Yeah it would seem that OpenSuse has done a good job on this release.
Alot of nice features and faster package management.
There is a slight problem with the latest kernel2.6.25.5-1.1-pae and wireless
The Madwifi rpm's are out of date and/or incompatible with the latest kernel.
But...
Myself I have tried.
PCLinuxOS and Mandriva 2008
Both are very simple distro's that just seem to work. And installs pretty much everything.
Both are also live CD's so you will have a chance to see how it matches up with your system.
To install just click on the install icon on the desktop...
Get the Atheros drivers here for Suse 10.2 32 bit.
http://madwifi.org/suse/10.2/i586/
You need the top one and the other one will be the one that matches your kernel.
download the two files right click file and prompt it to install with yast.
And you should be good to go.

The only thing linux isn't that good for is gaming.
K3B burning software is great.
Open Office get's you by. Price Free.
Multiple desktops
And not having to worry to much about virus.
Just for a quick look at all the distro's out there.

I'm Running Suse 64bit without any problems.
One thing that helps is making sure your hardware matches up.
http://www.softwareinreview.com/cms/content/view/60/
Also running a couple other 32 bit distro's
I know you are asking about Ubuntu 64 bit. And I hope this doesn't confuse you.
But I have been running Suse 10.2 64 bit since it come out. "last fall"
I had no problems installing it. Except I used Firefox 32 bit Browser and flash.
Due to some of the problems Drag mentioned.
And that...
Myself I like the IBM T series laptops.
They seem to match up with Linux pretty well. The only downside is they are a little expensive.
Hp builds a good laptop and I feel Acer builds a decent laptop for the price.
You pretty much have to look at the hardware each model laptop on your list...
Here are some thoughts on Microsoft's latest threat .

Sounds like Microsoft must think the GPL v3 has teeth. :)
Like was mentioned If anything would ever come of this it would be tied...
First Linux was Red Hat about 5 years ago. I was running it on a P2 350.
But I was totally lost. When I would get bored with Windows I would mess with Red Hat.
Eventually it starting getting easier.
Then next was Suse 9.3 and things started clicking with this distro.
Looking back I have come...
I find that for me Linux is a better tool for the internet I can surf and do things without worry.
I don't need to run virus protection.
I do a virus scan every couple months. Just out of habit from windows.
And have been running Linux virus free for over a year.
Try doing that with...
I know that there is some settings you can change under power management I think.
But I am not really all that familiar with Ubuntu.
Hopefully someone running Feisty Fawn will know.
I would just run Ubuntu off of the live CD to see how it matches up with the hardware on your T41.
And then install it.
But from what I have read and as stated above it should match up pretty good.
I'm running Suse 10.2 on a R40 without any problems.
I think most of the ThinkPads match up...
A lot of people uses G parted live CD. It's free. And pretty easy to use.
But as always backup your drive before trying to do something major.
I image that Ubuntu would also be able to partition your drive for you,
Are you planning on installing 7.04 feisty fawn? It is suppose to work...
Well I don't have any proof to post except that it was Vista Ultimate. "April,18th" That they was talking about that day.
They should at some point and time, come out with a power point presentation that will be down loadable.
When I come across it I will post it.
Sorry I didn't get...
Smilin
I'll work on it for you.

Why play a game on a 19" LCD when you can be playing games on a 60" Plasma
What part of the burden of proof concept do you not understand?
I heard it,I need no proof. You want the proof google is your friend. If it is that important to you.
loup garou
Tomorrow I will maybe get to computer shop. And will let you know.
Then Bsobel if it is transripted go google it yourself. ;) April, 18th around 1300hours

Was this with Vista or XP.
If it was with Vista did you tell them the PS took the board out?
If so that is good to know.
Juktar
I have pretty much bought only OEM with my builds. You have to if you want to compete with the $299.00 Dells
I agree, before with XP you could replace the MB and get away with it.
But with WGA and Vista crackdowns I don't think you will be able to get away with it. I feel Vista...

