YANBT (Yet Another Noobie Build Thread)

Looks good, but there's room for improvement. You could consider buying faster RAM, the Corsair XMS 1GB kit for example.

    dvd drives

Aopen makes the fastest DVD-ROMs around, they are a must buy if you can find them. I believe the model was the AAP 1648. You could also look for the slot load Pioneer. When it comes to burners, you cant go wrong with NEC, get the 3520 or 3540.

    Ram or CPU

I voted for option 1, since there isnt a wide performance gap between a 3200 and a 3500. Unless you have special needs, 1 gig should be more than what is needed though.

Please help me monitor hard disk temperature

Not sure where you're from, but I've seen and used computers where the ambient temperature is 38~40 degrees celsius - with no AC and no problems. You should be fine as long as your case temperatures aren't ridiculously high.

Bad to walk around with a laptop on?

No hard drive likes being 'tapped' while it is running. You could walk around with the laptop as long as you ensure that it does not get get bumped around while switched on. Being upside down shouldn't be an issue.

Hard drive configurations for my HTPC

I'd return the Raptor and buy another 250gb drive now for the RAID array (doesn't your mobo have it onboard?) - this is if having RAID matters. You can partition the 160 GB to create a 20gb OS/pagefile partition, and store shows on the remaining ~140gb, and on the array as well.

Hard drive configurations for my HTPC

A Raptor is overkill for an HTPC, server or no server. Even 5400rpm drives will serve the purpose with some juice left to spare. Now that you've bought it, use it for the OS & pagefile, clean up the 160gb and use it to store recorded shows. Nothing changes on the 250gb. I would return the...

    First time builder

Everything looks good, except for the case. Why buy a case with a power supply and buy a power supply separately? I'd buy a better case from Lian Li or CoolerMaster/Kingwin and a Seasonic S12 power supply.

Which path shall I head down?

If you're yet to buy these drives, then stay away from the 36gb Raptor and the 80/120gb drives. If you HAVE to own a Raptor, get the 74gb and put the OS & pagefile on it. Just one Seagate 250gb drive will give you more capacity than those two 120s in RAID0. If RAID is what you're after, then...

Creative has a bunch of fixes on their site - I'd try to get the auto-update feature to work again, and if it didnt, I'd just do a manual download. I use this feature regularly - just clear your cache/history, disable pop-up blockers and try again. Here's information on one of the updates...

how to improve dvd encoding or video processing performance?

Since you have 2 different sticks of RAM, make sure you're getting dual channel performance out of that rig first. If not, thats a simple thing to fix and bump up performance.

    Raid 0 Questions.

You'll be going from RAID1, which offers redundancy to RAID0, which doubles the chances of losing your data. Since you currently have RAID1, I would assume redundancy is important to you - and RAID0 offers none. The performance gains that RAID0 affords is nothing to write home about unless...

    New Entertainment PC

That case is at the bottom end of the spectrum for a HTPC. Consider buying a case from Ahanix or Silverstone instead. The PVR150 is a better buy than the 250 - it is a newer model and has better driver support. If you're using MCE2005 as the OS, get the PVR150 MCE.

    Question about computer build...

You shouldn't need a floppy at all if you can burn CDs with the bootable images instead. I guess the primary need for a floppy arises when you get around to the 'troubleshooting' phase of your ownership experience, among other things. I'd suggest you get a USB flash drive and use it as a...

    Is this the end? :(

If the fans dont spin, that shouldn't have anything to do with a failed HDD. Does the computer boot at all? Assuming the HDD failed, it would boot just fine and either pop an error up at the end of the boot cycle or give you a message that 'no boot disk was found', for example. More...

What is a low level format?

Another Q: Since it is recommended as the last recommended action, I'm also wondering if the so-called LLF procedure puts any undue strain on a HDD? Writing zeroes to the drive in my mind would just be a write/read/verify sort of activity - is there something else to it?

What is a low level format?

Thanks. If there were bad sectors on the drive, could I assume that these have been 'marked as bad' and replaced from the 8mb 'store' that typically exists on a HDD? Is there a way I can tell if bad sectors do exist, and if they were overwritten at any point? Powermax did not throw up any...

What is a low level format, exactly? I bought this used 40gig Maxtor from FS/FT which turned out to be a dud. The seller shipped me another drive right away, and I connected it and all seemed fine. However, when I tried to access it from My Computer, the rig hung. So I try formatting it from...

    Loud Seagate drives

Yeah, if you dont like the noise the Seagate makes, just put the sucker in an external USB enclosure that supports SATA drives internally. I would run Seagate's Sea Tools to make sure there isn't anything wrong with the drive first though.
