slow hard drive format

yes that is too long. your harddrive probably has bad sectors and win2k is marking those sectors as bad--thats why it is taking so long. you may have to perform a wipe on the drive (write zeros to harddrive). you can download the IBM utility at their website...

a CHKDSK question...

kinda sounds like you have a video problem but the system also freezes before the GUI boots up. i bet your filesystem is corrupted or you have a lot of bad sectors towards the end of the drive. i would use the Windows chkdsk and do a full scan--if it seems like it cannot complete the chkdsk...

Did you have any other operating systems installed before this? do you have more than one harddrive? i would take out any other cards like network or audio in the system.

No, or i am not aware of such a utility in win2k. there are some 3rd party programs, but i would not trust them at all. stay away from norton products that do that....

2000 Pro and VIA chipsets, install stops after formatting HD

i think i could be a bad CPU or piece of RAM. i have seen this problem before and each time it is different. have you tried another piece of RAM? if not, try that first, then move on to the CPU or motherboard. try another CPU before the motherboard.

i think what you need is a fabric switch. a Fibre Channel switch will give you the ability to hook up all your harddrives to one device. the Switch has ports that your computers plug into which give you the ability to share your harddrives.

yup i have seen this problem before. i am glad that this is not a random error that i alone only have seen. i tried to fix this problem. and i did fix the Installer service that runs on bootup. i had to track it down in the registry to fix it. but, it did not help. i still could not...

An I/O Error occured while installing a file. This is normally caused by bad media

i doubt it is your Harddrive that is the problem. Your CDROM drive is probably giving you those errors. the CRC on the CDROM drive is probably bad. try another CDROM drive before replacing your harddrive and wasting your time writing zeros or doing a scandisk.

REPAIR WINDOWS XP EXPLORER.EXE

go to RUN and type: sfc /scannow if that does not work then put your XP in the CDROM drive and boot from it. choose the option that says repair. if you do not have a repair disk then have XP LOCATE your XP installation. do a manual repair and hopefully you will be fine.

increasing the size of the registry will not make a difference in this case. your registry hive is too big to fit into memory upon bootup or corrupted from a failed driver/software installation--that is if this is the problem. maybe your motherboard's FSB is sending bad signals and corrupting...

file corruption?

the checksum on the file does not match up with the metafiletable if you are using NTFS. XP did not complete updating a file when it crashed. another process prevented the kernel to write to the filesystem.

XP Says HD Not Formatted, In DOS I See All Files?

you are probably going to have to edit the drive and make sure your harddrive has the correct filesystem ID. you can use DiskProbe that is on the WIN2K/XP disc under support tools. if you cannot do that then i suggest you move those files off that harddrive to another harddrive that is Fat32...
