That looks like a decent deal... But the "OneLink" dock for it only has a single HDMI I'm starting to lean towards a laptop that has DisplayPort. Then I could hook up my main monitor to that, and then the rest to a simple USB dock. It would be more cables, but still relatively easy...

Went to Microcenter today... Bad idea... :-) Went with a 4340 since it's eligible for a combo discount. I think I will be happier in the long run. So now that I have the 4600 IGP, should I bother with the discrete graphics (AMD 6450 passive)?

Celeron 887 to Kabini Athlon 5150 or 5350?

My main concern is being able to record/watch up to the 4 tuners I have available. That is where the Celeron fails right now. Will the g3220 handle that? It is considerably cheaper than the i3... I also have a low profile, passive, 6450 profile so graphics may not be an issue... I think...

I love off lease Lenovo ThinkPads for Linux. You can get them cheap, and they have good compatibliity. I'm using an X201 now and it takes everything I can throw at it. But I'm cheap.... :)

Advice for building first NAS

If you want to get by with lower ram requirements, you might consider open media vault. I was using FreeNAS, but find OMV much easier to administer and expand. http://www.openmediavault.org I'm running it with an Plex server plugin... then I can access all my media through much lower end...

Gimp pisses me off, is there something better?

Almost 2 years with Ubuntu 12.04. Ready to try something else.

Ross, Mint is a great distro. It is my daily driver. What chipset is your wireless? Broadcom chips are tough... back in the day, I replaced a broadcom wireless card with a realtek one. Made a world of difference and was cheap. Now I always try and get something with an Intel wireless...

Convert Antec 900 to server case... Which hot swap cages?

I'm not trying to just make it compatible... I could easily fit the drives in there... I really wanted to turn it in to a more "server-like" case. I could use adapter now and fit 8x3.5 drives in it easy... but then they wouldn't be hot-swap.

The 900 actually has 9 x 5.25 bays... but only 3 are set up for 5.25 drives.... The bottom 6 are where the 6 internal drives go..... I want to keep the top 5.25 bays for a DVD burner.... Then I want 8x3.5 1TB drives in the lower 6 bays.... 6 terabytes of space with dual redundancy... :)

Asus P5Q Pro ECC Memory?

I know this one is an oldie... I've re-purposed an Asus P5Q Pro with a Q6600 to serve as a freenas server. I'm using ZFS and wanted to bump up the memory. Right now it has 4GB which is really the bare minimum for a home ZFS server. As long as I'm at it, I would like to run ECC memory...
