Opinions on AMD FX-9590 220W?

If you have a microcenter nearby they have a 4770k and mobo bundle with the as rock z87 extreme 4 for cheaper than the 9590 alone would cost you and once overclocked it'll be faster in most situations without the crazy power draw or heat. Sell the mobo and get a good sealed liquid cooler like...

Anyone else still running Core 2?

Apple's '949 multitouch patent tentatively declared invalid by USPTO

This doesn't mean all that much though, a lot of the time companies whose patents are invalidated are allowed to make changes to the wording that would again make the patents valid, so these tentative declarations don't mean much.

Upgrading an old 775

Unless you get the old intel CPUs for essentially free it makes no sense to perform any of these upgrades. I'd just wait for one of those $100 or less AMD combos to roll around if you don't mind not being on the cutting edge or just save up and get a 3570K combo if you have a microcenter...

AMD Pays GF to get out of wafer commitment

My best guess is that they're trying to avoid having to dump the CPUs super cheaply because that would dilute what value they have left in their chips-if people get too used to paying $30 for AMD cpus they won't be able to charge more when they want to later on. Still....this is a very costly...

As for the actual competition maybe we should split it up a little since the fastest system at one benchmark (i.e. cinebench) might not be the fastest in another. Cinebench is obviously always going to be won by a 6 core sandy over a highly clocked ivy or something.

What kind of cooling do you have? Maybe you're being too aggressive on the voltage and overloading your cooling solution. But ivy really is pretty terrible in terms of clocks.

Any reason to wait 6+ months for upgrade?

Your boot speed has virtually nothing to do with your CPU so I have no idea why you think you boot faster with a 3770K. If anything it's probably the clean install of windows. Even on an SSD it'll be ever so slightly faster at booting. OP, I'd probably just make sure your CPU's OC'ed to it's...

My project to cool a 3770k is now complete. (big trouble resolved)

He has AVX turned on in Linpack so the scores are much higher, all the highly clocked Sandy/Ivy chips can push 100+ Gflops in Linpack with AVX on.

Rumor: AMD "Piledriver" FX CPU production to begin Q3 2012

But it doesn't really hurt to leave it turned on in most situations since you're very unlikely to be CPU bound with a highly clocked Sandy or Ivy chip. In the linked benchmarks even the minimum frame rate was over 60FPS at all times and it's not even clear that the minimum was even CPU related...

Intel i5 2500k or Intel i7 2600k for Gaming?

Unless you can pick the 2600K up for $199 at microcenter I'd go with the 2500K. If you have a microcenter nearby though I would probably just get the 2600K. I'm actually debating whether to upgrade my 2500K for a 2600K since microcenter is a 30 minute drive for me.

Just going to call this right now

Even when it wins it's losing because the 2500K is an unlocked enthusiast chip that's shipped stock at 3.3Ghz but meant for overclocking-we're talking about a chip that easily overclocks to 4.5Ghz+ at stock voltages. You can overclock bulldozer as well but the power requirements skyrocket along...

It's a sad day for AMD when...

The problem is that the extra money you'd have to spend on a PSU to power an overclocked FX kills this solution entirely since you'd be able to simply buy a better intel CPU than an i3 if you're gonna put the money into a high power PSU to feed an FX overclock.

i5-2500k at 5Ghz.. wow..

I can get my 2500K to be 5Ghz stable under both prime and intelburntest but it requires shoving 1.5V into the thing to really keep it stable. Pretty pointless since there's no real world difference between 4.6Ghz and 5Ghz lol.

Good LGA 775 board that's still available?

The Asus P5K series was pretty decent as well as long as your boss doesn't have too many USB devices. I would personally avoid non-intel chipsets. The P5Q successor is also nice, though to be honest I'd just buy whatever I could find for cheap. Maybe from the for sale forum or something...
