That is "not" true. Dual-Raptors will give you NO real world performance gain at all - and in some cases, less. (already tested by Anandtech) It also doubles your chance for drive failure. Get 2 drives and RAID1 the bastages.

question about running dual NICs

What OS are you running? Windows 2000 & XP Pro only allow 10 connections, XP Home allows 5. I don't know that this would count, because you're using an APP and not standard printer/file sharing. Use perfmon to measure your RAM, Paging/sec, Network send/bytes/sec... see where your bottleneck is.

Having to setup a quick server

I have a client that was running Quickbooks 2003 on TS (not many simultaneous however) without issue -- and they've just recently moved to Quickbooks Enterprise 5.0 ($3500!).

Is nvidia firewall sufficient?

I recommend Trend Micro's AV solutions or AVG. I'm not a fan of software firewalls on workstations (I deal with domains a lot).

Lots of RAM... about 256MB for the server and 96-128MB for each concurrent user (I know that's not the offical specs, but it works out nicely).

Anywhere in the world? Windows 2000 - Terminal Server enabled. (I'd go with 2003 if you can get it for the same price). Enforce strict password policies (length, complexity, time, remember passwords, & lockout policy) Then be sure to password protect your Quickbooks stuff.

wxp networking issues

Uhh.. workgroup is nothing but a name for machines to associate themselves with by default. there's nothing to config. Unless you mean the 'other' workgroup is on a different subnet. And I've never seen Windows be wrong about duplicate name on network errors.

So let me get this straight... You're getting an IP from the router. You can get to the internet Assuming you have 2 other machines on the network, can THEY ping each other? Print out an 'ipconfig /all' from both machines and paste it here.

Sorry, Global Catalog. And I believe I mispoke... I think it's caching (Universal Group). Nope, looks like you need a DC on the remote end. Then the 2 DC's can sync the AD information. You can use Universal Group caching to help alleviate the traffic across the VPN...

How to setup an intranet

Best to use a local DNS server if you can get away with it (any Server 2000 or Server 2003 will do). Modifying hosts files can be a huge pain.

Other than working with old technology, Server 2003 rocks. Group Policy, DNS, -- it's all very straightforward and powerful. Nothing wrong with MS stuff. And it's a heck of a lot easier for most people (that are comfortable with Windows).

It's still in mixed-mode (per 2000) or whatever the equivalent functional level (in 2003) -- but that's only for Servers, not clients. I just talked to my boss - turns out it was combination of things: Disabled SMB signing (as I thought) And WINS Scope was defined in DHCP. Took that out...

Help with IIS!

Your virtual directory - have you set the file security permissions correctly (guest read-allow)? Have you setup a local user (assuming a 2000/xp Pro client)? you could do this to specifically allow a username/password to have more rights (see above).

Does either have a static IP (public)? If so, that should be the gateway. (unless you're using DynDNS or something) - then it doesn't really matter.

You COULD just setup a DNS server. That would help alot. If you don't want to do the login thing, that would be a good solution. I've HEARD that some 2000 & 2003 domains slow down SMB traffic due to signing, but that can be disabled. (or there's another fix, I don't recall exactly)...

Firewall is disabled on both 2003 servers. Only one NT had IPX/SPX. Had no effect when I disabled it. All 9x & NT have NetBEUI on them. The Server 2003 doesn't - installing it requires a workaround I'm not sure I want to go through with due to some special packet filtering we're running...

62*C/125*F normal for Athlon XP 1800+?

My 2000+ o/c to 2200+ (1667 -> 1800) runs 41°C idle and 47°C at full load. It locks up around 56°C (testing, etc..) Using AS3, 60-80mm funnel, 80mm 50+CFM fan & copper heatsink. EPoX 8K7A (AMD761 board)

I agree Bingo. I've been readin' and readin' and the AMD761 always tore up the ALi boards. Every review site I've seen (that has reviewed it) is crowning the EPoX 8K7A the king of the OC boards. I haven't seen a site yet that flaunts the ALI over the AMD chipset. But I'd certainly be willing...

ddeder, have you tried o/c it? I read in another thread that the 1.2's come unlocked... uhh.. wow? Wouldn't that mean you could just change the multiplier to like 10 or 11 and still run at 133x2? (10=1333, 11=1466) - I bought a retail one (only +$10 after shipping gets me a 3 year warranty!)...
