I've been reading about PSUs and "rails". Do I have to be careful to somehow split the load of the various components...or are the cables already divided in such a fashion so that they won't be overloaded?
Thanks again for all the info. I might purchase it this evening. I've never swapped out a PSU before...any chance they include instructions, in English? ;). I imagine it's fairly straightforward...but I don't want to mess anything up.
I like that it's 550w...and the price isn't horrible. But the reviews don't seem so hot. Any idea if it will fit in the Dell Inspiron 530 case...or how I can find out? Thanks.
Tough call...the 500w is more than twice the price of the 430w. But I'm wondering how much of an improvement the 430w Antec is over my stock LiteOn 375w. I guess adding the extra 55w should be enough to give the PSU some breathing room.
My system is only a couple weeks old. I put the 4850 in it the night I set it up for the first time.
Anyway, it sounds like you guys are confident it's a power supply issue. What PSU should I get? Is this a good unit:
Thermaltake Purepower W0100RU 500W ATX 12V 2.0 Power Supply...
From the wiki:
When ordered with an Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad processor, the 530 is equipped with a FoxConn G33m03 motherboard and a LiteOn 375W power supply. When ordered in any other configuration, the 530 is typically equipped with a FoxConn G33m02 motherboard and a 300W Bestec power supply...
I added an Asus EAH4850 to my new Dell Inspiron 530. It's been working fine, but just the other day I noticed an error message in the asus smartdoctor. While it used to say "Your video card is OK" it now says:
VGA's voltage is out of safe bound.
Motherboard doesn't supply reliable 12.0...
Thanks. Just wanted to make sure they were physically interchangable. Although I was also wondering if the hard drive would operate more slowly on a SATA cable as opposed to SATA II.
stupid question...I've never had a SATA system before. I'm picking up a second hard drive (the wd6400aaks) for my new Dell Inspiron 530...does it matter whether I get a SATA or SATA II cable for it? The drive is OEM so I need to buy a data cable. Thanks.
But what about a high quality 350w psu, like the stock supply in my Inspiron 530? So if the 4850 runs 125w and the Q6600 95w, that takes care of 220w, leaving 130w for the rest of the system. How many watts will 2 optical drives and 2 7200rpm HD require? I'd rather not push the psu all the...

Just bought an Inspiron 530 Quad 6600. Also picked up a Dell 2408wfp. So while I'm not a hardcore gamer, I'd like to get a video card that can push 1920 x 1200 reasonably well. I'd also like to run everything on the stock 350w ps if possible, so I think I'm limited to the 8800GT series...
that probably explains why we didn't have much luck using an old ATI card even with the newest drivers. i think i'll try an Nvidia card. just to confirm, any recent Nvidia card should work, right? we don't need the latest and greatest though.
i'm trying to set up 2 monitors on 1 pc. however, what i want to do is have each monitor act as it's own desktop. for example...i'm going to be using the setup for a business presentation whereby people will be running a computer based training module on the left hand monitor while practicing...
these features (DVI) always start in the top models and work their way down to the mainstream units. the fact that the sony has it is good news...even if it is out of the price range for most of us. in a year it should be available in mid priced models like the denon...and in two years from...
thanks Sepen. i was a little worried about the compatibility of +r discs compared to that of the -r format...but it seems like +r are getting more popular every day.
DealyDo, I agree with you 100%...DVI switching would be huge, even if there were only 2 outputs similar to when component switching had just arrived. to me that would be more useful than DD 7.1 (how many people actually have a 7.1 setup?) anyway, i'm sure that HDMI (the new version of DVI that...
i guess you guys were right. yet another month has gone by and no sign of anything new on the cpu front. when was the last time either Intel or AMD were stuck at the same speed for this long? Intel's 3.2ghz chip has been out for at least 6 months, right?
very interesting...but it's hard to believe they just found out about this problem. don't they have a several year roadmap that they are on pace to meet? it seems hard to believe that they wouldn't know when their next generation cpu's will be available. if that were true wouldn't their...
does anyone know when intel/amd is due to release their next round of processors? it seems like they have been stuck at the 3ghz mark forever now. what's going on?
no, i only tried it in one port. good call...i'll plug it in all of them. if the port is functioning properly windows should recognize it immediately, right?
i just plugged my usb microsoft intellimouse explorer in and nothing happened. i didn't install the mouse software...but i didn't get a pop up indicating that windows found new hardware. maybe my usb ports aren't configured properly?
i'm running xp pro. never used the usb ports before. i tried connecting my nikon 995 after installing the nikon view 6 software...but when i try and launch the nikon transfer i keep getting an error message telling me that there is no CF card in the camera or reader. this is not the case. also...
i still haven't seen the keys yet...but i never had it activate while installing it. so that seems strange to me. i plan on giving this pc to my parents next week, so the last thing i want is for the os to lock up for failure to activate!
i haven't installed sp1 yet...but that shouldn't...
i just reinstalled my copy of xp pro...but i didn't run the activation during installation. but i don't see the keys icon in the bottom right corner telling me to activate. is there an easy way to see if my copy is activated? thanks.
