    Unable to edit system rigs

So, uh...thread necro time. Are system rigs dead? My bookmarked link no longer works so I'm guessing this was gone with the transition to the new forums/site?

RMClock and AMD X2 Brisbane CPUs - an unstable combination?

Any news on this? It looks like RMClock still hasn't been updated since '08.

Awesome. I had been looking for a recent comparison, but could not for the life of me dig any up. Thanks man!

    Battle of the 10-foot UIs

For laptop control, I'd recommend something like Logmein for easy, free remote access. For remote control, is it a Logitech Harmony? If you get a standard Windows MCE IR receiver the Harmony remotes can interface with that.

xbox 360 hdmi with a hdmi->dvi adpater on dvi monitor

There shouldn't be any issue with that kind of setup. I've gone from DVI output on a cable box and computer to HDMI input on the TV, and vice-versa. As long as you got the right adapters and they're not busted, you'll be in good shape.

    Battle of the 10-foot UIs

So what's the current consensus on HTPC user-interfaces? What's everyone using these days? I've not found any good links to comparisons between them, and I haven't played with any of them for at least a year and a half, so I'm a bit out of date on what's kicking the most butt these days...

Anyone notice a drop in Hard Drive Quality lately?

If you suffer repeated, frequent drive failures like the OP is, I think you should check to make sure you don't have really bad electrical wiring. It sounds to me like drives are frying out due to poor power input. If you're not running on an AVR UPS, then you should get one ASAP.

    Tiniest Bluetooth adapter around?

You guys rock. I had heard of the Princeton Bluetooth adapter on engadget back in August with that EXACT same profile, but couldn't find anybody in the states selling it, and never managed to stumble across that Cirago model in my searches. Thanks again!

So at idle, is there anything consuming your CPU cycles in the Task Manager? Are you on Vista or XP?

What is happening to my hard drive??

Constant disk access, often called "disk thrashing," is usually a symptom of insufficient RAM, heavy disk fragmentation, disk failure, or a virus/spyware infection. The first thing I'd do is a simple SMART diagnostic on the drive to determine it's health. You can perform this with software...

    Tiniest Bluetooth adapter around?

I'm trying to find a bluetooth adapter for my notebook that won't protrude too much. The smallest one I've found is about an inch long, not counting the part which fits in the USB port. Logitech recently released a non-BT notebook mouse which had an impossibly small RF dongle, so I can't...

Reading a Mac drive on a PC

I've got a client who needs some data pulled off of a external hard disk and transferred to DVD, and they don't have a DVD burner. Normally this would be a no-brainer, but they're a Mac user, and it's an Iomega brand external hard drive, so I'm guessing it's mac-formatted. If it is, what are...

    Penn and Teller on Creationism

Years of neffing on forums has taught me that as fun as it may be, there's about a .01% chance of dispelling a creationist loon's fallacies, misunderstandings, and ignorance about science as it pertains to evolution and cosmology. All I care to contribute to this debate anymore is what I...

    Memory for a HTPC?

The HTPC I set up for my brother is strictly for playback of DivX and MP3 files onto his 42" LCD TV. Since he doesn't do ripping, transcoding, TV tuning, or anything along those lines, he was able to get away with an Athlon 2000+ with 256MB of PC3200 on WinXP. YMMV, but he can play back h.264...

    RAM Question

I don't think you're going to notice a difference with what you're doing. If your computer is running slow, you've got spyware/virus/misconfiguration issues, because any computer with 2GB+ of RAM is gonna run damn nicely when doing basic office tasks.

    tv tuner cards recommendations??

Are you looking for SDTV recording or do you want HDTV? Because the latter is pretty much suckville right now as far as hardware and software support.

Any good CableCard TV tuners for PCs yet?

Will it work with non-local HD channels like TNT and HGTV, or pay HD channels like HBO and Starz? And will it work with any cable provider, or just ones that are nice enough to use QAM?

