    $65 for a working T4x mobo is a good deal. Have you checked the fuse on the mobo yet? You can find it's location using the IBM documentation. It's not too hard to get to.

    I recently updated my various boxes from Firefox 3.0.x to 3.6.x and since then have noticed this "freezing" right after starting them up. Happens on each different machine.     Worst case scenario, don't throw it away. You can always sell the parts, especially since it's a T4x.

    x31/32 Thinkpad. A bit heavier than the x41, but uses a regular 2.5" PATA notebook HDD instead of the slower and harder to find 1.8" drive in the x4x series.

    IBM started doing this with the T43 Thinkpads a while back. BIOS would pop up a warning if you replaced the HDD with an "unsupported/unapproved" model. :rolleyes:

    Don't take your T61 apart yet! Go over to http://forum.thinkpads.com and do some research/ask some questions. Your vidcard may be replaceable/repairable, and those guys are the experts on this sort of thing. Worst case, you can probably sell if for parts, especially if it's got a desirable...

    ***I may be totally off-base***, but I seem to remember something about these being BIOS-limited to 1.6Ghz if you're running w/o the battery and are using the 65W (as opposed to the 90W) AC Adapter. Try Googling it, or look at Lenovo Forums, or maybe NBR Forums for more info.

    You have to initialize your disk. Go to Computer Management>Disk Management and follow the prompts to initialize and format it, and create partitions if you want.

The stock Intel IHS fans are fairly noisy at 12V, and not a whole lot better at 7-ishV, and that's about as low as you'd want to go and still have decent cooling, even...

    Press a piece of rubber gasoline hose, or vacuum line (get this stuff at an auto parts store) over the existing knob. Take the Fanmate with you so you can find a tubing size that fits snugly.

  31. File corruption woes -

    Errors will sometimes show up in "Event Viwer", right in the OS (assuming Win 2000 or XP). Swapping out suspect IDE cable and checking/rechecking results in Event Viewer may give you an answer.
