Win 95 help.

What are the other system specs? You might be able to run with Win2k Pro or Win98SE instead. I have Win2k Pro running on my wife's laptop, a P166MMX with 80Mb of RAM.

If you could bump the RAM to 64Mb or better, Win98SE wouldn't be too bad, otherwise Win95B will do. If you go with 95, you'll want to grab all the updates, including a later version of IE from M$.

Dell 14.1" Flat Panel , what's the temp ?

On the 1501FP, there *is* an analog interface for use with any normal video card. I had borrowed one from our Point-of-Sale IT support person and had it connected to a Dell Optiplex GX110. The picture quality wasn't all that great, but it sure did open up space on my busy test bench...

What linux distribution you would recommend to your mom?

One thing to add is if your mom is taking PC classes, the instructors assume that their students have Windows boxes at home. My mom's first class was an intro to PCs, using Win9x boxes, and then her second class was for MS Excel. She would be less than pleased if I installed Linux/StarOffice...

Win2k, Fat32 or NTFS? Is there a difference?

You want to go with FAT32 if you still have old disk utilities you plan to use. For example, I do a lot of file transfers for side jobs with an old DOS version of FastLynx, an ancient Laplink-style program. This program will *not* work under NTFS....

hibernate in win2k

Hibernate's cool if you have a notebook and work at a company with multiple offices. If you have to visit multiple places in oe day, you can release your IP at Site 1, hiberate, wakeup at Site 2, and renew your IP there and keep going.... I use it everyday on my laptop, but never on my desktops.

Take it from experience, you don't want to be paying for eqpt. if you can't afford it. You'll pay way too much in interest if you don't pay the balance within a month or two, thus reducing any "bargain" you thought you had....

win 98 error msg - need help

You probably had a program installed at one time that referenced that file, but after uninstalling the program a registry key was never removed (or a reference to the file in the system.ini file, but that is less likely). Run regedit, backup your registry, then to a search for...

I agree w/Psychoholic, if one has physical access to the PC, s/he can pop the lid and pull the jumper for the password. If there is no jumper, then the battery on the motherboard can be pulled and the power from the motherboard will be drained in a few days. Replace the battery, and voila...

NTFS vs. FAT32....any advantages or disadvantages?

One thing to keep in mind is that you may need to replace some of your older FAT16/FAT32 disk utilities if you make the leap to NTFS. The other thing you will want to research is certain workarounds for NTFS required by some newer disk utilites (e.g. Ghost 5.1). Good luck!

Win 2k - 64MB vs. 104MB

I can attest to "snapiness" with repsect to RAM upgrades. In one of our offices we have a Dell Optiplex GXPro with a Pentium Pro 180 processor and 112Mb of RAM. We upgraded it from 64Mb of RAM last year, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much quicker apps launched, windows opened...

Poll: Pool: OS/2 - Who still use it? (or knows who uses it)

I remember reading that a lot of restaurants still use OS/2 in conjunction with a touch screen monitor for their food order management systems. There are at least a number of restaurants in the Chicago area that still use it (e.g. Denny's).
