I have up to 60-80GB of archive stuff to process every week.
To go through that lot with an IDE drive is a nono as i would waste so much time it would not be funny.
Yes it is worth it.
To wade through that lot with any IDE setup would cost me a lot of time i dont have.
demoted IDE :P
When i try to unrar upwards of 50 rar files of an archive from one HD to a folder on same HD plus burn CD off .bin file off same HD and also drag an archive off network storage to same HD IDE is a system crippler :(
Now with my SCSI drives i can just carry on with no system bog...
FWIW my dad's puter uses up to 460ish MB when he plays FS2002 on XP.
Im thinking when he cranks it up to 100% everything with the next GFX card upgrade im going to have to get him another 256MB or its going to start to chug on the HD :(
There are games already that'll stretch 512MB so it cannot...
Im pimping the NEC 1850X :D
Oh yeah, theres a thread on Ars :D that tells you all about this fine TFT but i wont linky as i dont want to rub Anand forums nose in it ;)
Did i tell you theres some good forum content on Ars :P
Hehe, guess where ive been lurking where i dont have to double click and...
Ive got a Promise Ultra 100 TX2 controller card on my Supermicro 370 DLE on a 64 bit PCI slot.
I was wondering if there was any benefit in running this card at 66mhz PCI as my mobo will allow me to do this and the card supposedly supports it.
Is this 66mhz ability just a marketing gimmick?
Just...
My Seagate 36ES2's are as quiet as the Barracuda IV with only the seeks being about as audible as a Maxtor D740X with accoustic management on :)
Now even SCSI can be quiet too.
One observation i have noticed is that while my Western Digital SE may be fast in benches the real world performance...
Hehe, maybe i better explain myself a bit better, sorry :embarassed;
I never actually used the 3Ware card in raid0 as the 3Ware card had the ability to do raid1 with raid0 read performance with only write performance being comparable to a single drive - very impressed :)
Only problem i found was...
Promise - Ugh, ive just had bad performance experience with their Fastrak 100.
Dont care how good theyre newer stuff is i wont be using them again.
I used to have a 3Ware 6400 and am still kicking myself for selling it :(
If you want IDE raid i would not look anywhere else but 3Ware FWIW.
You...
I have a drive with Smart Burn and when i try to burn a damaged .bin file with CDRWin it still BSOD's WinXP.
I can repeat this on several systems so reckon it must be a bug with CDRWin.
From this experience i would presume Smart Burn will not help reduce BSOD's FWIW.
Im not too impressed until someone finds out whether the parhelia supports "overlay" on all the attached monitors.
Im wary of the parhelia as this is a big deal and seeing as Matrox arent beating the drums about this am assuming it will be just like other cards - useless.
If anyone has any...

Just ignore the registry mullarky at the top and do the bottom route.
I just shutdown my rig, rip bits out, pop new bits in - boot off XP CD, ignore first repair prompt and continue as if doing a clean install.
When you get to just before the...
stephpar - im afraid ive not had chance to see the samsungs in the flesh but from what ive heard ;) from their owners they seem to be happy.
badxcow - You could always do what i do ;) - Here in the UK it is LAW that any online retailer HAS to give a full refund to you if you return the goods...
As long as your vid card has working drivers you should be able to do what you require.
Just dont extend the desktop via the display properties options for the second monitor.
Instead just increase the screen size for "Monitor 1" to the max and when its gone past the max res of your first...
I would like a card that has zero issues and drivers that are perfect - guess this is too much to ask i guess :(
If the matrox card turns out to be an unrushed solid product it may well go on my shopping list after everyone's tested it out for me :D
Im wary of the other manufacturers rushing to...
Theyre great for gaming.
Theres no ghosting at all on the two models ive mentioned.
I play Quake 3 a lot so wouldnt be happy unless i felt it was acceptable.
The only thing you do notice is a kind of slight motion blur when you move really fast, though it is only very slight and you would not...
If your looking for a 15" LCD my recommendation would be for either the Eizo L365 or the NEC 1550M.
I have used both these models and they put other cheaper LCD's in the shade when i go perusing round my local PC shops.
Another one to look out for is the Compaq one with 20ms pixel refresh.
I...
I just saw the linky over on HOCP for the Viewsonics cross between a Thin Client and Tablet PC.
