You should ALWAYS connect a scsi device to the last connector on the cable.
If your harddrive is not a LVD you should look at a jumper that says TERMINATION and the termination should be OFF because the LVD cable has termination enabled.
You should also configure the bios off the Adaptec...

The proper thing to do is leave the disks connected that is c:\ master and d:\ slave and e:\ cd-rom. There is no need to use fdisk or "maxblaster" on d:\ you just have to delete al the files on it or quickformat the drive !
Get a copy of Powerquest bootmagic 6 or other boootmanager...

Yamaha is the one that you DON'T want to buy : it is not burnproof and is not a true 16 speed !
Plextor is the other one that you don't want to buy : it is burnproof and burn's at 16 speed but it can't write in RAW mode and does not support 90 minutes cd's

Don't buy the Yamaha : This drive really sucks : the new 16 speed won't even
burn on 16 speed but only at 12-speed. DAE is also really bad !
And it does not support RAW writing, neither does the Plextor.
The only good one is Waitec T-Rex 16/10/40 : it eaven writes 90 minutes cd's
