need to cheaply re-tension several hundred vcr tapes

just finished the test of [fast-forward to the end : complete rewind] : 5 times. No joy, same total-static-only on playback. I am starting to suspect that I am stuck.

need to cheaply re-tension several hundred vcr tapes

yes the player does create tension. however i had noticed in the past that tapes recorded on one vcr would play fine on that vcr but were troublesome on other vcrs. As someone fairly ignorant of the technology, a tension problem is the only hypothesis that I can conjure that fits the symptoms...

need to cheaply re-tension several hundred vcr tapes

Thanks corkyg, interesting response. Assuming that the problem is bit rot rather than tape tensioning, would the video still show okay when hitting fast-forward or rewind DURING the vcr playback of the vcr tape?

need to cheaply re-tension several hundred vcr tapes

VirtualLarry, thanks for the quick reply. I don't know what Macrovision protection is. I don't think that copyright protection is relevant here. Each of the old tapes was manually recorded by me at home, from tv programs. Unfortunately, I was NOT able to find ANY TRACKING BUTTON on the...

need to cheaply re-tension several hundred vcr tapes

I have about 800 old (10-30 years) standard vcr tapes recorded at 6 hours per tape. I am going to attempt to transfer the videos to my hard disk. My previous vcrs had all died, so I recently purchased a Mitsubishi HS-U746 (4 head) used vcr at Amazon. I also purchased a video capture card that...

need vcr + video card to transfer vcr taped movies to hard disk

Postscript: Very informative replies, including the link to http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/video-restore/1567-vcr-buying-guide.html. I watched several youtube vcr repair videos and then experimented on my (already dead) vcr. I convinced myself that it would be too time consuming for me (a...

need vcr + video card to transfer vcr taped movies to hard disk

Thanks to Insert_Nickname and TheElf for continuing this thread. I think that collectively, the comments of thecoolnessrune, Insert_Nickname, and TheELF broach complex topics. My understanding is that a professional will charge approximately $20/tape, which is way too expensive for me; I will...

need vcr + video card to transfer vcr taped movies to hard disk

This does burst my naive bubble. With several hundred tapes to transfer, if 1/2 of them result in something reasonably viewable, then I will be happy. It seems reasonable to at least make the salvage attempt, but (for me) too expensive to have a professional copy the tapes. Good warning about...

need vcr + video card to transfer vcr taped movies to hard disk

Very clear information, thanks. I am leaning towards the DIY route, and now know to focus on "usb tv capture" for 1/2 of the puzzle. I still need a recommendation for a vcr or a key vcr phrase (e.g "4 head") to search for. I welcome more responses.

need vcr + video card to transfer vcr taped movies to hard disk

I request hardware recommendations for a vcr + video card to perform a very specific task. My vcr recently died and I have several hundred standard-def (vcr taped) movies that I would like to transfer to my 6tb internal hard disk. Once a video file is saved to my hard disk, I will use ffmpeg...

cooling to counteract Virtualbox video streaming

Many cable-tv websites (e.g. cox.com, hbo.com) do not support any linux os. As a workaround, I installed Windows 7 Pro in a Fedora 26 Virtualbox. When I maxout the Virtualbox settings (based on my hardware), I have Virtualbox-allocated 4 core to the Virtualbox-cpu, 20gb ram, and 128mb video...