Yummy :))
My lust for this device is going to have to be fulfilled so would be grateful if anyone could pop me a linky for where i can get pricing and order one from :)
Linky
Its been a long time...
Looks like Nvidia had good intentions with nView but none of the manufacturers are doing the low end models with twin DVI x 2 or DVI + extra HD15output.
Ive been looking at all the new cards as their pictures have appeared over at Digit-Life and all the 4200 and 4400 variants have only the one...
Ive been looking to upgrade my Elsa GF2MX PCI dual HD15 output with a Geforce 4200 AGP dual head but cannot find anyone offering a solution based on this card yet.
All the cards i see are single head or the 4600 which is overkill for my use and wallet.
If anyone knows of a GF4 4200 with the...
I would also avoid the Hercules as it only has a single RAMDAC for the model with both DVI and HD15 connectors.
Even though it has the two connectors it cannot drive two monitors!
It can only do dual head with a TV! :/
If the 2D on my previous Hercules cards - GF2MX and GF2Ti are anything to go...
Hi,
I currently use a Maxtor Atlas III SCSI HD as my secondary app drive for my server which is great for performance.
Problem is a single IDE HD really bottlenecks the IO's on this system due to IDE's poor ability to handle data queing compared to SCSI :(
Problem is i really need a totally...
<< It's coming up on new hard drive time, and I'd like to get a pair of really fast drives >>
Fast 7200rpm drive recommendations - Maxtor D740X or WD 8mb SE's.
Raid card - On the cheap - Highpoint. Not so cheap - 3Ware 7xxx series.
FWIW speed is only half the story with IDE HD's whatever you...
Sounds like an external solution would suit you best.
With both USB2 and Firewire supporting hotplugging would be ideal for your needs.
One thing to bear in mind is that its ok to backup your data, but you would still lose all the data if your house gets burgled and you loose the lot :(
At...
I have troubles with the latest XP drivers also with FSAA and FS2002.
The bottom third of the screen flashes a mottled pink pattern which makes the instruments hard to read and looks awful.
This on both a Geforce 2 Ti200 and a GF2MX 400 :/ Each on completely different platforms.
Might be worth you waiting to see what Hitachi have in store if your not in a hurry.
Recently theyve signed up to a deal with PowerVR for their MBX tech which should be interesting.
I saw a few piccys of the games PowerVR were demoing with the MBX platform and they were superb.
They said at the...
NFS4 - It maybe worth considering getting a U160 controller in the future.
My Atlas III sustains well below U2W but peaks are off the scale so you are probably limiting the peak performance with your U2W controller.
I may be talking complete twoddle though ;)
Im sure someone will put me right if...
<< I wonder how it compares to a geforce3 in terms of opengl application (not games) performance >>
You do realise this card is being aimed at the average joe consumer and not professional app users, yeah?
If this card has ~10% Ti4200 performance with good 2D and multi display support + half...
Looking at your current rig (P3 1gig + GF2 GTS) i would be inclined to forget the processor upgrade and maybe look at doing your graphics card first.
If your a gamer you would probably get more gratification from spending on a GF4 maybe?
Ive seen some pretty lowly specced CPU rigs with fast...
Ive got a pair of P3 667's that im going to be popping in my server and really want go passive cooling this time.
The P3 667's pop out ~17watts of heat which im hoping i can passively cool under full load 24/7 but am unsure what temps i should be aiming for with longevity in mind.
If anyone has...
Thanx n0cmonkey :)
Im sure i'll be back soon either with a big smilie or my tail between my legs ;)
EON are changing their service in October so i'll just make the most of it while it lasts. Like you say, this kind of multicasting requested qued data cant last for too long at ?54 till October...
Ive found that i need RG6 coax cable with F type connectors which is cool - should be easy enough to get rigged up :)
Im really looking forward to playing with my new toy :D
Ive just about finished putting together my cache server so i can keep a cache of all the pushed multicast downloads which...
Thanx for the info on the cable as i wasnt sure as to which i would need.
Also i was wondering what kind of connectors will i need?
No gaming for this setup as its just for file fetching ;) :D and browsing.
Ive been reading about this multicasting file sharing that runs @ up to 2Mbps! :cool...
Im currently embarking on having a play around with satellite internet access and have ordered a Europe Online pack with the Skystar 2 PCI card and 3 months subscription.
Ive also ordered a 60cm satellite dish and the required LMB but am a bit unsure what kind of cable/connectors i will need to...
