Massive security hole in CPU's incoming?Official Meltdown/Spectre Discussion Thread

Intel rightfully feared that government is not to able to keep the secret. Or to keep the secret for itself only? ;)

There will be differences among different rigs, games and settings. I have tested two games. Results cant be generalized. So they cant DF/CB's results. The average truth will we somewhere in between. But now its safe to assume, that most performance drop comes from syscall I/O penalty, which is...

I confirm this. I have the +- same results with CDM (Win+BIOS patch).

I made some benchmarks on my rig (i7-8700k stock, asrock taichi, 3600MHz ddr4, sams. 960pro, 1080), without any patches and with Win+BIOS. Fallout4+RoTR - no change in fps (+- 1%), the only big hit is on syntetic SSD benchmarks caused solely by BIOS patch. Intel benchmarks "responsivenes"...

Its backwardd compatible decision. Its much easier to create new simple principle, which will work only for new apps.

Months is nothing if you need to fix OS and firmware and must check: hundreds of processors, several OS with several builds/distros/... each, and thousands sensitive applications (AV, security, VM, games, industry). Just think about it, ouch, ouvie... The only possible strategy is to bring...

So, if its due sw patches and firmware (now general in the nature), is it correct to assume it can be tweaked to better performance?

How do you know, that 19 μsec overhead is caused by CPU, and not by OS?

I believe nvme perf hit comes after OS functioning, so it can be mitigated by MS. There is no way branch prediction can influence pcie transfers. Its MS kernel patch to blame I/O perf hit. And if its sw, it can be tuned.

Hmm, I am thinking how its realted. Lets have a server(s), retarded by ptaches. How I solve the situation? I will sell them for low price on ebay, and restock with - what? Server with the same flaw? Forget bout AMD, there are no hundred thousand modern amd servers on the whole market.

Only in Crystaldiskmark alone. Not in ATTO. I have near zero influence on my rig (Win10pro, 8700k, 960Pro 1TB). EDIT: Before patch After patch Quick RoTR test Before [fps avg/min/max]: 146/73/222 110/40/157 101/40/165 sum 120 After 146/77/229 106/41/151 98/37/161 sum 117

Coffeelake thread, benchmarks, reviews, input, everything.

Results depends on game and scene selection. There were tests, where GTA-V had 50% fps in ivy bridge to skylake (!) comparison on GTX 970 (!). It seems like clickbait to me rather than serious test. I have completely different gameplay in Arma3/GTX970 after upgrade i7-3770K@4.1 to 8700K, despite...

Coffeelake thread, benchmarks, reviews, input, everything.

You are missing a point. Practically all current game engines are more or less descendants of some ancient codes. It doesnt matter at all if its working. The only thing that matters is that's largely played AAA game and its CPU demanding. Its perfectly OK to make it as reference for CPU...

I love these proclamation coming from "forum experts". Fallout 4 is complex game, of course its cpu intensive.

It did tell us specifically: 1] without optimalization ryzen performance can be very poor not only in games, 2] only about two games out of hudred got optimalizations

    Why?
  22. H

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

In that case SK-X should excell in Cinebench , right? Because of its big L2 and non-inclusive L3. Which is not the case.
  23. H

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

U sure? Because 8700K have more cache. Intel itself satted +11% ST performance.
  24. H

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

Yes, it was "delayed" (it wasnt really, its in use) until there was no other option (like smaller process), despite its cheaper solution :) It has performance impact because of interconnect necessity and slow cache sharing. BTW Ryzen is not multichip. Its single chip with module design. This...
  25. H

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

Its cost effective. Definitelly not innovative. Multi chip design was abandoned long ago for the reason, repeatedly proven by Ryzen's multi-CCX heavy performance hit in some applications. Thats why Intel is working with monolithic designs as far as possible.
  26. H

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

There is no reason for that. Kabylake on 14nm can easily achieve this freq on all cores. There is no magic in one core on 4.7, actually its a litlle bit boring. And dont forget we are working with leaked probably-benchmark on early alpha platform, god knows about memory freq/timings.

So, no desktop was announced today. It seems rumors from mobo manufacturers that cpus are not ready for end Q3 release was true.
  28. H

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

No, he is right. Coffee will be significantly faster in common workloads and similar in multithread. Ryzen will stay lonely king-of-the-cinebench hill :smilingimp:
  29. H

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

I cant imagine advertised 11% sc gain against 7700K with lower than leaked clockspeeds. I see like 3.8/4.7/4.3 on that picture. Ofc my vision is compromised with ME WANT syndrome.
  30. H

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

no objections against that. I support the idea, that sk-x is not best solution for enthusiast gaming - cf-lake will be.
  31. H

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

Correct way is selecting cpu according its results in actual games , not mythical multicore games. Noone's blaming cpu for sw capabilities, but it doesnt change a fact that specific cpu is better in one type of sw, and worse in the other.

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

Its not relevant to measure product success by company's size. Product is good or bad, its not "good enough for amd".
