Sil 3112 SATA chipset problems

I tried to flash the firmware of the Sil 3112 but since this is on a PCMCIA card for my laptop, the computer doesn't recognize the card yet in DOS (with a boot disk). Does anyone know how to flash a PCMCIA card before going into Windows?

Sil 3112 SATA chipset problems

I just got a Buslink SATA Cardbus for my dell laptop. This SATA adapter uses the common Sil 3112 SATA chipset. I'm connecting a Bytecc SATA enclosure to this cardbus card. When I turn on the drive, Windows XP SP2 totally freezes for good. I've spent about 8 hours trying to find new drivers...

SATA vs USB 2.0

In IDE-to-SATA enclosures where the internal is an IDE drive and output is SATA, do those enclosures use some kind of chipset like Oxford 911 in the firewire conversion realm, or do those enclosures just use a simple IDE-to-SATA adapter? Or are they basically the same thing? I'm worried about...

I had the ME-720F firewire enclosure and it was slow as h e l l. I would like at least 30-35MB/s sustained for video editing. I've read many firewire benchmarks and they just cannot get up any higher than 20 MB/s average. There aren't many reviews or setups that I could find about connecting...

USB mouse freezes when flash drive inserted

using 400MHz DDR ram in 533 FSB

Got one of those Dell 400SC servers with a P4 2.26 533 FSB but the ram is ECC 400MHz DDR. However, by default, in bios, the ram is set to be running at 333MHz. Can a 533 FSB handle ram running at true 400MHz? If not, I just plan to keep the ram at 333MHz, and buy additional ram that's NON-ECC...

2 partitions for DV editing

This is one big 200GB just for editing. So it only has AVI files, project files, sound files, graphic files. There's no other work for this drive nor an OS. So I take it one whole partition is best. Thanks a lot Confused. ;)

Would creating 2 partitions actually decrease performance then? I mean, the other partition would be located at a different place on the drive than the first partition. So if the read-head is trying to read from one partition at one location and trying to read simultaneously from the other...

I just got a 200GB drive for DV editing and I split it up into 2 partitions. I did this because I read somewhere that for DV editing (for Adobe Premiere), you should have 1 drive for storing captured AVIs and 1 drive for the preview files so exporting can read from 2 separate drives...

Is it possible to use a laptop's screen as a monitor for a desktop? I have a Compaq 900Z and there's a VGA out, but there's no VGA in. Are most laptops designed NOT to have VGA in?

USB2 would have the same problem. The bottleneck is at the PCMCIA controller, no what you stick in the pcmcia slot, the TI controller will limit the speed.

Nono, sorry for any confusion, but I'm not talking about or using the internal laptop drive. I'm saying the problem is the pcmcia controller by TI, which is the slot that connects a firewire card which connects to the my 7200rpm external harddrive.

Is there such a thing as a 3.5" hdd to 2.5" hdd adapter where the adapter is like a cable that connects the 3.5" hdd to the 44-pin input in the notebook? I've searched the web and only have found the vice versa which is putting 2.5" drive in a desktop. I know the 3.5" won't fit in my laptop...

I found the problem. It's the PCMCIA controller's problem: the TI PCI-1410 pcmcia controller. I finally found a post on the web where some guy had the same TI chipset in his laptop pcmcia controller. There was a temporary fix by TI and I tried it but it didn't work. I can't find a final solution...

I had a fellow Anandtech user do some benchmarks with this oxford 911 based enclosure and he gave me some results here. And average was 11MB/s and peak was 15MB/s.
