Dell Vostro. With 19 inch lcd. One gig ram. Intel dual core. Windows XP for 399.00.

Dell Vostro. With 19 inch lcd. One gig ram. Intel dual core. Windows XP for 399.00.

I went ahead and ordered the mini-tower last night. I upgraded to the 20" monitor and E6550 for a total of $140 more so my final price is $560 including shipping and tax. I'll take it. Add a mid-level video card and you've got a pretty decent box for less than $700.

Dell Vostro. With 19 inch lcd. One gig ram. Intel dual core. Windows XP for 399.00.

This is a solid system for the price. $419 for a C2D, with 1GB of Ram...add another GB of RAM and a decent video card, and you've got a pretty nice gaming system (especially if you upgrade the processor sometime in the near future)

    128 GB Solid State Drive

actually, you're both right. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID and the reason you'd want to RAID 5 these devices is for fault tolerance and not reliability. Yes, they're spec-ed to go to 140 years @ 50gb per day, but is that a single 50gb file or 50gb worth of small sql writes...because...

    WHS Hardware questions. NAS/Server

Use old hardware. I had a Gateway 6400 server that I bought through a deal here many moons ago that I just finished installing WHS on. It's a P3 with 512MB ram and 3 750GB PATA drives in it. It more than does the job. If you do choose to purchase new hardware, go cheap. Get a cheap...

    Repeated RAID5 Failures

3ware and adaptec are GREAT brands of controllers. I have a 4 port PATA 3ware controller that only cost me a shade over $120 that's been running a RAID 5 array 24x7 for the past 16 months. Depending on how often you're going to be on the server, you might even want to consider a RAID 6...

DAMN IT! our site keeps getting attacked by DOS help!

Don't mess with his computer (and if you are, don't post on a public forum before doing it) Log every attack and your time spent fixing it. Log his IP and report it to his ISP as well as his local police department. Then sue him for damages to recover lost time, lost site growth (and...

Weird occurances dealing with electricity within my house

I need a standard ATX Power Supply for a PIII era motherboard.

I have an older Gateway Server that I'm going to be using to build a Windows Home Server machine and am concerned that the power supply will not be sufficient. It's an Asus board, with dual PIII 1GHz chips and 512MB ram.... I will have an optical drive in it, but it will mostly be unused...

Hot! Best Buy 750G Seagate 55.99 No AR Clearance!

One store in my area had them at the 282.99 price and would not match the 83.99 at 2 other local stores only about 20 miles away....so you might have some problems getting them to match a receipt scan. That being said, the store manager did offer to call the other two stores and have them put...

They will kick all possible ass, but they are louder, hotter and much, much more expensive than a couple raptors. It's a question of whether you want to spend the money or not.

building an 8-monitor setup for my dad

it depends largly on the format, compression, size and quality of the video you're looking to play. If you're looking to stream 8 multi-gig 1920x1080 video streams, you might not even be able to do 2 streams per computer. If they're 8 10mb 320x240 files, then you could probably stream them...

    setting up raid-5 questions

If your disks are different sizes, your RAID controller will only use an amount equal to the smallest disk from each drive. In your case: 300+300+400+500=1.5TB, but because the smallest disk is 300gb, you will only get 900gb of storage in a RAID 5. As far as adding a disk to the array, it...

    Another Simple Math problem....

Thanks, but I screwed that one up...... C is not in the denominator. It should have been: D=[(A^2)/((A^2)+(B^2))]*C

    Another Simple Math problem....

Basically I have an equation where values A, B, and C are always known and it calculates D. Now I'm looking to do some hypotheticals and in doing that, I'd like to calculate for A, B, or C, if the other three are known. Here's the D equation.... D=(A^2)/((A^2)+(B^2))*C Can anyone...

    Simple Math Problem

yup. This is how I would do it: A=(B*16)/9 B=(A*9)/16 C=sqrt(a^2+b^2) That means that: C=sqrt(A^2+((A*9)/16)^2) and C=sqrt(((B*16)/9)^2+B^2)

    Computational Node Build: Please Critique

    Computational Node Build: Please Critique

Perhaps you should consider Intel boards... You might want to consider something like Intel BLKDP35DPM LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $106.99 and a larger ATX case.... With this you'll get better airflow in a full ATX case as well as a built-in Intel NIC. I also...

    SAS For One

If you're asking which will work better between SAS and SATA, I would imagine that all other things being equal, SAS would beat SATA...and also cost more. If you're asking if a single SAS drive will perform better on a SAS controller vs. a SAS hardware RAID controller, then I would guess that...

    Need Massive Storage Solution

I would go with something like this: http://www.infrant.com/product...name=ReadyNAS%20NVPlus or similar. Throw 4 500GB drives in there in a RAID 5, then add a single external 1TB drive as a backup to that.

    Best upgrade choices?

most games don't take much advantage of having over 2gb RAM (even if you manually change your page file size) and will simply not see any RAM over 4GB total. It's probably a waste to add another 4, when you'll really only get usefulness out of 2. I'd recommend the processor and the video...

Rate my Quad Core System (newb)

My point wasn't "don't buy an obsolete card"...nearly all computer technology is obsolete by the time it arrives at your doorstep. It was "Don't spend too much on a card". DX 10 cards are very expensive and simply don't provide a good cost/performance payoff. Only making it worse is the...

RAID 0 vs No RAID (Reliability)

It's actually worse than a single drive because if you lose EITHER of the two drives or the RAID controller/configuration, all data is lost....but it is quicker.
  36. C

Rate my Quad Core System (newb)

don't spend too much on a video card right now. Vista SP1 (w/ DX 10.1) will make all current cards obsolete in the next 6 mos....and games don't even make full use of DX 10 yet...so you don't get much from buying a DX 10 card right now.

Fastest hard drive combination - RAID 0, 5?

Will the RAID controller support multiple arrays? If so, go with 2 150GB Raptors in a RAID 0 for your OS and Apps and 3 or 4 250GB drives in a RAID 5 for your storage. (250Gb seems to be the best cost/GB right now...with drives costing as little as $50 for full retail)

    Server Build

I know the build is part of the thrill you're going for, but I think you're going to be much better off looking at server hardware than workstation hardware here... It'll give you a much more accurate real-world test of your applications. like Horsepower mentioned, you should probably look...
