After you're successful in contacting Microsoft and getting them to re-license your OEM, please come back and post the contact information and process, I would like very much to learn from your experience, thanks!

Files and folders from desktop randomly vanishing

What background-running programs does this computer have? Is the computer on some kind of Cloud and/or external hard-drive sync? I'm grabbing at straws, trying to cough up a couple of possible causes of the file deletions.

    Freebie windows security must haves?

Within Google Chrome, on the advice of others, I've been using uBlock Origin for some time now. AdBlock and its subsidiaries are aok also. Avast AV, Avira AV are both great choices, when installed via custom or advanced. SpywareBlaster is great for host file operations. Malwarebytes AM version...

After switching to Windows 10, everything is cramped into small spaces

"...My Intel Graphics Control Panel gives me the option for custom resolutions, but it warns me that I can fry my components if I use it, so I'd rather not..." Changing resolutions will not fry anything; however, one can damage the monitor and maybe overtax graphic card by changing or upping...

How do I find particular/specific information on a corrupted hard drive?

Although no help in this thread today, going forward, for future backup and restore operations, one thing that really helped me a lot is that I gave every hard-drive a unique name, I gave every partition (outside of SysRes type partitions) a unique name; that way, I always know which hard-drive...

    Win 10 Malwarebytes anti-malware result

I hope you set MB to quarantine rather than delete; that way, once you confirm false positive(s) -- you can simply restore said file(s).

After switching to Windows 10, everything is cramped into small spaces

I missed it, how many inches is the display, the monitor? For my Windows 7 and my 26" TV (acting as a computer external monitor) - I reset from 125% to 100% and set my resolution to 1366 x 768. That might work for you, I'm not sure about Windows 8 or 10.

Is a fresh install enough before selling an old PC? (or should I do a long format)

What program was used to do that full format; I'm puzzled.

Is a fresh install enough before selling an old PC? (or should I do a long format)

Thanks JohnC for updating my knowledge about ccleaner's wipe free space. I was under the impression that ccleaner's wipe free space would fill every free sector with Zeroes or something. JohnC, also, I thought Full Format also fills every sector with Zero -- am I incorrect?

Is a fresh install enough before selling an old PC? (or should I do a long format)

When the computer is idle for awhile, you can use ccleaner's wipe free (empty) byte-space. Once you start that, it is best to not do any big-time explorer.exe operations until it is finished.

+1 on the UPS! I have a few around the apartment to protect computer center and expensive VHS/DVD & TV combinations.

    Cloning and reinstalling OS

Paperdoc, if I re!ad your very informative post correctly, you were able to have both source clones on that one target external HD? I'm geeking over that one!

    Cloning and reinstalling OS

TechmanC, that's been my experience with ATI, later on with Macrium Reflect and Image for Windows. Restoring is much easier than OS or data recovery, agreed.

Trying to install Windows 7 Pro

Techmanc, you're right as rain, my friend! I was distracted by outside noises and forgot to say what you're saying: if motherboard failure, of course the license can be updated! :)

Trying to install Windows 7 Pro

You are aware that once that specific OEM Windows 7 Pro is installed, it is "married" to that computer for life :)

    Cloning and reinstalling OS

"If they are exact images, they are cloned. If they are backup images, they require restoration." Some sources will disagree, some will agree. According to some sources: a clone normally means an entire source hard-drive is copied onto an entire target hard-drive en toto, et al.

    Cloning and reinstalling OS

If one does not desire to clone, one can make full images onto external media of the OS partition(s) and Data partition(s). Those full images can be restored by any usb or dvd boot as described by earlier posters.

    Reviving Desktop from Water Damage

I worked for an onsite replace part or parts company awhile back, and learned that lesson VirtualLarry pointed out: often, in situations like or similar to thread starter's, it is best to group-replace all suspect hardware components; for example: often, I was sent out with power supply...

Does formatting external hard drive erase everything?

Once a drive's byte-space has been over-written with Zero "from front to back" -- maybe a $25-50K data recovery hardware process can read the prior "corner residuals" and get bits and pieces back. Much like going to an auto junkyard, and putting a wrecked and scattered car pieces onto a tarp.