Any good CableCard TV tuners for PCs yet?

I've been aware of the 1394 loopholes a while; I think my Scientific Atlanta HD cable box is a candidate for the treatment. The only thing is I don't care about recording HD content a fraction of how much I want to timeshift it. I'm exactly the kind of legitimate consumer (and businessman...

Any good CableCard TV tuners for PCs yet?

As long as everyone sits on their hands and lets them get away with it. The morality police manage to band together to get the FCC to make sure the Janet Jacksons of the world don't go nipping in prime time, so how come the PC enthusiasts can't ban together to keep the cable cartel from...

Any good CableCard TV tuners for PCs yet?

I'm wondering how long it is before mom & pop / small business computer shops sue Cablelabs and the cable companies for keeping Cablecard support on the PC gimped to "certified" computers with bios tags and certification. The FCC mandated the Cablecard standard to keep consumers from being...

Lantastic on DOS and Windows 98

Does anyone have any experience with Lantastic troubleshooting? I've got a situation where a server (node1) can access files on a different server (node2), but node2 cannot access node1. They see each other, but node2 cannot browse node1. I'm not having much luck with the lantastic manager...

USB vs PCI wireless NIC ?

http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0246114 I've been dying to have an excuse to buy one, because it's one of the few USB models out there with a detachable antenna. Could make a great laptop adapter. Haven't had any personal experience with it though, so I...

Do high-gain wifi antennas really do anything?

While that specific antenna isn't going to give you much in the way of gains, a higher-gain model certainly will. $35 for a 4dBi antenna is borderline highway robbery. I've had excellent luck with Hawking antennas, which tend to be cheap and powerful. There are lots of resources on the web...

    Wireless and Wired together?

You have it more or less correct. You want any wired devices plugged into the gigabit switch, with a crossover cable running between the switch and router (it doesn't need to be a crossover if the router supports auto-crossover in hardware, which 99% of them do, but I always say better safe...

buffalo - whats cleaning out your wallet

I had the pleasure of setting up a cheap-as-sin Buffalo WHR-G54S tonite, the first time I've played with a Buffalo product. Once you get past the annoying auto-config crap and into the advanced settings, you find it has more features than a D-link at a similar price point, with comparable...

When is the Bigfoot Networks Killer NIC review going to be completed?

Clearly you're unaware of the excellent quality of Nvidia onboard NICs...and overestimate the quality of Intel ones. Just because the Intel one says "Pro" doesn't mean it's the cat's pajamas.

Need Wireless Network advice, large-area hotspot

Thanks for the suggestion! The only things the client has informed me of at this point is that they want it to be available to club members (though they haven't specified if that includes guests) for free, so there won't be a billing system. I'm fairly sure a single SSID system would be...

Need Wireless Network advice, large-area hotspot

I won't really know if it's outta my league if I haven't tried it I suppose. It's definitely high risk for me, but I'll know better if it's beyond my capabilities after I do the site survey next week. I'll definitely look into those ones. As far as authentication goes, I haven't consulted...

    Stronger Wireless Antenna

I use those to help cordon off my network's signal so it doesn't bleed into surrounding areas. I've actually taken to using aluminum flashing from the hardware store and using tinsnips or my paper cutter to shape it. It works a lot better than aluminum foil, and looks less chintzy. Even the...

    connecting two networks wirelessly

2 cantennas with line of sight can pretty much guarantee getting a strong connection. If you are pretty handy, all it takes is 2 pinapple cans, some copper wire, and n-connectors. If you got $100 laying around, you can walk into CompUSA and buy two cantennas premade. I've made them in the...

    Recommend a RELIABLE Wireless Router?

FYI, the WRT54G from Linksys has a known incompatibility with PPPoE on several Speedstream DSL modems. I've personally experienced a problem with the 4100 from SBC with the WRT54G. I would avoid them if using them if you plan on going with SBC/ATT/Yahoo DSL. Also, D-Link low-end stuff tends...
