See if your antivirus software REALLY works

OK, I'm gonna make this recommendation again: NOD32 Caught 3 little trojans that AVG free missed. You can get a 2 year subscription at 50% off the second year. NOD32 is light and fast. KAV is much heavier, and defintiely much slower. If you like KAV, you'll love NOD32.

? There's links all over the damn place. Look for my posts and the posts of tazdevil, of 06/16/2004 and 06/18/2004, for starters.

The file is months old and pretty redundant by now. There is plently of info and some good links in the thread. Go by them instead.

See if your antivirus software REALLY works

Why be so difficult? There is no consensus. There is no "best". Get off your butt, install some trial versions and see for yourself. My personal take? As I stated above, Kaspersky for all-around detection of the most viruses, trojans, worms, etc. Downside? High system resource usage. For...

See if your antivirus software REALLY works

Socio, try Panda, but it seriously messed up my Internet access. I had to reformat. I'm doing trials of NOD32 and Avast (free version). I really like NOD32 for being light on resources. Avast free is annoying in that infected emails are not dealt with automatically. It always prompts you...

Why does everyone want to test their AV against what is now an old collection of viruses and trojans? A few good AV resources that should give you a better picture: http://www.wilders.org/ http://www.wilderssecurity.com/ http://www.av-comparatives.org/ http://www.virusbtn.com/

Why don't you use Mozilla Firebird?

I use Firebird exclusively now. I haven't visited a Firebird unfriendly site in a long time. It loads quickly for me, even with IE still installed. It really is fantastic. I like Opera, but it seemed to render more incorrect pages than Firebird.

    Looking for Good Fax Software

Sorry to hear that. My version of 6.0 has been working fine for many months. I've found their CS to be pretty good, if not exceptionally fast. You may wait a day or two, but you'll get a thoughtful answer.

    Looking for Good Fax Software

You found it. FaxTalk is the ONLY thing I found that works. I don't even have distinctive ring from my phone company. FaxTalk picks up, playes my pre-recorded greeting, and switches to fax if it detects one. I tried about five other packages you can find demos for on the web. FaxTalk is the...

    Best email spam cleaner?

I used Cloudmark Spamnet last year when it was still free. Easily the best, but now carries a subscription fee. Next, I tried POPfile. That's not so user-friendly. There is a Outlook front end called "Outclass" (or something) that makes it easier to integrate with Outlook, but still. I now...

    Backup software

I need a two-part backup solution. I have one file to back up. First, every weeknight, I want to back it up to CDR, burning the file into a new directory or filename (name based on the date) each time. Second, I'd like the file FTP'ed off-site every week. Does anyone have any suggestions for...

Halo for PC released in three days...

Exactly - you're a fragger. Nothing wrong with that. Fragging skill can be countered in BF with the ability to hide and wait in the right spot. And you're right, planes rule some maps. But AA's pretty lethal, too.

Halo for PC released in three days...

Hmm, it's not your rig, either then. Must be you. (j/k) But really, BF is not a fragger's delight. No aliens with dozens of tentacles popping out of closets, no super kill-all weapon, and little close-quarters combat. If it's not your thing, it's not your thing. But that doesn't mean it sucks.

    i810 memory compatibility

Helping a neighbour upgrade his older Compaq with i810 (maybe i810e) chipset. Currently has 2x64MB DIMMs in both slots. We want to add 256MB. Single-sided 256MB SDRAM sticks are less-expensive than double-sided sticks, but are they compatible with the i810(e)? Been searchine everywhere...

SMC vs Netgear router (please help)

Never touched the SMC, but I've had both the RP114 and now the RP614. I've never had a problem with Netgear stuff. The RP614 has a few more features than the older 114. One of my favourites is labelling the port forwards so you don't have to remember which port maps to which app.

AMD Hosed me, What should I do?

Let's not get too picky here. You've got AS - scrape off the TIM with a razor blade, clean it as best you can, or even use some wet/dry sandpaper mounted on a flat surface to lap the heatsink if you want. Either way, you'll be fine.

    Infamous lies in history

The two that come to mind immediately: "I am not a crook." "Peace in our time!" Though really, the second one wasn't as much a lie as gross naivety.

    Recommend a quiet cd burner?

My last 2 LG burners (15X and 52X) and readers (52X) have been as quiet as my 40X Plextor reader. The 52X burner is very capable - just make sure you update the firmware.

Run, don't walk, to a credit counselling service or seminar. Municipalities sometimes run free ones. Move your CC debt to a bank loan for a better interest rate. Cut up the CC, or have your limit lowered. Return or sell any high-priced gadget you recently bought that hasn't depreciated much...

Seems pretty obvious that they'll just keep the Linksys line going, as Linksys has a large home and SOHO user base.

Need to find Plextor PX-40TSi SCSI CDROM

Just took a quick look around, and didn't find one at any of my favourite suppliers. You can still get a SCSI Pleaxtor CDRW, or find a used one. I have the Wide version, but that apparently won't help you.

I've found the LG drives to be among the quietest. Despite reports to the contrary, my Pioneer slot-load DVD ROM is also reasonably quiet, and is among the fastest for providing you access to the disc just inserted.

Ok I need you to review and tear apart my resume...

Needs work, but it's a good start. Initial thoughts: Overuse of "Responsible for...", add some other action words, elaborate on key points. Completely rewrite Objective - had to serch for your major, and it's too generic anyway. There are usually resume workshops or help centres in...

    Intermittent mouse problem w/ A7V

I was just searching the forums to see if I was the only one. My MS Intellimouse Optical sometimes just powers down and the light goes off. Everything else is fine. Sometimes tapping the mouse seems to work, but I don't think so. Here's what I've found. The problem is worse the more I...

Does DELL still make the most upgradable OEM systems?

Did they ever? I recall oddball power connectors, single fans for PS and CPU complete with shroud, and other anomalies, though I've only poked around a few Dells.

    CNN Disgusts Me!

You don't allow CNN on your TV? I take a similar stand with my dog and the leather couch, but at least I'm justified. And Fox News? *shudder* If you want a less biased approach to world news, watch the CBC, or better yet, the BBC. Craig

    Power tool recommendations

Oh, for voltage rating, a good quality 12V is better than a cheap 14.4V tool. It'll be lighter for overhead work, too. If you want to keep a battery-powered tool a while, check to see if the battery packs are assembled with glue or if they're screwed together. There'll just be standard-sized...

    Power tool recommendations

DeWalt is the high-end of the Black and Decker line (same company). B&D is OK for occasional use. I prefer Porter Cable stuff, but it's closer in price and quality to DeWalt than B&D. Makita makes good stuff too. Pretty much, you get what you pay for. There is no such thing as a free lunch...

Inexpensive dual monitor video cards with DVI???

I originally bought a Radeon VE to handle DVI for an LCD and VGA for a CRT. Problem was, you could only span multiple monitors at the same resolution (as pointed out) and even then, a maximized window now spanned both monitors. I eventually just got a PCI G200 for the CRT, and now a Millenium...

    Hub or router?

3 NICs, crossover cable, Win98SE or higher with ICS installed on one machine only. Crossover cables look like typical CAT5 patch cables, but they are wired differently. Many stores now have them. DSL/Cable > NIC1 on PC1 with ICS installed NIC2 on PC1 > PC2 Search for "Internet Connection...
