The Mid-Range AMD system they recommend should be good for your friend, you'll just have to adjust it slightly if you want to include Windows XP Pro and $$ for your time and still be at $1500.

I'm thinking of doing something similar, I have 2 sticks of 256MB Mushkin PC2700 in my Shuttle MN31N with an Athlon XP 2500, and want to add a 512MB stick in my third slot.
I'm wondering if running three sticks totalling 1GB in single channel mode will hurt performance significantly compared...

I'm using 2003 because I'm taking a college course where we are using 2003 to do network administration. The computer at school that I was able to install 2003 on is a Pentium II 266 with 128mb RAM. I'd rather use my computer at home when I can.
I have a Shuttle MN31N motherboard and I'm using Windows Server 2003. I've tried installing the latest Nforce drivers from Nvidia as well as the drivers that came with the motherboard. I have no audio and when I open the audio control panel, I get error messages that don't really tell me much...
I went into Safe Mode with the Radeon, and installed the drivers from the CD that came with it, and now everything works fine. I guess the problem was the drivers that come with Windows XP.

When the XP install first started, it showed the list of partitions, but since this was a new drive, it just showed:
Unpartitioned space: 32 GB
I didn't create any partitions myself, I just chose the unpartitioned space and then chose NTFS, and Windows did it's thing.
The drive is a brand new OEM. When the XP installation started, it showed the drive as 32GB and asked me if I wanted to format NTFS or FAT32. I chose NTFS and installed Windows. I checked the drive capacity in Windows after installation and it shows 32GB.
