    Lock this thing PLEEEEEEASE!

To those atheists among you who so loudly declare that our Iomega and TDK drives are not the One True Plextor, well guess what, it really doesn't matter. I will admit that I have not actually cracked one open to compare the internals. That said, the fact remains that these drives do accept and...

    Lock this thing PLEEEEEEASE!

Iomega and TDK 12/10/32 drives are the same hardware as the Plextor drives. While TDK has done a good job of keeping their drivers current (v1.07 firmware available - based on the Plextor v1.07,) Iomega has not. Anyone owning or considering the Iomega drive can download a patch which will...

P-4 puts Thunderbird to shame !!!!!!!!!!!

Hmm - I have an Athlon 1.1GHz, I only paid $200 for it, and I didn't notice my computer running slowly. Am I missing something?? I do see large zip files and _some_ of the newest games running faster than my old celeron 300a @ 450, but other than that I don't even see any difference in...

UPDATE: ATI Radeon DDR now only $100 (free shipping)

Interesting. My 2d has been great for the past year with my GeForce DDR card, running at 1600x1200 all the time on my 19" hitachi with default fonts/small icons. My buddies come over and stare, even my ol' blind dad can use it. I think some of it has to do with the board design - my asus...

Anyone know why my CPU fan speed goes up under load?

I'm absolutely certain it's the CPU fan. I just replaced the stock HFS with a Taisol CGK unit with a Delta 30CFM fan on top. The sound of the Delta is very distinctive, and it's easy to hear it speed up. The PSU fan is very quiet, and I couldn't hear the fan change speed with the stock HFS...

Anyone know why my CPU fan speed goes up under load?

Can't be temperature, because it speeds up the instant the CPU goes under load. Not enough time for the temp to change. I can even make it do it just by clicking and dragging on a window drag bar or click-holding on a close button.

What kind of material stops case vibrations?

Here's my solution to your resonance problem - pot your whole computer with Arctic Silver. It's a great fluid dampener, it's guaranteed electrically non-conductive, and best of all, it transfers heat second to none! I'll sell you 5 gallons for only $20,000 - that's $15,000 savings to you...

Anyone know why my CPU fan speed goes up under load?

When I load up my Tbird 1.1GHz OC'ed to 1.2GHz, my Taisol (the big forged one) with 30CFM fan, the CPU fan immediately increases by 100 RPM. The instant I tell Prime95 to go, you can HEAR it load up. AFAIK, there is no way for the KT7 motherboard to tweak the fan speed based on CPU load, and...

    1.0GHz Thunderbirds are GREAT overclockers!!!

I was having trouble getting my 1.1GHz Tbird past 1150mhz. I figured its gotta be good for at least 100mhz over stock with the fine AMD-supplied Taisol HFS. Then I happened to glance down at my case. I ripped off my Intel(tm) Inside(c) - Celeron(c) sticker and replaced it with the supplied...

    ABIT KT7-raid - core voltage wrong ??????????/

Not too high, no. If its stable for you, there's no problem! More voltage adds to heat so if there's problems try better cooling. Nice overclock.

    1.0GHz Thunderbirds are GREAT overclockers!!!

Nikepete, have you tried running 9x133? That would get you 1197 and the faster, now supported 133mhz FSB, which has shown impressive gains in tests. You might have to do the pencil trick..

    Epoxy on Mobo

9v DC current won't kill you. It's pretty hard to be killed by DC, even at 1000V, unless there's so much current it burns you to death. AC on the other hand is bad, very bad.

    ABIT KT7-raid - core voltage wrong ??????????/

No, mine does the same thing. I think it's great. Just override the default setting and bump the voltage down and reboot and check until health monitor reads ~1.75v. No problem. This is the voltage your CPU is supposed to run at and it will run at the right temperature this way. 1.85v...

OEM AMD fan or Super ORB?

Well, my socket A tbird 1.1Ghz non-overclocked with AMD-supplied heatsink (taisol) on a KT7 motherboard in a not-very-well vented case goes from 34°C at idle to a max of 53°C at full load. "system temp" ranges from 28°C to 30°C. This was after I replaced the original thermal gum with...

    50 Degrees C OK for 1Ghz T-Bird?

Mine goes to 53°C when doing heavy stuff. AMD supplied heatsink. If it doesn't crash, then its not a problem. Might need to improve things if you start overclocking to make it stable, but until then.

    1.0GHz Thunderbirds are GREAT overclockers!!!

Posting is meaningless. They usually post at speeds much higher than they will run stable. I can post at 1.35ghz, but it isn't stable above ~1150mhz.

How long does it take to fry a t-bird with no hs/fan?

Hah hah, a Chrome Orb?! I may have lapses every now and then, but I'm nowhere NEAR *that* dumb! It was the OEM hsf from AMD, which is a Taisol. I told the sales guy the truth when I went to exchange it, and showed him the instructions and the result, and he laughed, and I deserved that, and...

How long does it take to fry a t-bird with no hs/fan?

I'm not really so dumb as to leave off the heat sink, but I *was* dumb enough to leave the little plastic sheet over the thermal pad. Actually, I pulled it off as the instructions said, but it left a second layer underneath. Not realizing the pad itself was supposed to be pink instead of blue...

how do you cleanup thermal grease?

For grease/paste, denatured alcohol (ethanol 100%) available in the paint section of any hardware store For phase-change material i.e. "bubblegum" pads use goof-off, wd-40 or kerosene, then follow up with the alcohol to remove the petroleum distillates you just used. Alcohol...

What's the most I can get out of my 1.1ghz Athlon?

Well, my Thunderbird 1.1GHz gives me rounding-off and other errors in Prime95 at 1200MHz (FSB 100x12) - even with 1.85 volts. It seems to run OK otherwise, but as soon as it hits 53°C - Prime95 pukes. OEM from AMD heatsink/fan, KT7-RAID. (Is this typical, guys?)
