fast network switching

Under TCP/IP for the given network adapter, take a look at the "Alternate Configuration" tab. This should allow you to specify IP info for when a DHCP server is not available.

What are you trying to accomplish here ? Is .100 another NAT device ? This type of setup could really cause a lot of problems. What type of load balancing are you trying to accomplish?

$5.99 DVD's at Wal-mart (apparently you should post your opinions of wal-mart in here as well)

Up here in Canada, I have yet to see a dirty or smelly WalMart. All the stores that I have gone to are relatively clean (I haven't seen a K-Mart here in years). I've bought the occasional DVD and was quite happy. One thing that I can complain about is that one of the stores near my home...

How do I set-up a dial-up server?

Um... I've never heard of PPP ever being able to be assigned two IP addresses. I have not seen PPP ever implemented where the user dialing in gets anything other than one IP (/32). Anyone aware of a reason why they could not be given a /30 or even a /28)? Will radius allow for a block of IP's...

Bry, What type of traffic are you running. How heavy is the utilization of the server at this time. Chances are that the upgrade to a switched 100 Mbps Full Duplex topology will solve all your speed problems.

Tony B, I'm working on a networking research project right now and I've been able to attain speeds of 96 Mbps using TCP and 98 using UDP :) Both boxes are Dell 677 with 3COM Nics (Running RH 7.1 - Patched to the 2.4.5 Kernel)

As I replied in the other thread, its unlikely that you will notice a big performance boost. Are you running switched 100BaseT or just using a HUB ? Going switched may make a very big difference (since not only do you get less collisions but also get full duplex)

Gigabit Over Copper

Any reason why you neeed the 1 Gigabit speeds ? I don't know if you realize how much data that really is? For any home applications, I don't believe that you will be able to stress even 100 Megabit Ether. To stream Mpeg 2 (playing a DVD remotely) all you need is about 70 Mbps.

Don't ignor layers 2 and 4. There seems to be a very big gap in the knowledge of many networkers in those layers. Cisco has a very good resource library for this type of stuff. If you want some really fascinating reads, check out this link ACM What you will find here is a great resource...
