HP Z2 Mini G3: tiny workstation

Wow, these things look great.. Thanks for these posts. I've been wanting a beefier replacement for a Mac Mini, but Apple has all but abandoned them. I was looking to put together my own Mini-ITX, but this has pretty much everything I was looking for - Non-Intel graphics, E3 processor, C200...

When will Core i7 CPUs and Motherboards drop in price?

I'm not to familiar with the site, but vgchartz is claiming i5 has been pushed back to Q4. Anandtech has an older article listing availability in the 2nd half of the yer. It seems that with both AMD and the economy performing poorly there is little reason for Intel to hurry.

When will Core i7 CPUs and Motherboards drop in price?

My take on Intel's marketing and roadmap is that i7 will not drop all that much. Core i5 is to be the moderately priced i7.

Flash drive instead of hard drive?

You can find CF to IDE converters pretty easily. Using a CF card for the main drive is not unusual for mini-itx systems.

Whats the slowest computer you've still got in everyday use?

Until recently (March) I was using the following: Dell Precision 410: 2 P3-850 coppermines 30GB 10k scsi GeForce3 512MB RAM The machine originally shipped with a P2-300 and was over 9 years old, running 24/7 90% of that. It still browsed just fine, but I retired it due to the noise and...

    Drobo alternatives

I was looking at the drobo for a while but ended up spending a little more for the HP EX470 (which runs WHS) and have been very happy with it. In addition to everything mentioned above I like that WHS stores everything on mostly normal NTFS partitions. If the drobo (or a RAID NAS) fails...

    PSU warm while off

I plugged my workstation into a kill-a-watt and found that it consumes 6 watts when 'off'; this might be enough for the power supply to feel warm. I think some motherboards draw various amounts of power when off for things like alarm and LAN based power-on features.

Power supply for multiple external devices?

I must have about a dozen low wattage wall warts or power bricks under my desk. I know a lot of them are 12v, probably a few other standard voltages. It seems like it would be possible to replace all or most of them with a single power supply. This would reduce a bit of clutter and probably...

Looking for used laptop - what models?

I've been been browsing ebay for a used laptop ~$300-$350. I constantly see Thinkpads recommended here, but was wondering if folks could suggest model lines (T23, T22, A20, A30, R31) or even specific models? Feel free to suggest non-Thinkpads too. I'm looking for something that is... -...

    Some Simple Mac/OS X Questions

With my current notebook, when it started feeling a bit slow I slapped in a faster harddrive and more memory. That deferred having to get a new one by a year or two for me. Replacing the HD was one screw on my Dell, I guess I cannot expect the same of these more compact notebooks I'm looking...

    Some Simple Mac/OS X Questions

I'm looking to get a new notebook, and a PowerBook is a tempting option. There are a lot of simple things I don't know about Macs. Could anyone answer these questions? 1. Can OS X use Windows network (disk/printer) shares? If not is there a 3rd party utility for this? 2. I have a few...

    please save my bro's dell!

Well you are describing the exact MO of the virus. RPC/svchost.exe has been hosed. Cut, paste and many other apps (window's update maybe?) no longer function. Get the update directly from microsoft.com - save it locally and run it. Run the cleaner again and reboot.

How can I change the pitch of pc speaker?

You might be able to install a windows sound driver for the PC speaker. It will sound awful, but you'll then get the default windows 'ding' sound (or the best a pc speaker can manage) instead. You can then change the .wavs that windows or your mail client use to something else. Something like...

Are there any external drive enclosures that are powered off USB?

Many of the 2.5" listed at newegg mention "bus powered" either on the description, the box in the "See it!" photo, or at the maker's website. A powered USB port is supposed to provide 2.5W (500mA @ 5V). That's actually kind of cutting it close for many 2.5" drives' spinup requirements. No way...

Are there any external drive enclosures that are powered off USB?

Almost all of the 2.5" enclosures should be able to run off a powered USB port. The parasitic PS/2 power adaptors are for when you connect the drive to an unpowered port.

MP3 player that uses Compact Flash?

There is the Nex IIe. I have the older Nex II and it has been pretty much what I expected. Not great, but a good deal considering I already have a bunch of CF. It looks like the 'e' version fixes most of the deficiencies of the one I have. The only other CF player I remember finding was the...

Sandisk CompactFlash PC Card Adapter $9.99 great for transferring data to laptop quickly

There also exists the reverse: an adaptor that turns a PCMCIA card to a CompactFlash card for use with palmtops with CompactFlash slots. It'll stick out quite a bit though, and not all devices support it. The Axim is listed as compatible though. here

Sandisk CompactFlash PC Card Adapter $9.99 great for transferring data to laptop quickly

PCMCIA and CompactFlash are electrically very similar so the converter does not have to do much. It's not too unusual to find such a converter for $5-10. Other flash format converters can be quite costly because they need additional controller chips. Buy.com has one for $7 but it's back...

ktg & Joe221, I got mine yesterday, and have not had any problems with it on any of my computers (older dell workstation & laptop with USB 1.1 and an Intel mobo USB 2.0 port). All my stuff is running 2k though, so maybe the problem is with xp drivers?

    Who makes quality UPSs?

You are unlikely to find "good prices" and "sine output" at the same time. Even most of APC's consumer models are stepped output. Their Smart-UPS line has mostly (but not all) sine output models, but they are by no means cheap. The 700NET model retails for $400 and has sine output. I've had...

Best/ most reliable memory test for a server???

Umm.. You listed ECC ram. Isn't the point of ECC that it will tell you when it is failing? If you are getting correctable memory errors your OS should be logging it somewhere. If you are getting uncorrectable memory errors those should also be logged. Check you bois ECC settings and figure...

USB power and laptop 2.5" hard drives: Anybody able to start up on USB power alone?

I have a USB enclosure with an IBM travelstar 40GN in it. I've used it with several different USB 1.0 and 2.0 ports with bus only power. If you are still concerned Toshiba specs some drives at 2.7w for spinup power (but Toshiba lists 'nominal' specs, while IBM lists max peak). bliab

    dual monitors... dual keyboards possible?

I'm pretty sure that win98 is incapable of doing that; it's completely single-user. Hooking two monitors up simply gives you a larger windows desktop. I did see this kind of setup several years ago with an NT machine, but that involved additional hardware and software. Windows terminal...

    Are heatpipes for hsf good?

Heatpipes can be designed to work against gravity. This is a review of a heatpipe coolermaster where the reviewer ran his tower upright and on its side without observing a difference in temperatures. And here is a CoolerMaster figure which claims that their heatpipes are not effected by gravity.

    Power supply scent?

Sounds like ozone. I've smelled it from monitors or laser printers, but not from a computer power supply. Is the odor noticeable when using your computer or just when you get close to the fan output? If it smells from a distance and you spend a lot of time there it may not be good for your...

Is there such thing as a 1.13 GHz Coppermine, or are the vendors on PriceWatch just st00pid?
