xp just keeps rebooting

I think I've got an lsass.exec and/or services.exe virus. Machine just keeps rebooting in both normal and safe mode before the log on screen xpsp2. TrendMicro was installed and up to date.... Is there a downloadable boot virus scan that can get me into the system to do a cleanup etc.??

Can't view ME hard drive in XP

Did you set the jumpers correctly for the position of the drive. Sometimes, you may have to reboot xp, even after it has found the drive on initial boot.

USB 2.0 vs IDE for Data Transfer

Removing hadrives from laptops seems sort of cumbersome if you have to do it on a regular basis. Depending on the brand of laptop you may be able to make use of a 2nd hard drive adapter bay. Thinkpads have these and you can hot swap them just like a floppy. A few other models have them too...

Using someone's else installation disk w/ my own CD-key.

As I mentiond previously, your key should work with another oem xp home i386 folder. 1 You can try using his complete disk with his key to get it installed. Once installed, you will have to change the PID. You can search for that on the Microsoft Knowledge base. They allow it and you will...

Proprietary software crap

As mentioned before, if you can get a copy of a full i386 oem home folder, you can use your oem home key. It's legal and you will have to activate. You could also clean out the original hp progs from the registry with a prog like regcleaner and end up pretty clean.

Using someone's else installation disk w/ my own CD-key.

Your key will only work with an oem cd, and not necessarily any oem cd. It must have the full i386 home oem folder. Some xp disks shipped with systems have tailored files and will not work with another brand oem key.

Should I get an all-in-wonder card?

You can also connect your vhs player to the analog in of a minidv camcorder and it will hardware decode and you can transfer that to your pc in avi format (which is normal minidv) via firewire. I have used AIW cards for at least the last 6 years and still have an original RadeonAIW with 32mb...

80gig 2.5" hdd for $37 + shipping and tax?

Last week I ordered the identical 80gig travelstar from zipzoomfly for $112.00 including shipping and got it in four days. A lot better price than $522.00 from IBM and not bad compared to the $53.00 price of the IBM mistake. I'm happy and no matter what I still swear by their Thinkpads.

The misery of spontaneous rebooting

I assme you used air from an air compressor in the garage. They are notorious for blowing condensation with the air. Could you have gotten anything wet enough?

80gig 2.5" hdd for $37 + shipping and tax?

I bought a couple of the 5k100 (5400) 80gig drives a few month's ago and have noticed a dramatic improvement over the 4200. At the time, I read several tests that reported that other than at boot, the 7200rpm drive showed little if any speed difference in real time use over the 5400.

Fortuneatly, I never used those drives, but to show how times have changed, the Travelstar has been and still is considered probably the best laptop drive. Seagate of late has had a big push to dislodge them.

Laptop hard drive enclosure?

Be carefull of using a usb powered external enclosure on your laptops. They have been known to fry the usb port which requires a mb replacement on laptops; expensive. Depending on your situations you may be able to use an externally powered one or even mobile trays if using desktops only...

You can copy the i386 folder from a cd to the laptop over the network and then install from that folder. Google for the instructions.

Sorry, but the joys of doing your own troubleshooting is having the parts/equipment to do it. Borrow one if possible. Can't do too much if you can't post. You can try default cmos settings, but your symptoms don't point to this.

I need help with two things in Win XP

Sounds like you might need to update all your firmware/drivers/bios. Even though it is new, there could be several updates already. Make sure you installed the proper hdrive controller drivers from the supplied cd. I always disable hibernation, so....

200GB+ hard drives in raid 1 mirror

Go with the waranty. First choice Seagate, 2nd WD Have had many that are 4yrs plus old. All venders have had some bad runs, but above seem to be the least. Besides they are cheap these days.

OS Question...

If your existing copy is not legit and you have a legit win xp oem cd (such as one bought with hardware), it will install over the illegit copy and give you 30 days for activation. I can't remember step by step but I do remember you have to go further into the instalation and ignore some warnings.

It is not mandatory that it be used. Check the manual. Also depending on the hs you want to use, you may be able to cut etc some of the fins to clear it if necessary.

Defragmentation question.

That is the biggest reason. Be aware also, that the full version, if you use boot time defrag, will defrag and move the pagefile and mft, if necessary, which the xp version does not. This can result in quite a difference as well.
