sendmail or qmail? which one for a newbie to mail server?

If you have little experience with setting up an email server and are planning on using RedHat 8.0, sendmail is the obvious choice. RedHat does most of the work for you, as they have a default sendmail install that needs little tweaking. Qmail, on the other hand, isn't distributed with RedHat...

Windows 98 SE machines cannot find domain server - please help me out here.

Some "I think though am not a guru on Win2k networking" ideas: 1) Pretty sure you do not have to add Win9x machines to a domain, that's more for the NT/2k/XP 2) Old OSes login to Win2k domains with first part of the domain name. In your case you would configure Win98 to log into the...

Which? IDSL, IDSN, or DirectTV Satellite?

I agree with IDSL... Whatever you do, stay away from ISDN - it's tough to get hardware/support and you have to pay per-minute fees to the phone company. A few people I know racked up $500+ ISDN phone fees their first month in addition to their ISP fees. Admittedly this was a couple years ago...

    Win98 having problems with DHCP?

Two things to check 1 - Make sure the Win98 box is set to use DHCP 2 - Run winipcfg and check your network card's IP address If the address starts with 169, it is set to DHCP and cannot find the server. After that I would try hard-coding the IP address and see if you can ping the router....

<<< Terminal Services doesn't have to be expensive. (Now, be nice guys - This is a budgetary issue, not a "gotta spend $5K on a server). Can a Cisco Catalyst 2950 Switch do this?

Token apology for the ignorance on this one, but I have never touched a managed switch in my life. Cisco NAT modifying DNS queries?

One lingering issue is that all external DNS queries to outside IPs will timeout. This isn't an issue now, but if they did need to point an "A" record to an IP outside their network, the router seems to block it. This seems to contradict what the IOS NAT FAQ says. It should only translate DNS...

Can win2k server be a BDC to NT PDC?

First off Saltin and all, thanks for the help... Cannot be done. Exchange 2000 requires Active Directory. An NT PDC/BDC is not capable of hosting an Active Directory. Only a 2000 server can do this. Yet win2k running AD can emulate a PDC for NT4 servers to keep copies of user accounts/groups...
