Win 7 + new Sandy Bridge rig = broken DVD drive

Looks like a firmware update for the drive may have fixed this - I'm testing it now, and so far everything looks good. If I see any more issues with it, I'll post them here. Nathan

Dual-core Atom + ATI 5570 = good enough for HTPC use?

Can't get scroll wheel to work in XP Pro

Sure have. They look right, and changing them seems to have no effect - still can't scroll using the wheel. I've also tried using a USB --> PS2 adapter to see if that would change anything, but it hasn't. I know the wheel on this thing works, though - I've used it on other machines. Nathan

Best (and biggest) LCD sub $300

Best (and biggest) LCD sub $300

I got 2 of these right after Thanksgiving, for $200 each: Samsung SyncMaster 2343BWX. They're back up to $220, but I still don't think that's a bad price. I love the high resolution, and the color seems pretty good, too - better than the HP W2007 that they replaced, at least :) Nathan

Want to use headphones, but TV only has optical output

Turns out I had the base for the headphones (they're RF wireless) plugged into the wrong power source :o No wonder they wouldn't work, and I'm lucky I didn't fry the thing. Once I got the power straightened out, they fired right up, and I *did* get sound from the RCA outputs on the AT&T box. So...

I get just the opposite - the 'flip' happens once I lock the system and let it sit; re-booting usually *fixes* the problem. Came in this morning and it had happened over the weekend at some point, in fact. Nathan

But the access time is much lower, which should help - I'm dealing with *tons* of tiny files, as opposed to a few larger ones. For conditions like this, random read / write performance is more important than linear read / write, correct? Nathan
