Help me diagnose a cpu fan

I thought CPU fans ran at 5V - the chunkier case fans run @ 12V. Try running the fan from a battery. Well away from the computer, shove a paperclip into each pin-socket, and try to run the fan from a 9V (small square) battery. If it doesn't work either way round, you might have a dead fan...

The default pad is more of an insulator than a conductor - it's about 0.5mm thick and doesn't have the best thermal conductivity in the world. I agree that the orb isn't great, but there's no point in compounding its problems by using a lousy thermal compound. Besides, you only need the thinnest...

Angering the overclocking gods. They do exist!

best solution for drilling fan holes in case??

Erm, a drill? If you've got a plastic case, then use a drill bit for metal in a hand drill (power-drills run too fast), if you've got a metal case then a power-drill is fine. You'll need to drill 4 bolt-holes to mount the fan, and a grid of 4mm holes to suck the air through. If the grid of holes...

Or you could do what I'm about to do - buy 1 Y-splitter, cut one of the plugs of it and the fans, and use junction-block to marry the ends together, then hide the whole lot inside a little project box from radio-shack that can be screwed to the top of the case to keep it tidy

If you're talking about that lump of plasticine on the bottom of certain brands of heatsink (eg the Orb), it's rubbish - scrape that stuff of right now and use some silver paste - if, like me, you scratched up the bottom of your heatsink doing this, you'll probably want to polish it off with...

removing HSF off a duron

The most guilty parties for cracking cores are the Fop38 (clips too heavily sprung - they're fine if the clip's flattened out a bit) and Thermaltake Orb coolers, due to their circular shape giving an uneven pressure distribution over the surface of the chip. General consensus from other forums...

Just about everything causes cancer under the right circumstances (even vitamins) so I wouldn't worry. You get more carcinogens from half an hour spent driving into work than you get in a lifetime of using conductive pens... (reminds me of the study in England: do mobile phones cause cancer...

CPU Keychains...

I'm told that somebody else has managed to put a hole through the ceramic using a drill bit for ceramic floor tiles (not for wall tiles), and a patch of masking tape to stop the bit slipping. Myself, I'd just araldite a hook to it!

Pentium 4 1.3Ghz -vs- Tbird 1.1Ghz

Don't reckon so: I remember reading something about the P4 architecture being slightly different than other processors on the market, in that it's handling of error-interrups was poor - many games use error interrupts to trigger events because, ironically, they were faster on older processors.
