I tried a 7200.9 and it sounds almost exactly the same as the 7200.10. So close that I'd swear they must have labelled the .9 wrong. Is there a util that would tell me?
apparently this is the way to tell the difference between the whiney 7200.10 and the quiet 7200.10:

thanks. I did some reading and found the post where someone discovered how to tell the difference between the silent and noisy drive. Unfortunately theres nothing on the outside of the box to tell and when I try to RMA this drive, Seagate will discover that theres nothing wrong with it other...
Does anyone here have one of the newer Seagate 7200.10 hard drives that use perpendicular recording? I've got one and it makes this high pitched noise that I'm sure will eventually drive me insane!
Its a wireless router but the connection is wired. The problem is simply convincing the router to give the NIC an IP address. I've tried other routers and other NICs and it seems the only problem is the combination I need to use. I cannot log into the router from the P5B machine.
Title pretty much sums it up. I've got an Asus P5B + Netgear WGR614v6 router and they refuse to play nice. My PC cannot get an IP but if I use my old router it works fine. I'd happily use my old router but then the various laptops around the house would have no internet since the old router...
Its a Realtek...
So it appears to be my router that is the problem. I tried an old router and it worked fine. I may try resetting the router to its default settings to see if that fixes anything.
I posted this in tech support but this forum category would have been a better choice... Please take a look and let me know if you have any ideas. I'll be RMA'ing the board tomorrow if I cant figure it out.

(mainly just go to the last post)
ping 127.0.0.1 works fine. I manually gave the NIC an IP address and now it shows up on the router's "attached devices" screen. But there is still no network access. Anyone seen this before?
I tried that this morning with no luck but I might try that one more time before I consider RMA'ing the mobo. I almost feel like using a NIC i have on hand instead of going through the hassle of returning it but according to the specs this mobo has a gigabit NIC and I have none of those (but...
1. I tried the cable connected to the pc I'm using now.
2. It shows up fine in device manager. I think an add-on NIC will work fine but I'm annoyed that the mobo NIC wont work. I'll pull a nic out of an older machine this afternoon and try it.
3. XP Home
I went into the advanced tab of my NIC and entered a value for "Network Address" but it doesnt appear to be the usual xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx format. Is this the correct method to manually enter a network address?
I'm usually pretty ok at putting pc's together from a pile of parts but this time I'm wondering if I have a defective mobo. Just got an Asus P5B and fired it up after assembling. Everything was fine, Windows installed, I put in the Asus cd and let it install its drivers. But I have no network...
I have no idea what a thermal pad is but the arctic silver website says if I have it on my HSF I need to remove it. I see three gray strips of something on the bottom of my HS... looks like silly putty to me. Is this the thermal pad that I need to remove?
Two quick questions:
1. Should I mount all my hard drives in the lower area next to the psu? I hear the Seagate 7200.10 is real hot and I wonder about putting it down there if things will get too hot.
2. Is reversing a fan so that it is an air intake simply done by unscrewing it and...
sorry I've been away but I'm back to thinking about my case problem... I think I've got an idea that I'm sure I'll get slapped for but here goes. I'll either get the P180 + the FAR Ultra V Series 400W for a total of $100 + tax with the intention of upgrading when I can find a great deal on a...
yeah I know but I'm trying not to spend too much on this new pc and I figured the P180 was already quite expensive so it must have a psu. I've been using a Sonata (with the psu it came with) for two years and its been pretty good.
thanks for the comments guys. I went to Frys to look at the P180 and they were out of them so I got a rain check. Now I'll have some time to think. Those Rosewill cases are impressively cheap so I'll have a look at them.
FYI, I'll be putting a Core 2 Duo E6400 (moderately overclocked) in...
Was all set to buy a P180 when I noticed it has no power supply. I noticed Frys has an Antec Truepower 480 for $50 but it seems a lot of peeps here dont like that psu. I'm really hesitant to spend $150 on a case/psu (spent 70 on my current Sonata 2 years ago)... Is there anything else out...
American Express has their gold card for $75 a year :|
Citibank has a $59 program where you get bvg, extended warranties, etc :|
Does anyone know of one that doesnt charge a fee?
circo has a high rating on resellerratings.com... they sure do give you a lot of options when ordering a case... I wonder how I would know if the case is any good.
anyone ever heard of newzpig.com? They were constantly working on their crap too but allowed free accounts with unlimited downloads until they were ready to start billing. Then when they were ready to bill, they disappeared. :(
im not sure how to clear the cmos jumper... this is a dell board, they might not include that.
the first partition is active in fdisk
ide2? As in the secondary IDE channel? I havent tried that, although my cdrom and cdrw are using that at the moment.
I discovered (being the genius I am)...
