what's with all the 16:9 monitors now a days?

Just got upgraded at work to a 22" 1920x1080 monitor (from a 19" 1280x1024). I prefer it to the 1680x1050 I'm on now (more pixels) and do not care at all that the aspect ratio is the same as my TV (also a monitor). Works well for my office work, I'm already fine with gaming on my tv. In...

7900gs - All video playback dark & red??

Odd problem (not even sure if it is hardware). Any video playback (AVI, DVD, Youtube, etc) comes out way too dark and shifted to the red. Desktop, games, etc are all fine. I have the same problem regardless of the player (WMP, VLC, embedded video in sites like youtube). Any ideas?

    I've never seen Top Gun

If you got your man card from Tom Cruise, I'm afraid I have some bad news for you . . . Seriously though, I've never seen Top Gun either. Too busy fighting bears to waste my time on cheesy gay military movies in the 80's.

Congress to Aid 2.2 Million Sub-Prime Borrowers

I was using poor person somewhat facetiously, as this thread has been all about the potential bailout of the poor, whereas I think the proposed bailout would be for the over-extended (and stupid, to some degree), and the institutions greedy and shortsighted enough to lend to them. I have only...

Congress to Aid 2.2 Million Sub-Prime Borrowers

It amazes me how many of you are taking the knee-jerk path of claiming this is a bailout of poor people being proposed. In many of these cases, you couldn't be further from the truth. Let's make it simple with an example: - Poor person obtains subprime loan at the peak of the market - Poor...

Do you think religion was irreplacable as a factor guiding individual human conscience in history?

Your question is not inciting, it is fair. For me, all moral thought can be extrapolated from what Christians would call the golden rule, and I call common sense. Basically all religions have the same thought. Do unto others and all that. Why? Well, to me it just seems fair. I don't...

Congress to Aid 2.2 Million Sub-Prime Borrowers

Perhaps because this is in fact stealing from the middle class to give to the rich and (dubiously) help out the poor at the same time. Who owns this debt? Those are the people who stand to lose most on defaults. The poor sods who have negative equity in their houses stand to lose zero...

Do you think religion was irreplacable as a factor guiding individual human conscience in history?

"If not for religion, which historic doctrine would have guided the individual human conscience? " Leading question FTL. I've never seen any evidence that religion was the genesis (pun intended) of morality in humanity. Other animals have been proven to show compassion. Are you...

LOTR DVD version vs HD transfer

Hmn. With our new 42" LCD, I've been itching to pick up the full extended editions of LOTR. I am thinking though that a little patience might be in order. I hate buying things twice, but I'm getting impatient. This comparison seems to show as big of a difference in dynamic range as...

    Is a convertible inherently feminine?

I have to disagree 100% on that. Corvette and Mustang convertibles are among the girliest of all cars. After all, for years, the barbie dream car was one of the two. I base mine on what I see overdressed bleach-blond middle aged women driving. On that note, the convertible versions of...

Kind of telling when they have to selectively quote and manipulate to make their point. If the science on the skeptic side was so robust, they shouldn't have a problem getting people on camera to explain it without trickery.

Programming with 4:3 or 16:9 LCD monitor?

Well there are many ways in windows to split two windows, but I also agree that dual monitors are the way for any and all coding. Widescreen is great for entertainment, multi-monitor setups are great for productivity.

If soda had the same alcoholic effect as beer...

Fightin' words those. Soda - no health benefit. Beer - proven health benefits for moderate drinkers, serious health risks for heavy drinkers. Certainly not a good idea as a meal replacement, but as a way to wind down after work, 1-3 beers is fine as long as you burn the calories...

We went to visit family in a different part of the country (funeral) recently. I normally drink only beer brewed within a few kilometres of my house, with the occasional import thrown in for variety. I had a Miller Genuine Draft. If I wasn't visiting, the last half would have gone into the...

What do you think of girls who live with guys?

Depending on the guy and the girl, it could be an issue. If it is an issue that you have EVER lived with a guy roommate, I would agree with the posters who say this should turn you off a guy. In the case where you are CURRENTLY living with a guy roommate, there is far more to it. Lots of...

Katie Holmes replaced in Batman Sequel

So true, so true. Next we need a Fantastic Four sequel without Jessica Alba (I know, ATOT has an inexplicable fascination with her, but she just plain can't act). Then they could come out with a sequel to Daredevil and replace ALL the actors as well as the director.

Not all Soy Sauce is the same!

My local supermarket has about 100 diferent types of soy sauce (estimate - I didn't count but it takes up 1/3 of one side of an aisle). Strangely, I have found the Japanese stuff to work best for Japanese foods, Chinese for Chinese foods etc. etc. How odd.
