Router Or Gateway

WCG200 from Linksys would be the all in 1 unit solution. Never used it, but I have had few problems with their stuff. I'm sure other companies make simliar products.

Question Concerning Linksys Vonage Hardware

Just hook that vonage router into any available network port on your Linksys. It will work fine. Mine does.

VONAGE!

Has worked flawlessly for me for over a year. I really have no complaints at all. The only time I see problems is when I'm doing a massive File transfer from work to home or the other way around and I get a phone call at the same time. Call seems as if there is a short delay until the FT is done.

Finding a Program's Local Port

since I dont' know exactly what you are looking for, I suggest you go to a freeware/sharware search site like tucows and just search for network port monitoring and find one that features the type of info you like. There are literally hundreds of them.

By law, how long are network admins. supposed to keep logs?

I work for a national retalier and we do 7 years. I know of no law, I always assumed that the 7 years was having to do with credit card transactions how long debts are allowed to appear on credit reports... 7 years. I could be wrong though.

Evil Comcast

While I don't recommend "borrowing" anybody's internet service without their permission even if they are stupid enough to leave it out there for all to grab, I would suggest Linksys cable modems over Motorolla. I have had my Linksys for at least 4 years now at home and it still just keeps on...

Finding a Program's Local Port

You just need to run a network monitor program to monitor your ports while you use the program you have in question. There are several out there that are freeware or shareware. you can also try just dropping to a command prompt in windows and typing netstat -b

Assuming you have ethernet network cards in both machines, just run a cross over ethernet cable between the two and share a folder on each machine. Should work very easily.

LPT only printer to desktop 50' away

Fardringle, I like your idea on the wireless print server but I do not know of one that is made with an LPT port. All the ones I have seen are USB only. I'm not sure if using a LPT to USB converter in that scenario would work. Do you know of such a product with an LPT port...

how to get msn messenger file transfers to work with router?

Bluntly, you don't with a NAT firewall..... Microsoft admits that MSN file transfers behind NAT devices have 'issues'. I still don't know what the specifics are, but basically transfers just don't work outbound when behind a NAT device, like the Linksys BEFSR41 and most hardware firewall...

NEWBIE QUESTION Wireless 4 station internet

Like Jack said... 300 feet for wireless through walls is tough for one WAP. Now if you have more than one WAP, it could work but with each additional WAP it always costs more $$$.

You have to forward the appropriate ports for your voice chat services to your internal IP. There should be some port forwarding options in your router settings. I would think the voice chat services would also list what ports they use.

Can't read router config page (BEFSR41)

Well, there is a reset switch on the back (hold in with the tip of a pen for a few seconds) That will take you back to all the factory default settings for the router. Then try pinging the router at 192.168.1.1. Again like the others said, make sure there are no other devices on the network...

Linksys or 3Com Switch???

Linksys is good stuff. I always have stuck with them. Rarely have problems with their products and their customer service when I do have problems has always been outstanding. 3com is just as good as far as quality or their products but I think Linksys wins my vote because of their great CS.

Problem: How do I get my router to work with my DSL modem??

MAC address clone: go to the router's default IP address in a web browser, with Linksys it's 192.168.1.1. Login, default for linksys is no username and password is "admin" Click on advanced, then on Mac Clone Address. Enter the appropriate mac address, save settings.

Linksys Wireless router any good?

I used a Linksys BEFW11S4 to set up a small wireless network for a church/school. Like Jack said, as long as you don't need ultra specific control over the firewall you'll be fine with it.

Linksys Router requires frequent restarting (power cycling)

I have one of these in a network I manage. I have never had a lick of trouble with it. Linksys has always been VERY VERY good to me about replacing defective stuff. The only thing I can think of is that in your router's DHCP settings you have set a very short lease time and it's only handing...

So what does a Network Engineer do anyway?

It has something to do with the word Engineer and some law they have if you are called an Engineer you have to have some certain degree from a University and I guess they don't think passing MS's 8 or 12 or whatever number of tests is good enough.

ICQ Ports

That's close Jack thank you, but not quite what I was looking for. That shows you how to set up ports throgh a socks proxy for multiple users with ICQ. Since we are using a NAT firewall here I need to know the port for the file transfer feature so I can forward it and allow it to work...

Okay, had to reflash the firmware on my router and stupid me didn't write some stuff down. Does anyone know what port ICQ uses for FILE TRANSFERS. I know it uses 5190 for logging on but for the life of me I can't remember or find out what port it's FT feature uses.

Restaurant paid for the meal, do we still tip?

You gotta tip if in the server is not to blame for the error and especially if they comp the meal. On another note, if you use a discount card like a passport card where you buy one meal and get the other free, always tip 15% of what the bill would have been not what your final price was.

Widescreen is the way to go. I've been shopping for a few weeks now for one in the same price range. Saw a Sony 51" for $2100 at Sears that was pretty dang nice.

what's w/ these no media COA licenses of WinXP? are they legit?

I do know that you can buy these COA's in a legit manner. It's designed to allow large companies install the OS over the network as opposed to passing the CD around. Ex... they already have one copy, put it on the server and everybody in the new dept installs it on their new machine. This way...
