Ah ok, what I meant was that it wasn't available in the default "protocol" menu as it is in Win9x and Win2k. I'll look into that!

PocketPC uses TCP/IP and is able to browse the files on my w2k laptop fine. NetBEUI isn't availabe in WinXP it semms!!!!!

Yep, no firewall on the XP machine. It's 802.11b. And mapping via the IP works ok, it's just that the PocketPC doesn't support that :-(

Just swapped mine at Walgreens and the new one kicks ass! It's a 49mhz vs the previous 35mhz, but I don't see why that would make a difference. My father is still pretty appalled ;-)

That's quite possible especially since we're using the same mobo (Albatron). Not sure if I would call it hitting the wall though since only Prim95 generates errors, after a while and never crashes completely.

Thanks for checking. The P4 definitely behaves differently than the old Deschutes that would crash big time in Prime95 when pushed too hard. It's hard to get the P4 stable in Prime95 though. Last I tried 2.8ghz at pretty much defautl voltage seemed to work. I'll try a Tmpeg encoding at 3.06 to...

These temps seem pretty reasonable. I'm surprised there isn't more of a difference between full and idle though. Are you using the stock fan?

yes, but lI need to see what the result looks like, I suppose that the errors shown in Prim95 must pop up somewhere in Rempeg, it's just that it doesn't stop!

How stable is it though. The 2.4b will boot at 3.2 but craps ot pretty quickly in Prime95, regardless of the voltage

A brief update. Hard to get it totally stable above 2.8ghz regardless of the volage. At 2.9ghzm it will run Prime95 for 10+ hours and then halt. Unlike previous generations, though the computer doesn't lock up, Prime95 just generates an error and stops. Maybe it's the Albatron crapping out at...

Thanks for the info, makes sense. It seems the Barracuda IV is up to 80gb and then the V picks up. Is it the V you've got? The 80gb IV is around $100 while the 120gb V is around $165 so it seems it might be more advanced (higher cost per gig). That Nexus Vantec looks pretty cool for $37...

So 7,200rpm makes a big difference? I'll lookup that Seagate drive you mention. I guess I like having a small "system" drive where (one or several) OS's reside and then have other drives for Video or mp3's. I might go the "monlie rack" way too but that's not incompatible with a the Promise card.

Duh...the P4 needs that extra power plug... Humming along at 2.9ghz/1.7 (actual is 1.6+) totally stable with Prime 95 (that's still THE stability test it seems) Boots up to 3.1ghz but not stable in Prime95. Mo crashing like with previous CPUs but P95 just stops. Maybe some burning in will help...

feeling a bity lonely here I'm now up and running (plugging in theP4 power cable helped)! I'm now humming along at 3ghz...Pretty bewildering! Thinking of beefing up my system with a few HDs. I'm set on the 5,400rpms though to keep the noise down. Are ther "quiet" 7,200 drives? I miss the 4 IDE...

well I picked all the pieces I needed (Albatron, 2.4 C1, DDR, Video Card) but unfortunately I can't get the system to post :-( Not sure where the faulty component is...or if several are...well have to check that out at the shop tomorrow on their test bench. I swear I didn't try to overclock ;-)

Hum...decisions, decisions, it seems I could get a system from Dell with a P4 2.4b/256mb/G2MX440 for $629...with the added benefit of not having to pull apart my trusty BP6. Overclocking is probably not an option though, but the cost is pretty good. Any big drawbacks at getting such a system...

Yes the 2.4b is looking better all the time. I was going to go with some Viking PC2700. I don't remember how the 2700 related to FSB, do you just multiply by 8? It seems you can't leave the RAM alone when overclocking like on the Via chipsets for AMD right?

Recording VHS in and burning to DVD???

The Dazzle is a good solution for VHS conversion of exisitng tapes, but probably not for DV because it lacks a firewire port and its easier to edit a DV source than an mpeg2 source
