Any IT Security professionals out there?

IME...college/education is not a significant factor in hiring for Security. Experience, and good judgement (that thing you get from bad experiences) are more significant. I'm a security pro. Been doing it for ~9 years, one of a staff of about 18, doing Info Sys Security for a large publicly...

    Information Security procedure * UPDATED

At my work (corporate)...suspension and probably dismissal. At the hospital where I used to work? Probably nothing, and pray they didn't get sued. IMHO, immediate suspension, followed by termination after review of the events. Then the union would fight it, and she'd probably get her job...

    Server-to-Client Email Encryption

It sort of depends... What underlying protocol are you using for the client to mail-server? POP3? SMTP? HTTP? IMAP? SMTP supports transport over TLS (equivalent of SSL)...but it's generally configured for server to server communications.

So what do you guys use...

WebSense here for internet usage. Digital Guardian for "information leakage control" Macafee for blocking certain programs (pretty much any p2p, including skype.exe)

What Computer Security Certs for a career?

For starters, the SANS courses/certs aren't bad. CISSP is worth more though.

How secure would you consider this?

Change the router password, so it's not the default, and so it's long/strong. Make sure the router doesn't respond to pings from the WAN interface. Most routers come out of the box w/ no inbound ports. That's what you want, generally. Wireless settings: Depending on your environment...

Does anyone want to talk about general security topics?

I agree that manual pen-testing is a waste of $$. It's a nice income stream for the "consulting" companies. IMHO, automated pen testing (aka: input fuzzing, etc) is a useful tool to run against applications before they're put into production use. Shopping carts, etc... Good tool to make sure...

AV-Test.org Reports Stats from Antivirus Roundup

So...was this a "fair" evaluation? According to one commentator, the test set is mostly "malware", while the client software are mostly "virus" detectors. The other piece of it is: Why was WebWasher included in the testing? (It's not client software at all)

WOOT! Finally a place for us to discuss security issues..

Well, this is interesting. I drop off for a while, and look what pops up. Can we post job opportunities?

What are you doing for your Win2000 machines?

Thanks Stash. We actually needed the Exchange patch anyway. Only 2 (Exch) servers left, but they won't be upgraded in time. :( In any case, w/ 33,000 employees, it would be hard to argue "money is a problem". LOL

What are you doing for your Win2000 machines?

Hmmm. There's a manual way? We just paid ~$40,000 to get the "official" patches for W2K from M$.

Connecting to office by VPN without losing normal Internet connectivity?

What Cooky said. Unlikely to be able (or be permitted) to change that on the company device. Why would the company permit you full-access VPN w/ your personal machine? That's just as risky as split tunneling (IMPO).

Unable to record/save security (or any) event log files....

To clarify: this feature/function (export event log to file) works fine when you're using TSclient to connect to the file server, and running eventviewer there. this feature/function does NOT work when you're using TSClient to connect to a Citrix server (in a different OU), and running...

Check to see if you have any USB drive-type devices connected. The number 1 cause for this error is having another "bootable" device left connected.

    SCSI hot-swap adapters

Technically, it's not hot-swap unless both the drive and the controller support that. The connectors you're talking about are SCA (80 pin) designed for drive enclosures with a back-plane for the drives to plug in to. The 68-pin is the default Wide SCSI connector.

UhOh - I pissed off IT security

Since I'm the IT guy who would have to review this... (ok, not at his employer) What Spidey said is right: I'm not here to prevent you doing your job, I'm here to protect the enterprise from bad things. My role is to guide you into ways of doing things that are safer. We have lots of modems...

    Wireless username/password being cached?

No it's not an obvious issue. You have to logon as a domain account...which requires knowledge of an ID and password. If you change the domain password, then disconnect, then log on again and try to connect, it should prompt you at that point, since the connection should have failed. What...

    Firewall Switch for Home Network

How much is "enough"? Depends on personal taste. I'm comfortable with that level, w/o software firewalls, w/ current A/V, w/ MS AutoUpdate. 75% of my users are non-admins, I use a windows (AD) domain for all IDs, and no-one surfs pron/warez. No Outlook! YMMV.

    Firewall Switch for Home Network

I don't think so. Would depend on the model. If they're designed to stack, that would imply that heat won't be an issue. The other option would be to mount them to the wall. Mine came w/ screw mounts, so it could be attached to the wall flat. (consumer, 4 port) This is the one I...

    Firewall Switch for Home Network

If you want 108 wireless, you're going to have to match up the router and the cards. Kind of a pain, since laptops mostly come w/ embedded now. Embedded cards seem to have much better antennas than PCCard. Commercial (Industry standard) networking equipment comes 19" wide to mount in rack...

    Firewall Switch for Home Network

My thoughts... Have him wire everything to a patch panel in whatever room/closet you pick. Also wire in phone/cable to the same room (commonly referred to as a "demarc"). You'll need power there as well. Now, you can add in whatever cable-modem, switches, firewalls, etc...you want, and just...

Network drives - Windows XP Pro, user names and passwords

New CLI shell available from MS in RC1 form: PowerShell (I don't have the URL handy, so search MS downloads for it.) It's their answer to bash, bourned, etc... shells. Built on .NET, so has "object" access, not just syntax. I've had it for 3 days, so I'm just starting to figure out how to use it.

    Encryption/Mac OS X

EFS protected files are recoverable (with the keys) using any W2K or XP booted OS. Boot into Windows from the internal/primary drive, connect the drive as an additional drive. Import your keys (either a backup of the original keys or the backup of the recovery key). And Windows does the...

using IPSEC to restrict wired access to our network

Spidey So far, I'm only in to the Cisco devices (Avaya next)...because the CIO had is (Cisco) VOIP conversation recorded and played back to him. :) It's pretty ugly, uses SCEP protocol (proprietary Cisco certificate proxy thingy) to request certs on behalf of the handsets, and submit those...

using IPSEC to restrict wired access to our network

i'm w/ spidey. Internal encryption is going to be a PITA, and it will NOT scale well. Unless you use something designed for it, like 802.1x. I'm in the process of trying to encrypt all our VOIP traffic...and that's going to be a PITA, and for only 3,500 handsets.

    Stranded vs Solid cable

I know our "standard" patch panels at work have most terminations/blocks as RJ45, but they also put in the RJ-11s for the analog phone lines. (Yes, we still have a few...mostly used for war-dialing. :D) I've seen one at Home Depot, includes data, phone and video distribution panel. Tie that...
