6GB of ram is the new norm?

I ordered a Core i7 Dell last week and the options were 6, 8 or 12 GB. I initially stuck with 6 but later changed it to 8 thinking I would get 2 x 4GB with 1 slot empty for an easier upgrade later, but after completing the order I found out it was 4, 2, 2 instead. Oh well.

Having to deal with Dell customer "service" is enough to drive one to build their own!!! After a frustrating time on hold a couple times trying to change my RAM, I gave up (1.25 hour total). Went back to check status this afternoon and my order had disappeared completely, so I called again...

The options are: 6GB Tri-Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 6 DIMMs 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 6 DIMMs 12GB Tri-Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 6 DIMMs I presume that means 3 x 2 GB, 2 x 4 GB, or 3 x 4 GB? I guess this mobo will run with one slot empty. I'm thinking it...

Buying first Dell... i7 vs. Q9550

This machine had options for 8 and 12 GB of RAM...do you think that would mean a different mobo then? If so, I'll adjust the order up to 8 if it means there will be a 4th slot. (+$100) I've not been much of an overclocker in the past, so I'm not too concerned about the Dell's ability to do so.

I went ahead and ordered it, minus the TV card. I'll do some more research on those and add it later since it was just a whim for me at this point. Total cost is $1553 after tax & free shipping. I think I'll be happy! Thanks all for the opinions.

OK, it looks like I'll buy it! What do y'all think of the HVR1250 tuner card? That is the only option they offer...should I get it or find something different/better later? 8GB of RAM is $100 more, but I think 6 should hold me for quite a while.

My mistake above...it is with the Ultrasharp 2408WFP...I mixed up the letters. It is a $330 upgrade over their "standard" Consumer S2409W model. I've done some more reading since my post, and it sure looks like a winner. I see why it doesn't make a lot of sense to upgrade from a c2q or c2d...

Help me choose a comptuer desk

If you have a Sam's nearby checkout their big workstation setups if you have the room for the giganto-huge U-shaped sets. I bought one several years ago and it is a great value. Not real wood, but that doesn't matter to me b/c it is usually hidden by lots o' crap. ;) They are very functional...

Mine pops a little window up right above the System Tray and says Scanning XX Message or File or something like that. It is most noticeable with email for me...it scans outgoing and incoming messages and even caught another Mydoom message last night before I even saw it appear in the Inbox...

MS Word, trying to shade alternate cells in a table

I don't know how to quickly do it in Word, but you might try it in Excel, then paste the table into Word. Excel allows you to Paste Special . . . Format and you could use that to quickly build a blank table to start with. Good luck.

Win 98 System Resources

I just downloaded MemTurbo, which claims to recover all that lost ram, similar to a reboot. There are several options, and it displays a time-history graph of your memory resources, so you can watch them leak away. All you have to do is press a button, and voila, you get your memory back...

Recomend a monitor

I just picked up a 17" KDS Avitron from Sam's last month for $200. It has the true flat Trinitron (i.e. Sony) tube and looks great in my opinion. If you run Win98 or better, you can use your old 14" + a second video card and run both monitors at once and have much more desktop space...

OK, best I can tell with an inspection mirror and a flashlight is 1.02 (or maybe 1.05) . . . it is hard to tell since it is at the back of my case and there is very little clearance to aim the mirror and light! Where can I find the definitive info regarding the switches on the awdflash.exe...

Thanks for the suggestion regarding the fae file. I went that route because I wasn't sure which switches were required with the awdflash.exe program. I did indeed get the SS.exe/bin file from Abit's site, as I do not know where else to try. Should I try to find another version of the SS file...
