    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

BonzaiDuck For some reason the caching of the data drive just hosed the entire MFT. I mean 99% of the files and folders on the drive were just gone at a glance, of course they were all still there, some corrupted, real pain to recover. Most would have just reinstalled everything. Had I not had...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

I've had it corrupt my game drive once. Game hung up and on reboot the drive was unreadable, checkdisk found hundreds of corrupted folders and hundreds of thousands of files. I managed to restore *almost* everything. I copied the game installs from my laptop to the desktop on the ones that were...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

I upgraded my L2 cache to a Samsung 256GB NVME and my WD Black 2TB (previously thought it was a Red) failed so now I've got a temp 2TB WD USB 5400RPM drive. Without Primocache Cyberpunk 2077 loads a save game in 48 seconds. With Primocache it loads in 18 seconds. Definitely worth it.

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

The only thing to add, Samsung Magician is strictly L1 cache, performance is virtually identical to Primocache with a 1GB or 2GB L1. I had Magician running on my 850 Pro and Primocache on my other drives, eventually just ran Primocache as I could use multiple caches or just one big cache with...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

It's pretty awesome playing with it, the entire video is in the L1 cache, old games like Jedi Knight Academy, Unreal Tournament, etc, fit in the L1, just open the app and fiddle with it for the sheer hell of it. The caching consolidates writes on HD and SSD, extending the lifespan of both. Have...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

It can always be faster. I just upgraded from an Ivy Bridge to a Ryzen 3700x (basically a 3770 to a 3700x) and it's definitely faster in caching than my old system or my Skylake laptop. Even the SATA SSD is faster, system just has more power to throw at every problem. If you don't have any...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

I've got multiple SSD's, WD blue in testing @ 550MB/s, not a dramatic improvement over the old Intel SSD as the majority of my wait time is decompression (1 second data burst then 25 seconds decompressing vs 2 second data burst and 25 seconds decompressing), even when loading directly from the...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

You're still showing a fundamental lack of understanding of how this works. Download it, run a spare SSD as an L2 cache and find out yourself. 30 day trial. The first time it loads it is at HD speeds, admitted. The second time it loads it is coming from a FULL SSD, not a half-assed single...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

The only issue I have with this is Primocache does cause an excessive amount of wear on the SSD regardless of the type. I wouldn't want to risk my OS SSD for that. A $25 128GB or $35 256GB SSD dedicated would be preferred. I'm looking at some OEM Hynix and Samsung NVME drives on ebay, office...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

After playing with it a bit more, yeah, it would help.. If you have enough L1 or L2 to fully cache your DB you'll see much better performance. If not, it won't do a lot but buffer writes so they don't interfere with your read speeds.

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

I've got an 80GB Intel SSD that is caching my 2TB 7200 RPM game drive, Windows is on a 1TB WD Blue 3D NAND. With tons of mods Fallout 4 would snag if I ran through the level while reading. Primocache fixed that 99%. Moving it to an SSD corrected it entirely. Gran Theft Auto V, Cyberpunk 2077...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

Yeah, the design differences between 3dxpoint and MLC, the 3dxpoint should outlast it. MLC and TLC tend to survive a lot longer than their ratings, which is very nice considering the reliability of the first couple of SSD generations. That being said I'm using an OCZ 60GB and two Intel 80GB...

Teen expelled for wearing a sweater with a rainbow on it in front of a rainbow cake at her 15th birthday.

Idiocy? The kid was suspended because he went shooting with his mother. They actually lost their shit because he went shooting with a family member. There was no threat there except for the obvious intimidation the school was trying to push on the family. That is harassment by a government...

Teen expelled for wearing a sweater with a rainbow on it in front of a rainbow cake at her 15th birthday.

The point of it being a reply to the comment, "Public schools don't usually give a rat's ass about what the students do out of school hours that doesn't involve the school." which is patently false now. Schools are constantly punishing students and faculty for their social media posts. A lot of...

I'm paranoid that Earth will run out of oxygen.....

That depends on the tree. Oak and a lot of hardwood are really only alive on the outer layers, the inner layer is not quite dead but effectively not doing anything. The pine planted by the paper mills is alive through and through and grows year round. There's no way an oak that is only...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

I've adjusted my opinion on that MLC/TLC thing since that post, I've had a WD Blue 1TB 3D NAND for a year now and it gets used pretty heavy and it's still at 99% endurance left. They'll be fine... lol Good to know about the MLC drive tho. That's not a bad price period. Most TLC 128GB are around...

I'm paranoid that Earth will run out of oxygen.....

Plants primary source of mass is CO2. Trees and grasslands are growing between 20 and 40% faster than anticipated. CO2 production isn't going to somehow magically make trees die off and the vast majority of the civilized world is smart enough to replant trees that they use for pulpwood. There...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

I really don't care about your thoughts on Linus. The site editors don't seem to mind him, regardless of all of that the video is full of good info with testing. You're just discrediting yourself with bias against the messenger.