I Like I said....It's hard to back something that was said on a live Microsoft Partner program.
I guess we just wait and if SP1 comes out.
The other thing I said was.....Have a motherboard go bad on you and the manufacturer doesn't make your model board anymore.
Along with having to...
Bsobel
It's hard to back something that was said on a live Microsoft Partner program.
I shouldn't need to back anything up anyhow. Like I said Vista isn't a good OS right now. Maybe a year down the road it might. Maybe it will never be...who knows.
And is that what you think? My opinion...
Bsobel
Seems everthing you disagree with is FUD.
I'm not really sure why you are trying so hard to sell Vista?
Could it be because Vista is such a hard sell?
It all boils down to freedom of chioce.
I see computers out there still running Win98 and the people are prefectly happy with it...
Heck running Vista right now is kind of like running Linux. You need to hack and teak it just a little to suit your needs.
I was also wondering are you having to disable IPv6 in Vista? Is it causing any slow down problems?
Change is kind of scary.....But 6 months down the road you just...
Why would that P*ss you off.? You need thicker skin.
Yes Vista has lots of problems.Hopefully a year from it will be more polish.
But to bash people for there opinion is BS.

mechBgon asked : Did the Microsoft Partner discussion mention retail Windows Vista licenses at all?
And my...
I have belonged here since 2000 and I post my opinion about some things I heard on a Microsoft Partner Program about Vista.
And now I am a troll .
Guess I will just go back to the lurker mode.
And I don't really care if you think I am lying or not. I know what I heard...I guess only time will...
I didn't really hear them talk about it. I just caught about the the last 10 mins.
They talked that instead of SP1 they was going to do it with updates and patches. Not really sure why that is.
They was also talking about some printer issues. Which I was only half listening to.
Right now...
Bsobel
On Microsoft Partner site on Wednesday both them things was talked about. And they was asked a couple of times.
If they are not true is Microsoft spreading FUD?
I'm just quoting from what I heard on MS site.
We don't take kindly to completely made up mis-information.;)
I have had the opportunity to learn some things about Vista through the Microsoft Partner Program.
Some good and most stuff not so good.
A couple of the not so good things.
There is not going to be a SP1 coming out.
Have a motherboard go bad on you and the manufacturer doesn't make your...
The way I look at it is......Firefox is Firefox whatever OS you are using.
And Thunderbird is Thunderbird.
As long as you are the installer and the tweaker. The users should get along fine.
But as mentioned if you have room why not dual boot?
With linux you have very little virus...
Myself I have become pretty dependent on linux machines.
I love the multiple desktops and not really having to worry about virus's
They do everything that I need them to.
Right now I am running Suse 10.2 64bit and it is a solid and stable distro.
And I am running KDE and Gnome Desktops. I...
Myself I prefer Suse 10.2 64bit.
I didn't find Ubuntu's 64 bit as freindly.
I would make sure your hardware supports 3D first.
Google and see if your video card is supported.
If you have cable....Download Ubuntu and Suse live CD's and see which distro you like better.
You really can't...
I would say Arkaign pretty much answered your question.
ME is pretty much a POC operating system.
I have had some machines which I could never get ME properly installed and working right. And once in awhile I would get a good install and ME wouldn't run half bad.
My two cents you would be...
Suse comes with burning software. What desktop you using, Gnome or KDE?
KDE it is K3B and Gnome It's CD/DVD creator.
Here is a good link on setting up Suse and has the pacman link for an installation source.

Sounds like reuters is trying to stir the pot.
I'm not happy with the Novell/M$ deal.
But I am running Suse 10.2 64bit and it is a really nice 64 bit distro.
Like I said I have run both 32 and 64 bit XP systems.
And in most cases running tests, both the 32/64 bit... they were almost neck and neck.
I really don't feel XP is viable 64-bit Windows solution yet. They are still lagging.
In linux I have run 32 bit and 64 bit 10.2 Suse, and the 64...
