When will Core i7 CPUs and Motherboards drop in price?

I'm not to familiar with the site, but vgchartz is claiming i5 has been pushed back to Q4. Anandtech has an older article listing availability in the 2nd half of the yer. It seems that with both AMD and the economy performing poorly there is little reason for Intel to hurry.

My take on Intel's marketing and roadmap is that i7 will not drop all that much. Core i5 is to be the moderately priced i7.

Flash drive instead of hard drive?

You can find CF to IDE converters pretty easily. Using a CF card for the main drive is not unusual for mini-itx systems.

Drobo alternatives

PSU warm while off

I plugged my workstation into a kill-a-watt and found that it consumes 6 watts when 'off'; this might be enough for the power supply to feel warm. I think some motherboards draw various amounts of power when off for things like alarm and LAN based power-on features.

Well you are describing the exact MO of the virus. RPC/svchost.exe has been hosed. Cut, paste and many other apps (window's update maybe?) no longer function. Get the update directly from microsoft.com - save it locally and run it. Run the cleaner again and reboot.

How can I change the pitch of pc speaker?

Are there any external drive enclosures that are powered off USB?

Many of the 2.5" listed at newegg mention "bus powered" either on the description, the box in the "See it!" photo, or at the maker's website. A powered USB port is supposed to provide 2.5W (500mA @ 5V). That's actually kind of cutting it close for many 2.5" drives' spinup requirements. No way...

Almost all of the 2.5" enclosures should be able to run off a powered USB port. The parasitic PS/2 power adaptors are for when you connect the drive to an unpowered port.

Sandisk CompactFlash PC Card Adapter $9.99 great for transferring data to laptop quickly

There also exists the reverse: an adaptor that turns a PCMCIA card to a CompactFlash card for use with palmtops with CompactFlash slots. It'll stick out quite a bit though, and not all devices support it. The Axim is listed as compatible though. here

ktg & Joe221, I got mine yesterday, and have not had any problems with it on any of my computers (older dell workstation & laptop with USB 1.1 and an Intel mobo USB 2.0 port). All my stuff is running 2k though, so maybe the problem is with xp drivers?

Best/ most reliable memory test for a server???

Umm.. You listed ECC ram. Isn't the point of ECC that it will tell you when it is failing? If you are getting correctable memory errors your OS should be logging it somewhere. If you are getting uncorrectable memory errors those should also be logged. Check you bois ECC settings and figure...

USB power and laptop 2.5" hard drives: Anybody able to start up on USB power alone?

I have a USB enclosure with an IBM travelstar 40GN in it. I've used it with several different USB 1.0 and 2.0 ports with bus only power. If you are still concerned Toshiba specs some drives at 2.7w for spinup power (but Toshiba lists 'nominal' specs, while IBM lists max peak). bliab

Are heatpipes for hsf good?

Heatpipes can be designed to work against gravity. This is a review of a heatpipe coolermaster where the reviewer ran his tower upright and on its side without observing a difference in temperatures. And here is a CoolerMaster figure which claims that their heatpipes are not effected by gravity.

Confused hardware question...

As BDawg said it may also be a problem with your building's power. My friend lives in an old building with bad wiring and he had a problem similar to yours. He got a UPS with voltage regulation (AVR) and his problem cleared right up.
