He did say, "...CHEAP! please." If he would have said, "...CHEAP! PLEASE!" or just "...CHEAP!" then it would be a different story.
Usually a straight through cable is needed for a direct connection between the cable modem and the wan input of the router. If a hub is used, crossover is needed between the hub and cable modem (either via a crossover cable or the hub port configuration).