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

Not every system can run Optane. Intel made sure of that. Further, not everyone can afford a 2TB SSD. Even an old Intel 80GB SSD with Primocache and a 4GB buffer takes a highly modded Fallout 4 startup time from upwards of five minutes to a little under one minute. That's not placebo. Having...

    Silicon Lottery Ryzen 3000 numbers

I wish they had 3600x numbers as well. I know it's a lower tier chip, likely limited, but 3 cores per CCX may offset the heat generated a bit, so it may overclock decently. The FX 6300 would clock quite well compared the 8 core FX. Not sure if that will repeat itself or not, but I'm curious.

First platform to use dual channel memory?

The instability on the KT133, KT266 and Nforce chipsets was primarily due to the hard drive controller drivers. If you disabled DMA access the Via chipsets were far more stable and both platforms were more stable when using the default Windows driver over the official driver. I would install...

First platform to use dual channel memory?

I paid $78 for 512MB for my PIII laptop shortly after I got it. The laptop would have remained useful for a lot longer as it was pretty much the same performance as the Pentium M, but my Pentium M laptop could handle 4GB of RAM, my PIII maxed out at 512. You're dead on about the PIII bus...

First platform to use dual channel memory?

The 840 on the PIII was dual channel in November of 99. It was funny, the later model PIIIs, the laptops were the only way to get good performance. The RDRAM killed the PIII with it's latency and the 815 SDRAM chipsets were limited to 512MB of SDRAM when they were finally released, initially...

First platform to use dual channel memory?

They were still classified as dual channel. I got it wrong initially, the 820 was single channel, the 840 was dual channel. They were a poor design, but they probably did help with the evolution of the memory systems, they had some forward thinking features as well as a whole lot of "don't do...

First platform to use dual channel memory?

Necro-post, but for archival purposes for anyone else searching this, the Intel 840 chipset for the PIII predates the 850 and is actually the first dual-channel memory controller. They tried RDRAM on the PIII first in November of 1999. It was a high bandwidth, high latency memory connected to a...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

I still use L1 on my SSD and hard drives even when I don't have an SSD available for L2. Makes a huge difference in user performance. Of course drive read/writes are still the same in the background, but I'm not waiting for the machine any more. A 2 gig L1 means moving a 1.5GB video file from...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

Depends entirely on the size of your cache. I'd probably host both of those on an SSD myself. By the time you had a cache large enough to host a VM you'd be just about as well off to buy a cheap, dedicated small SSD. SQL, depends on the size of the DB. If it's small (a couple gigs or less)...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

It really is. Compared to Optane it's like NVME vs SATA 3 SSD, but it's still a *huge* improvement over just using the mechanical. After a month or so just turn it off and use the computer. You almost want to smash the thing.

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

You should be pulling stupid speeds even without caching. Have you run CrystalDiskMark without Primocache first? Primocache can correct a lot of that, but the Acronis backup would still cause a pretty significant hit. It should still be able to serve a video stream unless you're talking...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

Primecaching also helps limit small writes going to the SSD. The SSD generally have a function that prevents a lot of small writes, but an extra level can't really hurt. I'm getting NVME speeds in various benchmarks depending entirely on the test size and my L1 cache size. It certainly helps in...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

I believe "Read Cache (SSD Only)" is only caching to an SSD, no RAM used aside from overhead. I have that option on my desktop with an SSD used for cache, I do not have that option on my laptop without an SSD cache. Why would your Vega steal 4GB of RAM? APU? If you have an SSD for cache then...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

I've got it caching my 2TB game drive, doesn't really require any modification beyond the defaults to do that. When it is set to read cache it only loads data to your SSD for reading, writes go directly to the hard drive. This will speed up reads, shorten load times, etc and have minimal wear...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

You don't have to uninstall Primocache, just disable the cache in the Primocache control panel. The settings seemed pretty straightforward to me. The "best" config is subjective and/or specific to your system. I've got a laptop with 20gigs of RAM that the BIOS will only allow use of 16gigs...

    Question Is PrimoCache worth it?

Long time techie, don't post much in the forums, so forgive the necro-post. BonzaiDuck, after reading your comments on Primocache on this forum I tried it out a few months ago. You don't necessarily notice a *huge* improvement initially, it is gradual, however, let the trial expire and it...

Some of us build computers... admittedly much smaller volume than any of the OEM, but we'd like to have the same parts available. I've built more than a few custom systems for aerial photography, had to run off of a cigarette adapter, so max of like 50W, total system draw. Of course I can...

Now the nerd in me is thinking... I'd love to see some testing between the heterogeneous computing of the APU vs the Ryzen 7. Seems there may be a situation where the APU could outperform the high end unit. Any plans to add a GPU to the six or eight core Ryzen?
