Uninterruptible Power Supply & Surge Protection

You may not see "power conditioning" listed in a UPS spec. I commonly see it referred to as "AVR" (Automatic Voltage Regulation.) AVR is the same thing as "power conditioning" or "line conditioning".

What kind of slot is this in my laptop?

I have never heard of any laptop with the CPU being upgradable, or for that matter removable. I have been inside about 15 and with all of them the CPU was surface-mounted (soldered) to the motherboard.

What to put in xorg.conf to get my Samsung TV to work?

copying a hd...why is it so slow?

Merk: If you are trying to copy a partition that includes the operating system, just copying files will not work. I would suggest Ghost, Acronis True Image, or possibly Clone-Maxx. If you are trying to copy the whole hard drive Clone-Maxx will do it. Clone -Maxx is free and can be downloaded...

AMD laptop.......really less stable?

I have a Compaq V3010us which is the same system but came stock with 512mb RAM and 100gb hard drive. I have upgraded to 2gb RAM. I have not had any problem with mine running XP. Cosmetically I do not like it. I bought it primarily for the components/price ratio. Four weeks ago I got it for $779...

Fedora Core 6 is scheduled for release EDIT: pushed back to Oct 24th.

Upgrading computer with linux

Try it and see. Just turn on the system and let it boot up. Kudzu is one of the earlier services to start. That will detect the new hardware, ask you if you want to delete support for the old hardware and ask if you want to install support for the new hardware. It has worked 2 out of 3 times...

my ms mouse is junk

Just get a new one. For over three months now my local Office Depot has had the "MS Basic Optical Mouse" (USB and a wheel) for $12.95 or less. It works great (I have bought a total of six of them for work and home.)

Trouble installing W2K PRO on ECS K7VTA3

I recently got a ECS K7VTA3 version 6 with a Sempron 2600+ (Fry's special $89.95 combo deal.) Windows 2000 Prof installed fine and it works great. I am using it now to write this message. I am not running any RAID configuration, though.

What would you rather do first? Add memory or faster hard drive to 400sc?

If removing the dying hard drives does not work, try removing service pack 2. Many people have had problems with service pack 2 slowing down things (myself included.) As soon as I uninstalled service pack 2 it spead up again

I am not sure what supplier you are using, but for under $70 you can get the NEC 2510A (dual layer vice single layer) and for $29 get Ritek Ridata 8X DVD-R 50 pack spindle at newegg.

Best linux distro for a newbie that's not Lindows

The vesa video card driver works with almost all video cards. I am using it right now on this laptop (HP ze4540us) and it works great. It would greatly help if you told us the exact model network card you are using.

Imaging old 9GB HDD to new 40GB: Ghost of Maxtor DriveMax software?

As you are setting up the Disk to Disk copy, Ghost also allows you setup to expand the partition size from the original size (this case 9gig) to the full size of the new drive (this case 40gig) without loss of data.

Can all CDROM drives read 800 MB CDS?

I know TV-out...but Audio Out???

Looking at the manual for your motherboard, the TV-Out bracket is strictly for video. The S-bracket (SPDIF is for audio) instructions for configuring it begin on page A-5. On page A-10, connectors designated as 4 or 5 (on the S-bracket) would be how you connect it to a dolby 5.1 receiver.
