Cooling for a quiet 3900 AMD processor - what is recommended?

That 280mm corsair is perfect in the desktop with the 3600. You can barely hear the fans kick in. I wouldn't trust the 3900X in that motherboard, but it's great in the little midrange box. Before the intial aorus died within 3 days, the case fan were louder then the noctua. That EVGA 360mm...

Cooling for a quiet 3900 AMD processor - what is recommended?

The NH-D15 is the quietest. After the x570 aorus master died after 3 days, I RMA's it (NewEgg replaced it), but I needed something in the meantime, so I snagged combo deal with 3600 and an MSI WiFi gameing Edge and a 280mm Coursair CLC. That was almost as quiet as the Noctua, and haven't had...

    People avoiding GB B450 & X470 boards?

For what it's worth, even though the Aorus Master I bought died 3 days after it arrived, I still like it. It seemed very well built (frankly over the top) the BIOS was mostly laid out logically (two or three BIOS features were poorly explained in the manual), and that 3900X at least seemed...

Cool, cool. :) The 3900X build is air cooled, too. I got a Meshify S2 for it (so space isn't an issue), but if I had to do it over again, I'd get an O11 dynamic or something close to it. There's definitely no issue with airflow in there, since I strategically put enough NF-F12s in the right...

Cool! I was leaning towards that one, since it'll eventually end up in a mid-range gaming rig anyway, once I get this crap with the work desktop sorted out, and back up and running. Thanks! :D Oh, BTW, I've still got that Wraith Prism cooler that came with the 3900X (I used an NH-D15 for...

Did you go with an x570 board for that 3600, or upgrade the BIOS on an X470/B450? Since my motherboard kicked the bucket during a reboot just 2 days after I build the new system, I'm thinking about grabbing a 3600 and a sub-$300 (<$200 would be better) X570 board so I not only have...

PrimeGrid PPS LLR (CPU temp) challenge (for Ryzen 3000-series owners)! (Testing heat density of TSMC 7nm)

Whelp. It was fun while it lasted. Looks like the motherboard went tits up about an hour ago. Not even getting the little reset switch on the motherboard to light up. I pulled the PSU out of it, and connected it to the old desktop, and it powers up. I tried the PSU from that PC in the new...

PrimeGrid PPS LLR (CPU temp) challenge (for Ryzen 3000-series owners)! (Testing heat density of TSMC 7nm)

I wouldn't necessarily trust Ai Suite 3. On the desktop I just replaced, it would routinely tell me my case fans weren't active (despite being able to hear them run), and it would also alert me that the vcore had dropped to 0.00 while I was working. Any chance something is gunking up the...

PrimeGrid PPS LLR (CPU temp) challenge (for Ryzen 3000-series owners)! (Testing heat density of TSMC 7nm)

Huh. I just checked mine (it's definitely not at idle right now, but I'm not pushing it hard), and with basically everything at stock except enabling SVM and an XMP profile, and disabling PBO, the vcore on this 3900X is pulling more than that:

PrimeGrid PPS LLR (CPU temp) challenge (for Ryzen 3000-series owners)! (Testing heat density of TSMC 7nm)

I used Aida64 Extreme in Win10 1903, and didn't get a BSOD or a CTD, either. Not sure what the deal is there. The reported CPU and CPU diode temps in it were off by just 1 degree from each other in my tests.

It's the "Apply & Test" button at the bottom. After you click that, it'll show "Running Stress Test", with the normal meters still semi-visible behind that.

PrimeGrid PPS LLR (CPU temp) challenge (for Ryzen 3000-series owners)! (Testing heat density of TSMC 7nm)

Assuming I picked the right project, I predominately saw temps hovering between 65/66C. I briefly saw the temp jump to 80C when I shut down BOINC. I've attached the before and after (I just ran that project for 30min, since I need to get working anyway). FWIW, here's the hardware: 3900X X570...

Yup, even the normal 140mm fans can definitely get loud when the CPU is under heavy load, but those IndustrialPPC fans are even louder at full speed. The 120mm NF-F12s aren't exactly quiet, either. Still, they've got fantastic static pressure.

It's really dependent on which board has the features you need. There seems to be zero point in trying to overclock the 3900X, so according folks like Buildzoid, the VRM design on the $200 and up motherboards is perfectly fine. Those DIMMs are about 40mm tall, so the options with an NH-D15 would be to either raise the front 140mm fan up (if the case has enough space for that), swap the front fan for a 120mm, or remove it altogether, and use it like an NH-D15S and mount the 140mm fan as a case fan somewhere. The...
