 66 hard drive. I got a drive index of 6000. One of Sandra's reference drives which is very similar to mine got a drive index of 17000. :Q
The drive is recognized and enabled by the BIOS as UDMA 4. Windows 2000 says my drive is using Ultra...
Since switching back to the 21.83 Detonators I haven't had another freeze happen....
Hopefully this is the solution although I will do more testing...
Those temps are with the case open...
The window is closed right now because I'm the only person in the room. It's a small room, and as more people come in, it heats up. That's when I open the window. It's winter right now, so the air outside is around -15C.
The games that have caused...
I'm in the process of getting MBM....until then I'm using PC Alert III which came with my mobo....
Here's what it says:
CPU temp: 37C

Do these sound reasonable?
Just got a brand new XP 1700+ with a GeForce 3 Ti 200......nothing is overclocked....
When I play games the computer freezes after about 30 minutes of playing....
I'm thinking it's a heat related problem...I tried opening the window to let some cold air in and opening up the case to improve air...

I upgraded the CPU and motherboard of my computer. I using my old computer's hard drive in the new computer. Not surprisingly, I can't start Win2k when the hard drive is hooked up to the new computer.

Upgrading my video card. Decided to go with the GeForce 3 Ti 200 series because of the great value and the overclocking potential.
I can get one of two cards. Either the VisionTek Xtasy 6564 or the MSI G3Ti200 Pro-"x" (not sure about the exact flavour, whichever is the cheapest, no-frills...
Well, am I glad I asked! Saved me the trouble of reinstalling the OS! :D
I read another post that said you had to reinstall the OS if you switched motherboards; that's how the idea got into my head.
Your idea sounds more reasonable although my motherboard pre-dates motherboard drivers...
I'm upgrading everything in my computer except the hard drive. I'm pretty sure that I'll have to reinstall windows because of the new motherboard. My question is: Do I have to wipe my hard drive? Can I just get away with deleting the windows directory and keeping all of the other stuff on...
I've been eyeing this motherboard and I have some questions about two of its features:
1 Are the USB ports on this mobo USB 2.0? I've seen people saying that they are 2.0 but nothing is said about it on Epox's web page.
2 Does it come with a bracket which holds more USB ports? I think I see...

For a while now my computer keeps "forgetting" its power management settings. This means that everytime I reboot, I have to manually enter them again.
I think I might have figured out why this is happening. I might have accidentally deleted the startup entry which calls the "LoadPowerProfile"...
Every now and then, my hard drive (IBM Deskstar 34GXP) will be chugging along in Windows when all of a sudden it stops, spins down, spins back up again, and then continues to chug along.
Anyone have an idea why it is doing this?
Thanks
I have an IBM Deskstar 34GXP hard drive (model DPTA-373420). On the IBM website, the capacity of this drive is listed at 34.21 GB.
I formatted the drive as FAT32 in DOS. When in Windows, the capacity of the drive is listed as 31.5GB. When I saw this I figured that the missing 2.7GB must have...
Well there are all those .m3d files in the main dir of NOLF; Each looks like a driver for a 3D sound API. They all have names like "mssdolby.m3d", "msseax.m3d", etc. I think the "mss" stands for "miles sound system". I figure there must be a command...
Does anyone know a command line switch or some other method of enabling the various 3D sound APIs that NOLF supports?
I see all those .m3d files lying around but don't know how to enable them.
Thanks.

I just switched from a 2 to a 4 speaker setup, that's why I didn't notice the rear speaker problem and why I didn't notice anything wrong with the card...
I'll try VoS and see if I can turn up anything...
Thanks.
Hooked up some Cambridge Soundworks FPS1800s to my Aureal SQ2500...
When in stereo mode, there is no volume on the rear speakers...
When in A3D mode, the rears are very faint...
I thought it might be the speakers, so hooked them up in reverse...now the rears are normal and the fronts are...
