Used IBM Thinkpad x40 vs Netbook

    Some of these netbooks push 3lbs (2.7 - 2.8lbs.) and I wouldn't call them heavy. I consider my 5.2lb. T61 heavy.

Used IBM Thinkpad x40 vs Netbook

I think playing with one in a store isn't going to be enough, see if you can borrow a netbook from a friend or family. The only alternative is the Dell Mini 12 but you need to "force load" Windows XP on it to get it to run decent. That's my fallback option, wait until they release a 2GB RAM...

    Inexpensive ultra portable (NON-netbook)?

I've narrowed it down to the Sony Vaio "T" series or the Thinkpad "X" series as an ultraportable. Keeping an eye out on fatwallet and craigslist, but waiting to see what deals pop up after the holidays.

Used IBM Thinkpad x40 vs Netbook

Ya, you need to use a netbook for a few hours to see if it's for you. I played with my dad's Aspire One and I did not like it. Too small to be useful for couch surfing, the keyboard and trackpad are just too hard to use. The HP Mini has a the best keyboard I've seen on a netbook. I've decided on...

Have you driven the new Accord?

I owned an '03 Accord V6 and test drove an '08 V6 sedan and it felt like a mild evolutionary improvement. The added weight seems to cancel out the added power. I now own a 3 series and the Accord is no BMW. It's a fine car though and the new coupes do look great.

Saw someone back into another car

I think that's true of all big cities. If you park on the street be prepared for bumper rash. I wouldn't even bother owning a nice car if I was parking on city streets.

Saw someone back into another car

I saw the same happen, wrote the plate down, saw a cop and flagged him down and he took the information. The only thing I had to do was fax a statement to the insurance company of the "offender". The way I look at it is would I want to be out my $1k insurance deductible because somebody couldn't...

How do you Americans tell your money apart?

I don't know but that was pretty much me earlier this year in Montreal. With the exception of the dollar coins, which I wish we had in the US, everything else looked like play money. My guess is that the mind identifies coins by visual clues and not the diameter alone.

    Kadarin = certifiably nuts

Space grey is the best color on the E92 M3. Should've got saddle brown leather though :) I'd love to have an E92 335, can't imagine having a V8 M3. Oh well, guess I'll be happy with my '04 330i ZHP.

    Sun damage?

New cars have UV protection in the windows. You can use a product like 303 Aerospace Proctant if you want. It has UV protection in it.

    Thinking about getting a 2006 BMW 330i

I was in the same position and was pretty set on the E90 330i, it's an exceptional value. For $25k you get a 2-3yr. old car that probably stickered for over $40k new and still has some factory warranty remaining. That being said, I didn't notice a big difference in the way it drives versus an...

New Car Purchase - 2008 Prius

Actually the Fit does about the same MPG as the Civic. Its weight is within 100lbs. of the Civic. I got like 34mpg in mixed driving in a Chevy Cavalier rental I had a couple years ago (2.2L torquey motor too.) I think mid-30's is about the best you are going to do without going hybrid or diesel...

True? CNN says lower octane on high octane-recommended doesn't hurt mileage.

I'm not suggesting people with forced induction run 87, just pointing out that even in that extreme example the car will drive just fine. If you have a NA car running less than 11:1 compression it's a waste of money to buy premium. As the article points out it won't give you more power and I...

    What about the Nissan Sentra?

I had one as a rental for a weekend and hated it. I'd go for something else in this class or step up to an Altima.

New Car Purchase - 2008 Prius

Any new Honda should just require oil changes, filters, brakes and tires for the first 5-6 years. I would personally go with a Corolla if you do that much highway driving (smoother and quieter than the fit.)

True? CNN says lower octane on high octane-recommended doesn't hurt mileage.

I don't understand why people can't uderstand this, I guess the oil companies advertising is really working. I also don't know why manufacturer's recomend premium in anything other than forced induction and high compression engines. Car and Driver tested this several years ago and found out that...

2009 Honda Pilot - First drive

Any 4000lb.+ vehicle (4500lbs. in the '09 Pilot) is going to be hard pressed to get over 20mpg in anything but 100% highway driving. It's just basic physics.

    2003 Honda Accord Ex V6 for $10,888

Even as a non-salvage title it wouldn't have been a great deal unless you could get it for $1000+ off asking price. I just sold my 03 Accord EX-V6 coupe w/ 67k miles for that price.

    Fainting goats- evolutionary reason?

I'm sure mankind is responsible for breeding goats with this trait because of the novelty. Whereas in nature that breed probably wouldn't survive in the same numbers (if at all without human intervention.)

Broke glass of passenger window, and took Navi and Belltronics, in front of my apartment

I leave my Ipod in the center console while at work. But if somebody looks into my car they can't see anything. People will smash windows to get a couple bucks from the change tray.

The 5 and 7 series haven't grown on me, still think they look atrocious. The new 3 coupes look good but not the sedan.

Most reliable car you have owned?

My '03 V6 Accord which I owned for 3 1/2 years and just sold. Never had a single problem with the car. The only maintenance I did was oil and air filter changes, one set of tires and one set of brakes. I can only hope the '04 BMW 330 that replaces it will be anywhere close to that reliable...

Please help me pick a $7,500 car

Yes, you're probably going to be looking at an 02-03 Altima with $7500. I see you're in Chicago where the roads aren't great. The Altima's ride quality is half way between the Camry (soft) and Accord (firm.) As always, take it for a long test drive and have a mechanic look at it.

Please help me pick a $7,500 car

I agree with the suggestion for the Altima and Galant, both are good cars that can be had much cheaper than their competitors. The Impala can be had with a V6 for the same price as the 4-cylinder Japanese cars. Also, don't laugh at this one, a late model Chevy Cavalier is not bad for basic...

Gordon Murray's take on Honda's NSX

I agree, the NSX embarassed supercars of the day when it was introduced. It had similiar performance with a much nicer interior, refinement, reliability, comfort etc. But Honda basically sold the same car for 15 years with minor updates. The competition kept evolving while the NSX stayed the...

    i hung with a C4 Corvette today from 60-140

I had a '93 Prelude VTEC and the H22 engine is surpisingly strong at highway speeds. You can keep the revs on the "fast" cam and the car pulls hard. The euro spec motor does have 220HP and with intake, header and exhaust you could expect to get an additional 10HP. Even against an automatic LT1...

Is this Hitch too much? For my Toyota Camry?

If you're planning to install it yourself go for it. Otherwise you can probably have one welded on for about the same price as that one (including shipping). Just remember if you do it yourself you also have to do the wiring for the brake lights.

    C&D takes the 135i for a spin

The spread between it and the 0-60 time is pretty typical, driveline abuse pays off in 0-60 time. Having driven the 335i (twice) I can say you certainly don't feel any lag.
