Mounting plexiglass into side of case. How?

DO NOT drill a smaller hole. Plexi will crack. It cannot stand steady force. It will fan out from the drilled hole like spiderlegs... Drill a bigger hole and use a nut (and washer underneath). Peter

80mm fan on heatsink - safe?

80 mm fan is OK, specially if mounted asymetrically. Your temp readings are probably off, since the bigger fan blows more air under the socket cooling the temp sensor off. NorthBridge needs a fan, mainly if you are running 133FSB. If it is 100 you will probably can get by with a heatsink. Peter

Does running at fan at 7V reduce it to roughly 7/12 of it's CFM output? And is 18.7 CFM enough to cool a 1Ghz TBird?

Not so fast. 26dB is not loud, not the quietest but close. If you put and 80mm fan on the heatsink it will blow underneath you CPU socket and invalidate the temp readings. Just because you will see lower temp readings it might not be such... If you use 7V to run the fan: the voltage-CFM in NOT...

Intake fan filter?

I used the air-conditioning units filter, it is a soft foam, maybe 1/2 or 1/3 inch thick. You can easily cut it with scissors and even fold it into shape. Good luck and good thinking, Peter

Easy 80 mm fan mod for FOP32/38

One word of caution. Bigger fans have bigger motors, therefore the diameter of the center is bigger. Air under that motor is not moving. That is also the place where the actual CPU die touches the heatsink, and it is the warmest. I think an asymetric mounting of an 80mm fan should be more...

Cooling Issues

I have a Taisol CGK. I cannot hear it over the hardisks and the PS fan. I really really recommend it. You just have to scrape off the thermal pad it comes with (and was it off with nail polish remover). Use some good quality thermal paste (like Arctic Silver) and not too much of that either...

Which is better? 1 Ghz Tbird: 11*100 or 10*110>

Since you got MSI K7T Pro2-A I would say 8*133 (1066) would outperform both of those, and your PCI and AGP bus will not be out of specs. That is a great source for instabilities. You could also try 8.5*133 (1133) if you prefer (slight overclock, should be no sweat). Peter

CPU temperature rises with open case

Really well designed cases do help to lower the temps. But I do not mean PC cases, because those are not really designed well, not even with 10+ fans inside!!! I mean like SGI's machines, that specifically warn you not to run that without covers for that you will burn/damage the processor(s)...

About how many Watts would a 1.2GHz Athlon with 1.55V dissipate?

I was wondering how come you changed the voltage to 1.55V? The offical AMD spec sheet states that socket-A Athlons voltage is 1.75V. PDF from AMDs site check page 35 out of 92. It shows that a 1000MHz Atlon max dissipates 54W, and typical 49W andthe voltage is 1.75V. I guess you can cut the...

Jwyatt is correct. 3db is twice! dB = 20 log10 ratio. --> 20dB is 10x!!!!! Peter, MSEE :-) O)h, BTW 36dB --> 46dB, or 10dB diffrence -> Sqrt[10] ~ 3.xxx. Or in other words that darn Delta fan is 3 times louder than the other one!!!

Any recommendations for a t-bird fan?

I got Socket A Athlon 1GHz and KT7A-RAID. I used the stock cooler, and I got a Taisol CGK finally. It is much quiter (cannot hear it inside the case) and It works amazingly well: Stock max: 56-58C Taisol 50-51C max! Idle is about 28-30C room temp 25C. Do not get the Delta Fan with it!!!! 46dB...

In three words: heat is only generated when the transistors switch, meaning when the CPU is actullay doing something. Most of the CPU is the floating point unit(s), so unless you are really computing something the FPU part will not used -> No switching -> No Heat. Just try Sandra or Prime95...

That is an excellent idea. I should do it too. I guess you need soldering or you might want to just cut the wires and use a screw-on connector (I forget the proper term). Alternatively you can solder a fan connector in there and that way you can change the fan easily later if need arises. Also...

Your Opinion Wanted: Best Car for under $23,000 ?

I am suprised that no one mentioned Mitsubishi Eclipse. You can have a nice fully equipped 6cyl GT for that money. They rock and it is the best looking car out there. OK two door and practically no back seat, but it looks good and drives real nice. I had a Crown Vic before and I liked it too...
